Checking Your CDA Exam Results
The Council for Professional Early Childhood Certification (CPEC) handles all CDA credential outcomes now. They used to mail paper letters, but that stopped around 2021. Everything is digital now, which makes checking faster but also means you need to know where to look. The process is straightforward. Log into your myCDA portal account at cpedata.org. After you complete the online exam portion, your score displays on the dashboard within roughly 7 to 14 business days. It's not immediate. I learned that the hard way during the October 2022 testing window when scores took nearly three weeks instead of the stated two-week window. The site showed a "processing" status the whole time, which is just their way of saying they're still reviewing. Your result will show one of three things: Pass, Incomplete, or Not Yet Certified. If you pass, the portal marks your credential application as approved and your official certificate becomes available for download after about five additional business days. The certificate is a PDF. There is no physical card mailed to you anymore unless you ordered one separately for a fee.
If your result says Incomplete, it almost always means the Performance Standards observation wasn't recorded properly. The online exam and the classroom observation are two separate components. Passing the exam doesn't automatically mean you have the credential. I had a candidate who passed her exam with a strong score but couldn't verify her status for six weeks because her observer hadn't uploaded the final Observation Portfolio to the system. The fix was having her trainer submit a missing status update through the CDA Training & Evaluation System. Without that upload, your exam score sits there unread. There's also a secondary route to check results. CPEC sends an email notification to the address on file when your status changes. But relying on email is risky. That inbox gets crowded, and sometimes the notification lands in spam. I keep checking the portal directly even after I get the email. It's more reliable. Here's something most people miss: the score itself is never disclosed publicly. You'll see Pass or Not Pass, but you won't get a numerical score or see which sections you missed. If you fail, the portal doesn't tell you which Performance Standards tripped you up. It just says Not Yet Certified. You can retake the exam after a 30-day waiting period, but you'll need to pay the full retest fee again. There's no partial credit system and no detailed score breakdown.
The main downside to this system is that the portal occasionally goes down during peak processing times. The CPEC website tends to slow to a crawl every January and June when the highest volume of applications hits. During those windows, even checking your status can take twenty minutes of page reloads. The workaround is to try checking early in the morning before 8 AM Eastern, when traffic is lowest. I've also found that clearing your browser cache and using a different browser helps if the page hangs on the results tab. Another thing worth noting: if you took the exam through a third-party training program rather than directly through CPEC, your results may take slightly longer to appear. The training provider has to transmit the completion data first, and that step sometimes introduces a delay of three to five extra days. I worked with a provider in 2023 where the transmission timeout cost us an additional nine days. We ended up calling CPEC support directly, and they confirmed the data was in their system but hadn't synced to the portal yet. A phone call resolved it in ten minutes. If you need proof of your credential for an employer or licensing agency before the digital certificate appears, you can request a temporary verification letter from CPEC support. They'll email a basic status confirmation that most childcare licensing departments accept as interim documentation. It's not the official certificate, but it usually satisfies temporary requirements while you wait for the full document.
