Getting the Most Out of Helldivers 2 on PS5

The PS5 version of Helldivers 2 runs two distinct display modes. One targets a higher resolution with a 30fps cap, and the other prioritizes frame rate at a lower dynamic resolution. Neither locks cleanly to 60fps at native 4K output, and you should know that going in. The frame pacing in Performance mode is generally smooth enough that the occasional dip doesn't feel as bad as the numbers suggest. The Resolution mode looks sharper in calm moments, but the slowdown during large stratagem-heavy fights is noticeable and sometimes disorienting. Running this way means picking Performance mode from the in-game settings, making sure your TV or monitor supports a 60Hz input, and disabling any image enhancement features on the display itself. I ran into a specific issue last month where my Samsung display kept overriding the console's frame rate counter and locking me to 30fps no matter what I changed on the PS5 side. The workaround was turning off VRR and Motion Smoothing in the TV settings, then re-enabling VRR only after the console had locked into Performance mode. It took about five minutes of toggling, and once I found the right combination, the game stayed locked out of the 30fps cap consistently. The PS5 outputs a dynamic resolution in Performance mode. It usually sits somewhere between 1440p and 1800p internally, then gets upscaled by the console's renderer before sending the signal to your screen. If your display accepts a 4K 60Hz signal, the upscaling happens on your end, which is fine for most people. Some users report that turning off HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color on the TV side actually stabilizes the signal better on certain cables, especially with longer runs that exceed 15 feet. Cheap cables don't handle the bandwidth at that resolution and refresh rate without throwing errors.

There is a subtlety most players miss. The motion blur in Helldivers 2 is not a single setting. It splits into two layers, and turning it off entirely can make fast camera movements feel choppy even when the frame counter says 60fps. Dialing it back to around 30% on the effect slider keeps the game feeling smooth without that smeared look during heavy explosions. Another thing nobody talks about is the shader compilation stutter. The first time you enter a mission on a new planet type, there will be brief hitches as the PS5 compiles shaders for that specific environment. I ran into this repeatedly during my first three Super Helldiver missions on the Glacier planet, with noticeable stutters lasting a second or two each. After about four or five missions on that same planet, the compilation finishes and the stutters go away permanently for that environment. If you want the sharpest possible image, you can switch to Resolution mode and pair it with an upscaling setting on your display, but the frame rate will drop to 30fps with occasional dips into the mid-20s during intense bug swarms. That tradeoff is real and unavoidable on the current build. There is no patch that locks 60fps at native 4K, and there is no performance mod available through any PS5 settings menu. The main pitfalls are assuming the PS5 version will match the PC settings, expecting a 60fps lock that never arrives, and leaving display upscaling features enabled on both the TV and the console simultaneously. When both layers are active, the image can look softer than it needs to and frame pacing gets unpredictable. Turn off AI-based upscaling on your display, pick one source for the upscaling job, and keep the console on Performance mode for the smoothest experience.
