Torpor in Ark: A Practical Breakdown
When you are knocking something out in Ark, you need to understand what actually generates torpor versus what just deals damage. This matters because hitting a creature with the wrong projectile can kill it before you even get it unconscious. A Tranquilizer Dart deals significantly more torpor than a Metal Arrow. This is straightforward if you look at the raw numbers. A standard Metal Arrow does about 0.4 to 0.5 torpor per hit on most creatures, depending on their resistances. A Metal Tranquilizer Dart does roughly 37 to 41 torpor per hit against the same target. That is roughly 80 to 90 times more torpor per shot. I learned this the hard way during my first attempt to take down a Megalosaurus. I was using Metal Arrows because I had a bunch of them cached in my inventory and I was trying to conserve darts. After about forty or fifty arrows, the Megalossaurs health was down to about ten percent and it still had a torpor level of roughly 20. It woke up right in the middle of my setup. I ended up having to run away and reset. After that, I switched entirely to tranq darts and knocked it out in under six shots.
The reason for the massive difference comes down to how each projectile is designed. Arrows are primary damage weapons. Torpor is a secondary, almost incidental stat. Darts are purpose-built for non-lethal takedowns. Their entire damage profile is tuned around torpor generation with minimal health damage so you can stack hits safely. There are edge cases where this flips, but only in very specific situations. If you are using a Crossbow with a Metal Arrow against a creature with extreme arrow resistance and low dart resistance, the damage per second can make the arrow approach faster. But for actual torpor yield, the dart still wins by a wide margin. The only time I have seen Metal Arrows compete is on very small creatures where a single dart would overshoot and knock them unconscious with too much torpor margin, making them harder to wake on demand. If you are playing the Primal Fear content and looking at weapon tiers, the comparison stays the same. Metal Darts dominate for torpor. The only real variable is whether your creature has access to a Crossbow or a Bow. Crossbows fire faster but darts still carry far more torpor per shot. If you are farming torpor efficiently, stick with darts and upgrade your crafting materials from wood to stone to metal in that order. Each tier jump roughly doubles the torpor output per dart while keeping health damage manageable.
