Z., 2020-03-02 Positing the notions of coloniality of ignorance and geopolitics of ignorance as central to coloniality and colonisation, this book examines how colonialists socially produced ignorance among colonised indigenous peoples so as to render them docile and manageable. Dismissing colonial descriptions of indigenous people as savages, illiterate, irrational, prelogical, mystical, primitive, barbaric and backward, the book argues that imperialists/colonialists contrived geopolitics of ignorance wherein indigenous regions were forced to become ignorant, hence containable and manageable in the imperial world. Questioning the provenance of modernist epistemologies, the book asks why Eurocentric scholars only contest the provenance of indigenous knowledges, artefacts and scientific collections. Interrogating why empire sponsors the decolonisation of universities/epistemologies in indigenous territories while resisting the repatriation/restitution of indigenous artefacts, the book also wonders why Westerners who still retain indigenous artefacts, skulls and skeletons in their museums, universities and private collections do not consider such artefacts and skulls to be colonising them as well. The authors explore concepts such as daughtering, politicking, mother speak, and cultural exchange while employing linguistic expressions such as prose, text messages, dialogue, and personal narrative—firmly planted in authentic Black womanist aesthetics. Furthermore, the authors highlight and demonstrate why and how they utilize reading and Black women's literary works to critically reflect, meaningfully write, heal, and do their work in times of peril (Morrison, 2019). More specifically, this book explores how the authors draw from Black women's cultural literacies in teaching, healing, mentoring, and activism. How are Black women's literary works as a body of knowledge used in healing spaces to marshal new or forgotten healing methodologies, cultural frame of references, and spiritual awakenings? The contributing authors address this question from multiple perspectives, such as education, social work, and psychology. Collectively, the authors advance Black women's mental wealth as a theoretical and methodological healing modality that meets their multiple identities as spiritual and cultural beings, educators, daughters, mothers, sisters, healers, and social activists. This is the first anthology to explore how Black women's literacy during a state of racial unrest and resistance alongside a global health pandemic shapes our cultural knowledge, ways of coping, and spiritual endeavors across varied-and often ambiguous contexts. |

black history in stem: Freedom dreaming futures for Black youth: Exploring meanings of liberation in education and psychology research Seanna Leath, Lauren Mims, Misha Inniss-Thompson, 2023-07-21 Research elucidating the developmental processes in Black children and youths' schooling and educative experiences is increasing (e.g., Carter-Andrews et al., 2019; Daneshzadeh & Sirrakos, 2018; Jackson & Howard, 2014; Neal-Jackson, 2018). Yet, the notion of “freedom dreaming” in relation to Black children and youth has received less attention within the fields of education and psychology. We draw from U.S. historian, Professor Robin D.G. Kelley's, concept of freedom dreaming to illuminate not only what we are fighting against in the education of Black youth (e.g., racial bias and discrimination, unfair disciplinary practices and criminalization, and Black youths' overrepresentation in special education and underrepresentation in gifted and talented programs), but also what we are fighting for - liberatory educational praxis that build on Black youths' individual and cultural strengths. In the current call, freedom dreaming refers to: (1) actively uplifting the complex lives and stories of Black children and youth in educational settings; (2) elevating Black children and youths' intersectional experiences related to ability, gender identity, sexuality, age, and socio-economic class; and (3) highlighting the innovative work of scholars who understand and value community power in efforts to advance educational change. We draw on Dr. Bettina Love's (2019) call for educational freedom, wherein she states, “The practice of abolitionist teaching is rooted in the internal desire we all have for freedom, joy, restorative justice (restoring humanity, not just rules), and to matter to ourselves, our community, our family, and our country with the profound understanding that we must “demand the impossible” by refusing injustice and the disposability of dark children.” (p. 7) |
