Doing Cayo Perico Solo

The Cayo Perico heist is the only major GTA Online setup that can be cleared completely alone. You handle planning, all four setups, and the finale by yourself. No pawns, no crew cuts, no one to bail on you mid-heist. That said, it is not simple. The first few runs will feel messy. After enough attempts it becomes routine. You need Rank 10 and to own or lease an Apartment with a Nightclub, Arcade, or Terrorbyte. Specifically, you need a Maze Bank West or Eclipse Heights apartment for the initial contact mission. Contact (Fruit Fly) through your phone to get the board. Spend $25,000 to set it up. Heists Board location is key — if you do not have one, buy the cheapest apartment with a Heists Board available. The cost to begin: roughly $25k for the initial scouting mission, nothing else mandatory until you actually start the prep missions. You will spend more on ammo, armored vests, and possibly a Minipult if you want to brute-force things.

The Planning Phase

Once you unlock the board, you enter the planning room. The primary target rotates between three options: Painting, Data Drive, or Bonds. The secondary targets are gems, marijuana, gold, cash, and weed. For solo runs, the priority is always the primary target, because you only need one primary to meet the payout threshold. Do not waste time collecting secondary loot unless it is adjacent to your primary target route. Choose your difficulty. Normal is fine for learning. Hard does not change the heist structure, only the payout. I ran Normal for about six months straight. Nobody cares.

Entering the Island

You have multiple approaches. The three main ones are: I recommend the submarine for your first five runs. It is predictable. You know exactly where you are coming out. Once you have the island layout memorized, switch to swimming for speed. The sub takes about 90 seconds of travel time. Swimming from the northwest beach takes roughly 40 seconds but you will likely draw fire. This is where most solo players fail. Let me break down the three primary targets:

Painting — Located in the Main Compound, inside the vault. This is the most common primary. The route is straightforward: enter through the front gate, take the stairs to the vault room. Two guards patrol the vault area. You can take them out with a silenced pistol or just wait for them to walk away. The painting is large and heavy. Carrying it makes you slower. You have a timer once you pick it up. Approximately 3 minutes to escape with it. Data Drive — Located in the Engineer's house near the dock. This is a smaller target and the quickest to grab. The Engineer's house is a single-story building at the far eastern end of the compound. One guard patrols the exterior. Inside, the drive sits on a desk. Grab it and leave. Total time with this target is usually under 90 seconds from entry to exit. I used this route almost exclusively during my first month because I kept getting caught with the Painting due to poor escape route knowledge. Bonds — Inside the Safe Room of the Main Compound. Same building as the Painting but a different route. You go through the kitchen area, down into the safe room. Two guards. The bonds are lightweight. This is the safest primary for beginners because you are already in the main compound and the escape routes from that area are well-traveled.

Weapon Loadout

Bring a suppressed SMG or pistol as your primary weapon. The Heavy Sniper with thermal scope is useful for taking out helicopters before they lock onto you, but most solo players never need it. A minigun or rocket launcher is overkill for solo and will just make noise, attracting every guard on the island. Armored vest is mandatory. Not optional. I learned this after my third run when a single guard shot caught me in the back while I was carrying the Painting. DIED. Instantly. Armored vest costs $10,000 at Ammu-Nation. Get it.

My Actual Run Template

Here is what my standard solo run looks like after about 40 attempts: Start submarine from Eclipse Tours dock. Swim to the underwater tunnel entrance. Enter the island. Head to the Painter's villa. Take out the two guards near the vault. Grab the Painting. Exit through the same route or cut through the garden toward the northwest beach. Swim to your sub. Extract. Total elapsed time from spawn to extraction: approximately 8 minutes. Payout around $850,000 to $1,100,000 depending on difficulty and whether you grab any secondary loot along the way. If the Data Drive is the primary, the whole thing takes about 5 minutes. I once did a run in 3 minutes 47 seconds from start to finish. That was on Hard difficulty with no secondary loot. Just the drive and a clean getaway.

The Escape

The escape is the part people underestimate. Once you grab the primary target, a countdown starts. You need to get to your extraction point within that time. Your options for escape are: Swim back to your submarine. This is the most reliable method. Do not try to outrun guards on foot. They have more health than you and you are carrying a massive target model that slows your sprint speed significantly. Use a boat. Park a bike or speeder near the beach and use it to speed away from the island. This works but you need to know where the guard patrols will intercept you. A Mule or Contender works. I usually just stick to swimming and never had issues with it.

Helicopter extraction. If you have a Maverick or Hornet waiting overhead, you can helicopter out. This is fast but you need to be close to an open area. Not recommended for beginners because landing zones are limited and enemy helicopters will show up.

Common Mistakes

Running without a plan. Many people jump into Cayo Perico solo without knowing the island layout and die within 30 seconds. Watch a map video first. Just one. It will save you hours. Ignoring guard patrol patterns. Guards do not roam randomly. They follow set paths. Learn them. Stand still behind cover and wait for them to walk past. There is zero rush. Overcomplicating the loadout. You do not need five weapons. One suppressed gun and armor is sufficient for a solo run. Every extra weapon slot is a wasted inventory space.

Trying to collect secondary loot on your first few runs. Focus on the primary, learn the escape, then circle back for gems or cash on subsequent runs. Secondary loot adds maybe $50k to $150k per run. Not worth the risk of getting caught on your early attempts.

A Problem I Encountered

There was one specific edge case that nearly cost me a full week. During a solo run with the Painting as primary, I grabbed the target and headed for the northwest beach exit. Halfway across the beach, a Hunter helicopter spawned out of nowhere. I had no anti-air weapons. The sub was 200 meters away across open sand with zero cover. I died immediately. Three more attempts, same thing. Every time I reached the beach, a Hunter appeared and destroyed me before I could reach the water. The workaround was simple but I should have known it from the start. Instead of heading to the northwest beach, I took the longer route back through the Main Compound, down the service tunnel that connects to the underground passage near the engineer's house, and exited through the eastern beach instead. That route has no helicopter spawn points because the terrain blocks line of sight. I added about 45 seconds to my escape but completely eliminated the Hunter variable. Never ran into that problem again after switching routes.

When Solo Does Not Work

Solo is not ideal for everyone. If you frequently play with friends who want to participate, doing it solo means they get nothing. The payout is also lower than a four-person crew because you keep the entire take but the base payout scales down slightly when playing alone. You also cannot call in a second player mid-run for help, which matters if you encounter unexpected hostiles. Some people prefer the social aspect or the buffer that pawns provide. If you are someone who gets frustrated by repeating the same three minutes of gameplay forty times, solo Cayo Perico might burn you out. In that case, running it with two or three friends and splitting the loot is a reasonable alternative. You will make less per person but the variance is lower and you get social interaction out of it.

Bottom Line

Cayo Perico solo is repeatable, profitable, and entirely viable if you treat it like a job. Learn the routes. Pick a primary target and stick with it until you can clear it blindfolded. Do not chase secondary loot until your escape time is consistently under six minutes. The grinding is real but the payout justifies it for most players. Roughly $800k to $1M per run with practice. Thirty-minute sessions including setup time. That is competitive with any other money-making method in the game as of the current patch cycle.
