biology terms that start with y: Mathematical Models in Population Biology and Epidemiology Fred Brauer, Carlos Castillo-Chavez, 2001-03-30 The goal of this book is to search for a balance between simple and analyzable models and unsolvable models which are capable of addressing important questions on population biology. Part I focusses on single species simple models including those which have been used to predict the growth of human and animal population in the past. Single population models are, in some sense, the building blocks of more realistic models -- the subject of Part II. Their role is fundamental to the study of ecological and demographic processes including the role of population structure and spatial heterogeneity -- the subject of Part III. This book, which will include both examples and exercises, is of use to practitioners, graduate students, and scientists working in the field. |

biology terms that start with y: Computational Systems Biology of Pathogen-Host Interactions Saliha Durmuş, Tunahan Çakır, Reinhard Guthke, Emrah Nikerel, Arzucan Özgür, 2016-05-30 A thorough understanding of pathogenic microorganisms and their interactions with host organisms is crucial to prevent infectious threats due to the fact that Pathogen-Host Interactions (PHIs) have critical roles in initiating and sustaining infections. Therefore, the analysis of infection mechanisms through PHIs is indispensable to identify diagnostic biomarkers and next-generation drug targets and then to develop strategic novel solutions against drug-resistance and for personalized therapy. Traditional approaches are limited in capturing mechanisms of infection since they investigate hosts or pathogens individually. On the other hand, the systems biology approach focuses on the whole PHI system, and is more promising in capturing infection mechanisms. Here, we bring together studies on the below listed sections to present the current picture of the research on Computational Systems Biology of Pathogen-Host Interactions: - Computational Inference of PHI Networks using Omics Data - Computational Prediction of PHIs - Text Mining of PHI Data from the Literature - Mathematical Modeling and Bioinformatic Analysis of PHIs Computational Inference of PHI Networks using Omics Data Gene regulatory, metabolic and protein-protein networks of PHI systems are crucial for a thorough understanding of infection mechanisms. Great advances in molecular biology and biotechnology have allowed the production of related omics data experimentally. Many computational methods are emerging to infer molecular interaction networks of PHI systems from the corresponding omics data. Computational Prediction of PHIs Due to the lack of experimentally-found PHI data, many computational methods have been developed for the prediction of pathogen-host protein-protein interactions. Despite being emerging, currently available experimental PHI data are far from complete for a systems view of infection mechanisms through PHIs. Therefore, computational methods are the main tools to predict new PHIs. To this end, the development of new computational methods is of great interest. Text Mining of PHI Data from Literature Despite the recent development of many PHI-specific databases, most data relevant to PHIs are still buried in the biomedical literature, which demands for the use of text mining techniques to unravel PHIs hidden in the literature. Only some rare efforts have been performed to achieve this aim. Therefore, the development of novel text mining methods specific for PHI data retrieval is of key importance for efficient use of the available literature. Mathematical Modeling and Bioinformatic Analysis of PHIs After the reconstruction of PHI networks experimentally and/or computationally, their mathematical modeling and detailed computational analysis is required using bioinformatics tools to get insights on infection mechanisms. Bioinformatics methods are increasingly applied to analyze the increasing amount of experimentally-found and computationally-predicted PHI data. |

biology terms that start with y: Fundamentals of Systems Biology Markus W. Covert, 2017-10-19 For decades biology has focused on decoding cellular processes one gene at a time, but many of the most pressing biological questions, as well as diseases such as cancer and heart disease, are related to complex systems involving the interaction of hundreds, or even thousands, of gene products and other factors. How do we begin to understand this complexity? Fundamentals of Systems Biology: From Synthetic Circuits to Whole-cell Models introduces students to methods they can use to tackle complex systems head-on, carefully walking them through studies that comprise the foundation and frontier of systems biology. The first section of the book focuses on bringing students quickly up to speed with a variety of modeling methods in the context of a synthetic biological circuit. This innovative approach builds intuition about the strengths and weaknesses of each method and becomes critical in the book’s second half, where much more complicated network models are addressed—including transcriptional, signaling, metabolic, and even integrated multi-network models. The approach makes the work much more accessible to novices (undergraduates, medical students, and biologists new to mathematical modeling) while still having much to offer experienced modelers--whether their interests are microbes, organs, whole organisms, diseases, synthetic biology, or just about any field that investigates living systems. |

