Playing Through the Late Game in Elden Ring
I spent about three weeks last month finally getting past the bosses I had been stuck on for a while. This was after several failed runs and a lot of reloading checkpoints. The game is rough but fair once you understand what each enemy is actually doing under the hood. There is a lot of outdated information floating around. Some guides still suggest builds or tactics that were patched out months ago. The current meta has shifted toward more aggressive spacing and posture-breaking builds rather than pure tanking. Here is what actually works in my experience. Most bosses in Elden Ring operate on a limited move set that repeats in patterns. The key is learning when to punish rather than just dodging everything. I found that watching a boss for two full cycles without attacking gives you enough data to start forming a strategy. This usually takes about three to five minutes per boss.
Posture system is the most important mechanic to understand. Every attack chips away at the boss stamina gauge. Once it breaks, you get a critical opening. This applies to bosses as well as regular enemies. I have seen too many players just spam rolls and never learn this system. It makes fights last much longer than they need to.
Common Pitfall I Ran Into
When fighting Radahn during one of my attempts, I kept rolling toward him because that is what the game seems to train you to do. But his grab attack has absurd range if you are inside his shield. I ended up dying six times in a row from the same mistake. The workaround was switching to a long-reach weapon and staying outside his grab distance while building up his posture from range. It took about twenty minutes to adjust my approach but it changed the whole fight. The intelligence build with the Carian Sorcery staff is viable but slow. Faith builds with heavy incantations hit harder and burn through boss health faster. Strength builds are the most forgiving because the damage numbers are high enough that you can trade hits and still win. Dexterity builds require the most precision and I would not recommend them for first-time runs through the late game. I used a bleed build with the Rivers of Blood katana for most encounters. The proc triggers reliably and does significant percentage-based damage. It is not the most efficient method but it made several fights much easier for me personally. The weapon requires 18 Dexterity and 20 Intelligence, which means you have to invest in both stats somewhat.
Equipment and Talismans
The Margit's Shackle talisman is useful for multiple bosses. It temporarily reduces boss health when you summon help, even if you are playing solo. I did not realize this at first and it saved me a lot of time on later encounters. The Guardian's Sword Talisman increases defense when you are near a spirit ash summon, which pairs well with the shackle. Armor choice matters less than people think. Heavy armor slows your roll and that is a bigger liability than the extra defense is worth in most boss fights. I ran most encounters in medium armor that kept my roll fast. The difference in survivability was negligible but the speed made a noticeable impact.
Specific Boss Tactics
Malenia is the hardest boss in the game. Her waterfowl dance attack is nearly impossible to dodge reliably. The only consistent method I found was rolling through it once and then attacking from behind. Do not try to parry it. It does not work consistently and leaving you open is worse than taking some damage. I succeeded on my fourth attempt after adjusting to this approach. Godfrey first phase is straightforward. Learn his grab combo and dodge left or right, not backward. The forward dodge rolls through the attack entirely. Second phase introduces giant axes and faster combos. The pattern recognition from phase one still applies but you have less time to react. Patience here is more important than aggression. Rykel is another boss that benefits from posture breaking. His fire attacks are telegraphed clearly. Roll forward through them rather than backward. This gets you into attacking range while avoiding the damage. I have never died to his fire breath when I used this approach.
When a Guide Will Not Help
If you are struggling with a boss for more than an hour, it is usually a build issue, not a skill issue. Dropping into a lower level build and grinding for a few hours to power up sometimes makes the difference. I had to do this twice during my run and both times it resolved the problem completely. Spirit ashes can also make a huge difference. The Summon Jack spirit distracts bosses effectively and gives you space to attack. It is not a cheap tactic. It is how the game is designed to be played. The best approach is to treat each boss as a puzzle rather than a test of reflexes. Learn the moves. Find the opening. Take it. Repeat until the boss falls. There is no shortcut around that process but it is the only way the game wants you to engage with it.
