Several wearables are commercially available, with different configurations, sensors, algorithms, and forms of communication. Choosing the “best” wearable depends on the information you need to make decisions, how often you need this information, and the level of accuracy required. In this article, we review six use cases for wearables that are relevant to the military and first responders. We examine the metrics measured and the wearables used. We conclude with recommendations for requirements and wearable selection given the constraints imposed by various use cases.

biotel heart monitor instructions: Assisted Circulation 2 Felix Unger, 2012-12-06 It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to edit a new volume of Assisted Circulation. In the past 5 years there have been many changes in the philosophy of assisted circulation. There have been a large number of clinical application- of left ventricular assist devices, biventricular assist devices, and total artificial hearts; one artificial heart was implanted electively in December, 1982, in a patient with an end-stage cardiomyopathy. A great deal of help is necessary in editing a book. I want especially to thank the Austrian Research Council and the University of Innsbruck for their support of my work. I am most grateful to my co-workers R. Schistek, I. Koller, J. Hager, and R. Nessler, and especially to my secretary, W. Kirchner, who had the most secretarial load ofthe editorial work. I would also like to thank Dr. J. Wieczorek, Mrs. M. Schafer, Mrs. M. Griindler, and the Springer staff who gave this second volume an attractive format and made it accurate as usual. It was with great sorrow that we learned of the sad death of Dr. Emery Nyilas in June 1984, who played a great part in the development of artificial hearts. I hope that this second volume will also raise new items for discussion, resulting in new concepts, so that the third volume can introduce new devices and report on more clinical applications.

biotel heart monitor instructions: Assessing Medical Preparedness to Respond to a Terrorist Nuclear Event Institute of Medicine, Board on Health Sciences Policy, Committee on Medical Preparedness for a Terrorist Nuclear Event, 2009-09-19 A nuclear attack on a large U.S. city by terrorists-even with a low-yield improvised nuclear device (IND) of 10 kilotons or less-would cause a large number of deaths and severe injuries. The large number of injured from the detonation and radioactive fallout that would follow would be overwhelming for local emergency response and health care systems to rescue and treat, even assuming that these systems and their personnel were not themselves incapacitated by the event. The United States has been struggling for some time to address and plan for the threat of nuclear terrorism and other weapons of mass destruction that terrorists might obtain and use. The Department of Homeland Security recently contracted with the Institute of Medicine to hold a workshop, summarized in this volume, to assess medical preparedness for a nuclear detonation of up to 10 kilotons. This book provides a candid and sobering look at our current state of preparedness for an IND, and identifies several key areas in which we might begin to focus our national efforts in a way that will improve the overall level of preparedness.
biotel heart monitor instructions: Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Phocids Daniel P. Costa, Elizabeth A. McHuron, 2022-03-17 Phocid (or earless or true) seals are ecologically diverse, occupying habitats from the tropics to the poles in marine and freshwater and feeding on anything from tiny zooplankton to other marine mammals. There are 18 species of phocid seals, the smallest species (ringed seal) is more than 20 times smaller than the largest (southern elephant seal), with marked sexual dimorphism present in some species. This book examines the behavior, ecology, and physiology that allow phocid seals to inhabit such a wide range of habitats. The book is composed of 16 chapters written by 37 authors from 8 countries. The book first describes the general patterns of phocid behavior, followed by descriptions of what is known about well-studied species. We have taken a holistic approach, focusing not only on the behaviors themselves but also on the factors that constrain the expression of behavior and the proximate mechanisms driving behavior. In many cases, the chapters represent collaborations between well-established researchers and early-mid career individuals who bring new perspectives to help carry the field of phocid behavioral ecology well into the future.

biotel heart monitor instructions: Fish Physiology: Euryhaline Fishes Stephen D. McCormick, Anthony Peter Farrell, Colin Brauner, 2013-01-11 The need for ion and water homeostasis is common to all life. For fish, ion and water homeostasis is an especially important challenge because they live in direct contact with water and because of the large variation in the salt content of natural waters (varying by over 5 orders of magnitude). Most fish are stenohaline and are unable to move between freshwater and seawater. Remarkably, some fishes are capable of life in both freshwater and seawater. These euryhaline fishes constitute an estimated 3 to 5% of all fish species. Euryhaline fishes represent some of the most iconic and interesting of all fish species, from salmon and sturgeon that make epic migrations to intertidal mudskippers that contend with daily salinity changes. With the advent of global climate change and increasing sea levels, understanding the environmental physiology of euryhaline species is critical for environmental management and any mitigative measures. This volume will provide the first integrative review of euryhalinity in fish. There is no other book that focuses on fish that have the capacity to move between freshwater and seawater. The different challenges of salt and water balance in different habitats have led to different physiological controls and regulation, which heretofore has not been reviewed in a single volume. - Collects and synthesizes the literature covering the state of knowledge of the physiology of euryhaline fish - Provides the foundational information needed for researchers from a variety of fields, including fish physiology, conservation and evolutionary biology, genomics, ecology, ecotoxicology, and comparative physiology - All authors are the leading researchers and emerging leaders in their fields