biology terms that start with y: Theoretical Biology and Complexity Robert J. Rosen, 2013-09-03 Theoretical Biology and Complexity: Three Essays on the Natural Philosophy of Complex Systems is made up of three short essays—each separately conceived and written, each with distinct thrusts and emphases, but nevertheless closely related in substance and spirit. All three spring from a common concern: to grasp and comprehend the material basis of living systems. The first essay is about the interaction between particles and the consequent observable manifestations. It casts the analysis of the measurement process into an elegant dualism relating modes of description, and explores the consequences of this dualism for what may be called classical physics. The second essay explores the deeper consequences of representing the properties of natural systems through states built up out of observable quantities, and the dynamics that such systems impose on each other through interactions. The final essay argues that traditional modes of system representation, involving fixed sets of states together with imposed dynamical laws, strictly pertains only to an extremely limited class of systems (called simple systems or mechanisms). Systems not in this class are called complex, and these can only be in some sense approximated, locally and temporally, by simple ones. Such a radical alteration of viewpoint leads to a large number of concrete, practical consequences, some of which are described in the essay. |

biology terms that start with y: Biology and Mathematics Roger Buis, 2019-09-24 To formalize the dynamics of living things is to search for invariants in a system that contains an irreducible aspect of “fuzziness”, because biological processes are characterized by their large statistical variability, and strong dependence on temporal and environmental factors. What is essential is the identification of what remains stable in a “living being” that is highly fluctuating. The use of mathematics is not limited to the use of calculating tools to simulate and predict results. It also allows us to adopt a way of thinking that is founded on concepts and hypotheses, leading to their discussion and validation. Instruments of mathematical intelligibility and coherence have gradually “fashioned” the view we now have of biological systems. Teaching and research, fundamental or applied, are now dependent on this new order known as Integrative Biology or Systems Biology. |
biology terms that start with y: Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health Institute of Medicine, Board on Health Sciences Policy, Committee on Understanding the Biology of Sex and Gender Differences, 2001-07-02 It's obvious why only men develop prostate cancer and why only women get ovarian cancer. But it is not obvious why women are more likely to recover language ability after a stroke than men or why women are more apt to develop autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Sex differences in health throughout the lifespan have been documented. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health begins to snap the pieces of the puzzle into place so that this knowledge can be used to improve health for both sexes. From behavior and cognition to metabolism and response to chemicals and infectious organisms, this book explores the health impact of sex (being male or female, according to reproductive organs and chromosomes) and gender (one's sense of self as male or female in society). Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health discusses basic biochemical differences in the cells of males and females and health variability between the sexes from conception throughout life. The book identifies key research needs and opportunities and addresses barriers to research. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health will be important to health policy makers, basic, applied, and clinical researchers, educators, providers, and journalists-while being very accessible to interested lay readers. |
biology terms that start with y: Foundations of Theoretical Approaches in Systems Biology Alberto Marin-Sanguino, Julio Vera, Rui Alves, 2019-01-11 If biology in the 20th century was characterized by an explosion of new technologies and experimental methods, that of the 21st has seen an equally exuberant proliferation of mathematical and computational methods that attempt to systematize and explain the abundance of available data. As we live through the consolidation of a new paradigm where experimental data goes hand in hand with computational analysis, we contemplate the challenge of fusing these two aspects of the new biology into a consistent theoretical framework. Whether systems biology will survive as a field or be washed away by the tides of future fads will ultimately depend on its success to achieve this type of synthesis. The famous quote attributed to Kurt Lewin comes to mind: there is nothing more practical than a good theory. This book presents a wide assortment of articles on systems biology in an attempt to capture the variety of current methods in systems biology and show how they can help to find answers to the challenges of modern biology. |

biology terms that start with y: Biology, History, and Natural Philosophy A. D. Breck, 2012-12-06 In a world that peers over the brink of disaster more often than not it is difficul t to find specific assignments for the scholarly community. One speaks of peace and brotherhood only to realize that for many the only real hope of making a contribution may seem to be in a field of scientific specialization seemingly irrelevant to social causes and problems. Yet the history of man since the beginnings of science in the days of the Greeks does not support this gloomy thesis. Time and again we have seen science precipitate social trends or changes in the humanistic beliefs that have a significant effect on. the scientific community. Not infrequently the theoretical scientist, triggered by society's changing goals and understandings, finds ultimate satisfaction in the work of his colleagues in engineering and the other applied fields. Thus the major debate in mid-nineteenth century in which the evidence of natural history and geology at variance with the Biblical feats provided not only courage to a timid Darwin but the kind of audience that was needed to fit his theories into the broad public dialogue on these topics. The impact of Darwinism was felt far beyond the scientific community. It affected social thought, upset religious certainties and greatly affected the teaching of science. |
