One of the girls named Claudia is a woman studying art at the University of Michigan. Bob and Claudia hit it off quickly and begin dating. Over the course of a few months, they learn a lot about each other and have sophisticated and intellectual conversations about the world, life, and art. During the course of the play Bob, a mental health patient, who is on heavy sedatives, is also a heavy drinker, and a pot smoker decides to quit it all because he's afraid that this lifestyle will lead him down a deadly path to his premature demise. A few weeks into his life of sobriety he gets ill but rises through with the help of his girlfriend Claudia. Shortly after he quits all of the drugs he was abusing, Claudia moves away to go to art school in San Francisco at the Academy of Art University. After she leaves, Bob finds himself struggling at coming up with creativity for his artwork. He finds creative ways to liberate himself from this position by hallucinating pictures that are in his head and draws the outlines and shading from what he sees visually onto the paper and canvas. Shortly thereafter, he realizes that he's gotten himself in a pool of debt and wants to find a way out, so he decides to try to get into the army as a musician. At the recruiter's office, he finds himself nodding off in the back room where he was supposed to get his paperwork filled out and goes into a dreamland of make-believe with all sorts of fantastic creatures that he would like to draw out. Briefly, after he wakes up the Army recruiters figure out he has a mental illness through their background check. Ultimately and unfortunately his chances of being recruited into the military are null and void. Subsequently, he becomes hell-bent on writing a story and he decides to write a book about his life which is the actual story itself. During the process of becoming a writer, he finds himself hallucinating words on the page, and words and sentences alike disappear before his eyes. This becomes an enormous burden for him and this eventually leads to a meltdown and he destroys his apartment. One of the tenants in the building hears his destruction taking place and he calls the police. When the officer arrives to check out the situation, Bob lies about what happened saying he invited some friends over and that they did this to him. The officer, knowing very well that Bob was the actual perpetrator of the incident, gets to the bottom of the situation and persuades Bob into confessing rather quickly. The officer knows he has a past history of mental illness and informs Bob that he should go to the psychiatric hospital. Bob gives the officer the okay to call the paramedics and goes to the hospital. At the hospital, Bob tries hard to stay away from taking any medication, but they force an injection on him which turns his world upside down. He sleeps continually and can't eat, and the constant feeling of illness drives him to suicide. He slams his head through a window and slices his neck on the sharp, jagged fragments of the remaining glass. In the alternate ending, we find Bob waking and realizing he's in a hospital bed with Claudia by his side. Once he has woken completely he finds out from Claudia that he was in a coma for a week due to being hit in the head by someone with a pool cue one night at a bar. He then figures out that he had dreamed up getting off his medications and the drinking and pot smoking he indulged in and everything from that point on till the end.
