bits pilani distance education: Distance Education Paul Birevu Muyinda, 2012-09-19 Education has become the number one demanded commodity for social and economic transformation for both developing and developed economies. Thus the number of persons going and returning to school has become too big to be handled by existing brick and mortar learning institutions. Besides, the majority of lifelong learners do not have the time to become full-time students. Distance education is becoming the solution to the aforementioned challenges. It has been defined as the mode of study where the learner is separated in time and space from the institution and tutors providing the tuition. |
bits pilani distance education: Build and Sustain a Career in Engineering Anindya Chatterjee, 2021-02-14 A must read for students standing at the edge of choosing their careers, and for others to look back and help the next generation. Dr. Vijay Patel, Technology Director, Flight control laws LCA, IFCS, ADA Bangalore. An excellent collection of personal experiences and a narrative interspersed with real advice, opinions and actionable insights that can guide generations. A must read. Rajat Jain, business mentor for early stage startups, ex MD, Xerox India and Walt Disney India. This remarkable book works at many levels. At one, it is a lucidly explained guide that, with the lightest of touch, hand-holds and empowers students to prepare them for what lies beyond the classroom. At another, it is a veritable manual for our work and life. As technology reshapes both, the book offers invaluable insight into what each means and how we can better navigate the increasingly permeable walls between the two. Raj Kamal Jha, engineer, journalist, novelist, and Chief Editor of The Indian Express. Blurb: Many career advice books are written by senior managers and entrepreneurs for senior managers and entrepreneurs. Other career advice books are written by people whose career consists of giving career advice. This book is written for young engineers by an engineering professor who is currently engaged in teaching and research. The book emphasizes a long-term view. Engineering is not learned in four years. If you are alert, and keep learning and integrating ideas along the way, then you slowly build up a type of understanding that newcomers cannot match. This helps you build a sustainable career. Do not be distracted by the apparent success of a few people who seem to take shortcuts. For most people, statistics will apply. For most people, and therefore probably for you as well, success will be more likely if you develop long term value. |

Lee, 2012-12-06 Recent advances in the field of fracture of engineering materials and structures have increasingly indicated its multidisciplinary nature. This area of research now involves scientists and engineers who work in materials science, applied mathematics and mechanics, and also computer scientists. The present volume, which contains the Proceedings of the Joint FEFG/lCF International Conference on Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures held in Singapore from the 6th to 8th of August 1991, is a testimony of this multidisciplinary nature. This International Conference was the Second Symposium of the Far East Fracture Group (FEFG) and thus provided a unique opportunity for researchers and engineers in the Far East region to exchange and acquire knowledge of new advances and applications in fracture. The Conference was also the Inter-Quadrennial International Conference on Fracture (ICF) for 1991 and thus appealed to researchers in the international arena who wished to take advantage of this meeting to present their findings. The Conference has brought together over 130 participants from more than 24 countries, and they represented government and industrial research laboratories as well as academic institutions. It has thus achieved its objective of bringing together scientists and engineers with different backgrounds and perspectives but with . a common interest in new developments in the fracture of engineering materials and structures. This volume contains 4 keynote papers, 4 invited papers and 130 contributed papers. |

bits pilani distance education: Pharmaceutical Process Development John Blacker, Michael T Williams, 2011-08-17 Pharmaceutical process research and development is an exacting, multidisciplinary effort but a somewhat neglected discipline in the chemical curriculum. This book presents an overview of the many facets of process development and how recent advances in synthetic organic chemistry, process technology and chemical engineering have impacted on the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. In 15 concise chapters the book covers such diverse subjects as route selection and economics, the interface with medicinal chemistry, the impact of green chemistry, safety, the crucial role of physical organic measurements in gaining a deeper understanding of chemical behaviour, the role of the analyst, new tools and innovations in reactor design, purification and separation, solid state chemistry and its role in formulation. The book ends with an assessment of future trends and challenges. The book provides a valuable overview of: both early and late stage chemical development, how safe and scaleable synthetic routes are designed, selected and developed, the importance of the chemical engineering, analytical and manufacturing interfaces, the key enabling technologies, including catalysis and biocatalysis, the importance of the green chemical perspective and solid form issues. The book, written and edited by experts in the field, is a contemporary, holistic treatise, with a logical sequence for process development and mini-case histories within the chapters to bring alive different aspects of the process. It is completely pharmaceutical themed, encompassing all essential aspects, from route and reagent selection to manufacture of the active compound. The book is aimed at both graduates and postgraduates interested in a career in the pharmaceutical industry. It informs them about the breadth of the work carried out in chemical research and development departments, and gives them a feel for the challenges involved in the job. The book is also of value to academics who often understand the drug discovery arena, but have far less appreciation of the drug development area, and are thus unable to advise their students about the relative merits of careers in chemical development versus discovery. |

In these years, he has met hundreds of government school teachers—profoundly committed to improving the lives of the children in their care. These are teachers who defy all constraints because of a burning belief that every child can learn. bits pilani distance education: Fifty Years of Higher Education in India Amrik Singh, 2004-04-08 `A very useful reader, providing an excellent and authentic perspective on higher education and UGC in India' - Educational Review The University Grants Commission (UGC) was established by an Act of Parliament at the end of 1953. Its charter was to regulate and control all tertiary level institutions in the country and to determine standards of higher and professional education. From the time the UGC was set up, there has been an exponential growth in the number of higher academic institutions which today employ more than 400,000 teachers with a student body in excess of 9 million. Recent years have also witnessed the mushrooming of private institutions which are largely beyond the remit of the UGC. The result is a chaotic situation where institutions are free to do what they want with little concern for students. This is the first book length study of the functioning of the UGC and, indirectly, of fifty years of higher education in India. Written by an eminent educationist, it critically examines the way in which the UGC has performed since its inception and determines the reasons for its failure. Dr Amrik Singh maintains that the powers given to the UGC are severely limited and that, combined with poor internal management, this has made it a largely ineffective body. The author offers a number of practical solutions which, if implemented, could go a long way towards ameliorating the problems facing the UGC today. These include: ̈ Amending the UGC Act to grant it more statutory and disciplinary powers. ̈ Adequate financial and administrative support from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. ̈ Expanding the UGC's role of accreditation. ̈ Strengthening the educational structure at the state level. ̈ Designing new modes of testing in universities and colleges. ̈ Encouraging teachers to take a greater leadership role. ̈ Developing mechanisms for student assessment of teachers. This book is neither a scholarly work nor an historical account of the UGC. Rather, it is a critical assessment of an institution whose role is central to the field of higher education in India. Timely and topical it will be of immense interest to educationists and policy makers in the field of higher education, as also to the general reader. |
