Song Set Fire To The Rain Lyrics

Set Fire To The Rain Lyrics by Adele

You're probably here because you heard the song somewhere and caught that one line about setting fire to the rain, and now you want to know the rest. The track is from Adele's 2011 album 21, written by Adele, Paul Epworth, and Fraser T. Smith. It became a massive hit, won a Grammy, and is one of those songs that people still sing at weddings ten years later. I'm no hero, that's understood
All my roses were too bruised
I kept trying to make sense
And all I could hear was the rain

I reached out for you
But you ran and hid in the smoke
I thought that I was wrong somehow
But all I could hear was the rain

How many times do I have to lie?
Saying that I'm fine when I'm not
I gave you my heart but it came back
Damaged and broken, I know
You said you'd change but you didn't
'Cause nothing lasts forever
And even though I tried, I

Set fire to the rain
Threw your keys in the flame
Watched them go up in a swirl
Set fire to the rain
It felt like I was watching us
Go down in a blaze
But I had no control
Every memory burns to the ground
I set fire to the rain

I was drowning in the sound
Of every voice inside my head
Telling me you'll never leave
So why am I feeling sad?

How many times do I have to lie?
Saying that I'm fine when I'm not
I gave you my heart but it came back
Damaged and broken, I know
You said you'd change but you didn't
'Cause nothing lasts forever
And even though I tried, I

Set fire to the rain
Threw your keys in the flame
Watched them go up in a swirl
Set fire to the rain
It felt like I was watching us
Go down in a blaze
But I had no control
Every memory burns to the ground
I set fire to the rain The song deals with a relationship that's falling apart, but the narrator isn't sitting around feeling sorry. She's done pretending everything is okay. The chorus image — setting fire to the rain — is essentially about doing something impossible and meaningless on purpose, the way you'd do it when you've already decided the relationship is over and you just want to stop pretending it isn't. It's a release valve, not a cry for help.

I've had people ask me where to find accurate lyrics online, and honestly, the biggest problem is that most lyric sites have typos or outdated versions. I once spent twenty minutes trying to figure out whether the bridge said "drowning in the sound" or "drowning in the sound of every voice inside my head" because one site had it truncated. Turns out the full line is there if you check the official lyric video or Adele's own verified pages. The safest sources are usually the lyrics that come bundled with the album on streaming platforms, or the official site. Third-party lyric aggregators are hit or miss. One thing people often get wrong about this song is the tempo and structure. It's in a moderate 4/4, sits around 75 BPM, and the key is E minor. The vocal range goes from about A3 up to E5, which is why it's such a common choice for covers — the chorus opens up nicely but doesn't require soprano-range power. If you're learning it, the trick is the bridge. That "I was drowning in the sound" section builds gradually and then drops back into the final chorus. Most people rush through it. Don't. Let it breathe the way Adele does. The music video, directed by Sam Brown, features Adele in a house that keeps catching fire as rain pours through the roof. The imagery matches the lyrics pretty directly — the rain and the fire existing at the same time, which is exactly the impossibility the song is built around. Not every detail needs to be decoded, but the visual reinforces what the words are saying.

If you need a clean copy of the lyrics for personal use — quoting in an essay, making a poster, whatever — the best approach is to grab them from a licensed source. AZLyrics, Genius, and the official Adele site all have them. Just note that Genius versions sometimes include editorial notes that aren't part of the actual lyrics, so double-check if you're pasting the words themselves.
