bischoff's teaneck history: Teaneck Jay Levin, 2020-01-27 Originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Indians and settled by the Dutch, Teaneck has come to embody the American experience. Created in 1895 from the vast, wooded estate of its most eminent citizen, William Walter Phelps, the bucolic township along the Hackensack River boomed in the 1920s, its population quadrupling during construction of the nearby George Washington Bridge to New York City. Developers could not put up homes fast enough in a suburb offering beauty, location, and every convenience. Drawing on rarely seen photographs and other materials from the Teaneck Public Library and private collections, Teaneck chronicles the intriguing history of a community of myriad distinctions: exemplar of successful municipal management, model town deemed worthy of emulation, college town, and, in the 1960s, the first majority-white community in the United States to voluntarily integrate its school system. |

The quiet New York suburb of Yonkers hides a history of hauntings. Now converted into apartments, old Public School 13 is the site of strange apparitions that may be ghosts of former students and teachers who died in a tragic fire. The Boyce Thompson Institute’s lofty goal of solving world hunger was never met, and unfulfilled spirits are said to lurk in its abandoned laboratory. Wealthy colonial landowners still watch over stately historic homes like Philipse Manor Hall. Even the iconic Untermyer Park is a playground for the otherworldly. Local ghost investigator Jason Medina reveals these and other ghosts of Yonkers. |

bischoff's teaneck history: The Dream Revisited Ingrid Ellen, Justin Steil, 2019-01-15 A half century after the Fair Housing Act, despite ongoing transformations of the geography of privilege and poverty, residential segregation by race and income continues to shape urban and suburban neighborhoods in the United States. Why do people live where they do? What explains segregation’s persistence? And why is addressing segregation so complicated? The Dream Revisited brings together a range of expert viewpoints on the causes and consequences of the nation’s separate and unequal living patterns. Leading scholars and practitioners, including civil rights advocates, affordable housing developers, elected officials, and fair housing lawyers, discuss the nature of and policy responses to residential segregation. Essays scrutinize the factors that sustain segregation, including persistent barriers to mobility and complex neighborhood preferences, and its consequences from health to home finance and from policing to politics. They debate how actively and in what ways the government should intervene in housing markets to foster integration. The book features timely analyses of issues such as school integration, mixed income housing, and responses to gentrification from a diversity of viewpoints. A probing examination of a deeply rooted problem, The Dream Revisited offers pressing insights into the changing face of urban inequality. |
bischoff's teaneck history: Helluva Town , 2008 At the end of World War II New York City went through a period of transformation - loved ones were reunited and babies were born into a new era. African American soldiers who fought in the name of democracy demanded equal rights at home. Women left the factories and returned to the domestic front to raise children and cater to their husbands. Vivian Cherry charts this period with lively vignettes full of compassion and gritty street scenes exuding social conciousness. |
bischoff's teaneck history: Architects Draw Sue Ferguson Gussow, 2013-07-02 Architects Draw offers a practical and invaluable way to help students and would-be sketchers translate what they see onto the page, not as an imitation of reality, but as a comprehensive union of voids and solids, light and shadows, lines and shapes. For nearly forty years revered Cooper Union professor and artist Sue Gussow has taught aspiring architects of varying abilities how to fully observe and perceive the spaces that make up our physical environment. Gussow skillfully applies architectural language to twenty-one drawing exercises that tackle a variety of forms--from peas in a pod to monkeys, skeletons, dinosaur bones, and the art of Giacometti and Mondrian. She shows, for example, how cut fruit and paper bags reveal that the physical world is made up of planes, dimensions, and enclosed space. |

bischoff's teaneck history: Urban Socio-Economic Segregation and Income Inequality Maarten van Ham, Tiit Tammaru, Rūta Ubarevičienė, Heleen Janssen, 2021-03-29 This open access book investigates the link between income inequality and socio-economic residential segregation in 24 large urban regions in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. It offers a unique global overview of segregation trends based on case studies by local author teams. The book shows important global trends in segregation, and proposes a Global Segregation Thesis. Rising inequalities lead to rising levels of socio-economic segregation almost everywhere in the world. Levels of inequality and segregation are higher in cities in lower income countries, but the growth in inequality and segregation is faster in cities in high-income countries. This is causing convergence of segregation trends. Professionalisation of the workforce is leading to changing residential patterns. High-income workers are moving to city centres or to attractive coastal areas and gated communities, while poverty is increasingly suburbanising. As a result, the urban geography of inequality changes faster and is more pronounced than changes in segregation levels. Rising levels of inequality and segregation pose huge challenges for the future social sustainability of cities, as cities are no longer places of opportunities for all. |

bischoff's teaneck history: Mannahatta Eric W. Sanderson, 2013-11-27 What did New York look like four centuries ago? An extraordinary reconstruction of a wild island from the forests of Times Square to the wetlands downtown. Named a Best Book of the Year by Library Journal, New York Magazine, and San Francisco Chronicle On September 12, 1609, Henry Hudson first set foot on the land that would become Manhattan. Today, it’s difficult to imagine what he saw, but for more than a decade, landscape ecologist Eric Sanderson has been working to do just that. Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City is the astounding result of those efforts, reconstructing in words and images the wild island that millions now call home. By geographically matching an eighteenth-century map with one of the modern city, examining volumes of historic documents, and collecting and analyzing scientific data, Sanderson re-creates topography, flora, and fauna from a time when actual wolves prowled far beyond Wall Street and the degree of biological diversity rivaled that of our most famous national parks. His lively text guides you through this abundant landscape—while breathtaking illustrations transport you back in time. Mannahatta is a groundbreaking work that provides not only a window into the past, but also inspiration for the future. “[A] wise and beautiful book, sure to enthrall anyone interested in NYC history.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A cartographical detective tale . . . The fact-intense charts, maps and tables offered in abundance here are fascinating.” —The New York Times “[An] exuberantly written and beautifully illustrated exploration of pre-European Gotham.” —San Francisco Chronicle “You don’t have to be a New Yorker to be enthralled.” —Library Journal |
bischoff's teaneck history: Generation on Fire Jeff Kisseloff, 2006-12-29 “An invigorating collection of fifteen testimonials from counter-culturists, conscientious objectors, and artists who came of age” during the ’60s (Publishers Weekly). Many of the freedoms and rights Americans enjoy today are the direct result of those who defied the established order during the Civil Rights Era. It was an era that challenged both mainstream and elite American notions of how politics and society should function. In Generation on Fire, oral historian Jeff Kisseloff provides an eclectic and personal account of the political and social activity of the decade. Among other things, the book offers firsthand accounts of what it was like to face a mob's wrath in the segregated South and to survive the jungles of Vietnam. It takes readers inside the courtroom of the Chicago Eight and into a communal household in Vermont. From the stage at Woodstock to the playing fields of the NFL and finally to a fateful confrontation at Kent State, Generation on Fire brings the '60s alive again. This collection of never-before published interviews illuminates the ingrained social and cultural obstacles facing those working for change as well as the courage and shortcomings of those who defied acceptable conventions and mores. Sometimes tragic, sometimes hilarious, the stories in this volume celebrate the passion, courage, and independent thinking that led a generation to believe change for the better was possible. |
