Using Cheats in GTA 5 on Console and PC
GTA 5 cheats are button combinations you can enter during gameplay to temporarily give yourself weapons, spawn vehicles, change weather, or trigger other effects. They work on all platforms — PlayStation, Xbox, and PC — but the input method differs. On consoles you press buttons on your controller. On PC you either use the in-game phone or type them into a trainer. I spent about three years running through every cheat in this game across multiple playthroughs before I stopped bothering with most of them. The ones that actually matter are the ones that save you time or just make a frustrating section easier. Here is what I found useful. Weapon Set (All Weapons)

How to Enter Cheats Correctly
Most people mess this up because they press too slowly or pause between inputs. The timing window is generous enough that you don't need to be a speedrunner, but there is a point where spacing things out by more than two seconds will break the sequence. Enter them at a normal, steady pace. If nothing happens after you finish the sequence, try again from the start. On PC, the phone method works during missions too, which is useful since some console cheats require you to be outside or paused. The one quirk with the phone is that you need to open the phone first and then dial each number. If you try to do it while the phone menu is already open from another action, it sometimes fails silently. Close the phone completely and reopen it before trying again. I hit this issue during a heist setup when I accidentally left the phone open from checking a map earlier. Dialed the cheat for heat death and nothing happened. Closed the phone, reopened it, tried again, worked fine. Seems minor but it wasted about thirty seconds in a moment where thirty seconds actually mattered.
What Cheats Don't Work Well
Some cheats have practical limitations that aren't obvious at first. Spawn vehicle cheats place the vehicle at your current location, which means if you're in a narrow alley or on top of a building, the vehicle might clip into terrain and get stuck or despawn after a few seconds. I learned this the hard way with the tank cheat. Spawned it directly on top of a rooftop near Mount Chiliad. It half-appeared, hovered for about four seconds, then vanished. Had to move to flat ground before activating it. Invincibility lasts five minutes real-time and does not persist across mission transitions. If you activate it before a mission starts, it expires mid-mission. Same goes for weapon sets — they clear when you enter a new story mission. These are hard limits built into the game and there is no workaround other than re-entering the cheat. Wanted level cheats also have edge cases. The lower wanted level cheat only removes stars you currently have. If you're at maximum level (six stars) and enter it once, it drops you to five, not zero. Enter it again and it goes to four. You need to enter it multiple times to fully clear a high wanted level. I know this from experience during a particularly chaotic section near the airport.
Alternatives to Built-In Cheats
If you're on PC and find button combinations too tedious, there are trainer programs like Scarab Trainer or Menyoo that let you toggle cheats with a single keypress. They're more flexible but come with trade-offs. You can't use achievements or online mode while they're active. For single-player only runs they work well enough. The downside is that some antivirus software flags them anyway, even when they're clean, which is annoying for people who don't want to configure exclusions. On console, you're stuck with the button combinations unless you use a save editor, which is a much bigger commitment and carries its own risks. I don't recommend it for casual play.

Practical Use Cases
The cheats that get the most mileage are the ones that handle repetitive tasks. Spawn vehicle cheats for fast travel vehicles save you from driving everywhere. The quad bike cheat is particularly useful because you can just spawn it near any waypoint and ride there. Weapon set is useful if you're about to start a mission that requires a specific loadout and you haven't purchased anything yet. Weather cheats don't actually change weather in the way most people expect. The weather cheat cycles through options but there's no guarantee of hitting a specific one. If you need clear skies for a particular mission, use the phone to navigate to the weather option rather than relying on chance. This is one of those things the game doesn't make clear at all. Money cheats don't exist in the traditional sense. GTA 5 doesn't have a direct cash cheat. People sometimes confuse mission skip cheats with money cheats. Skipping a mission gives you the payout automatically, but it also disables achievements for that mission. Whether that matters depends on how much you care about trophies.
I've been running these cheats since the game came out on PS3 and the list has barely changed. The core ones still work identically across every platform update. If you're looking for something specific, start with the weapon set and the vehicle spawns — those two cover most situations without much effort.
