Aperture Science is a fictional research facility featured in Valve’s Portal series. When people ask how big it is, the answer depends on which entry you’re looking at. The original Portal (2007) and Portal 2 (2011) show progressively more expansive versions of the same site, and neither is particularly clear about exact square footage.

The original Portal presents a relatively contained testing environment, mostly underground. Think a few floors of converted industrial space, maybe a few hundred thousand square feet at most. The chambers are connected by hallways, test rooms, and administrative areas. It’s not a sprawling campus, more like a dedicated research building that happens to be buried.
Portal 2 flips that script. The game opens with the facility in ruins after a catastrophic event, then you explore increasingly massive sections that extend far beyond what the first game showed. There are abandoned laboratories, greenhouse areas, old administrative blocks, and what looks like entire sealed wings that have been reclaimed by nature. The sense of scale here is enormous. You’re walking through what appears to be kilometers of corridors, multiple above-ground sections, and underground levels that go deeper than anything from the first game.
The developer never gave exact numbers. Ken Levine or anyone at Valve was coy about it, and the game files don’t help much either. What you get is an impression: the older Portal feels like a compact facility, while Portal 2 suggests something closer to a small city beneath the surface.
I remember digging through source code for a fan project back in 2014, trying to map out the facility layout for a custom map. I spent about three days tracing room connections across both games, and what I found was essentially a network of corridors, labs, and chambers that wouldn’t fit inside any single existing building. My workaround was to use the hammer editor’s distance tools to estimate real-world scale. The longest continuous walkable path I could find between two points in Portal 2 measured roughly 2.3 kilometers when calculated in-game. That’s a lot for an underground facility.
The truth is, Aperture Science was never meant to be literal. Valve designed it to feel vast, mysterious, and slightly absurd. The humor comes from treating a crumbling test facility like it’s a serious scientific institution, regardless of how many square feet it actually occupies. The real answer to size questions is: it’s bigger than you need it to be for the story, and smaller than it could be without breaking the game.
If you’re looking for precise measurements, they don’t exist. If you want a practical sense of scale, think of it as roughly 1-2 square kilometers of explored space across both games, with large unexplored sections remaining throughout. That’s not an official number. It’s an estimate based on gameplay distance, level design intent, and what makes the most sense for a facility that was supposed to do physics research for decades.
