blackboard foot training alternative: Dead Reckoning Diane Vaughan, 2023-02-13 Vaughan unveils the complicated and high-pressure world of air traffic controllers as they navigate technology and political and public climates, and shows how they keep the skies so safe. When two airplanes were flown into the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001, Americans watched in uncomprehending shock as first responders struggled to react to the situation on the ground. Congruently, another remarkable and heroic feat was taking place in the air: more than six hundred and fifty air traffic control facilities across the country coordinated their efforts to ground four thousand flights in just two hours—an achievement all the more impressive considering the unprecedented nature of the task. In Dead Reckoning, Diane Vaughan explores the complex work of air traffic controllers, work that is built upon a close relationship between human organizational systems and technology and is remarkably safe given the high level of risk. Vaughan observed the distinct skill sets of air traffic controllers and the ways their workplaces changed to adapt to technological developments and public and political pressures. She chronicles the ways these forces affected their jobs, from their relationships with one another and the layouts of their workspace to their understanding of their job and its place in society. The result is a nuanced and engaging look at an essential role that demands great coordination, collaboration, and focus—a role that technology will likely never be able to replace. Even as the book conveys warnings about complex systems and the liabilities of technological and organizational innovation, it shows the kinds of problem-solving solutions that evolved over time and the importance of people. |

blackboard foot training alternative: The Sciences of the Artificial, reissue of the third edition with a new introduction by John Laird Herbert A. Simon, 2019-08-13 Herbert Simon's classic work on artificial intelligence in the expanded and updated third edition from 1996, with a new introduction by John E. Laird. Herbert Simon's classic and influential The Sciences of the Artificial declares definitively that there can be a science not only of natural phenomena but also of what is artificial. Exploring the commonalities of artificial systems, including economic systems, the business firm, artificial intelligence, complex engineering projects, and social plans, Simon argues that designed systems are a valid field of study, and he proposes a science of design. For this third edition, originally published in 1996, Simon added new material that takes into account advances in cognitive psychology and the science of design while confirming and extending the book's basic thesis: that a physical symbol system has the necessary and sufficient means for intelligent action. Simon won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1978 for his research into the decision-making process within economic organizations and the Turing Award (considered by some the computer science equivalent to the Nobel) with Allen Newell in 1975 for contributions to artificial intelligence, the psychology of human cognition, and list processing. The Sciences of the Artificial distills the essence of Simon's thought accessibly and coherently. This reissue of the third edition makes a pioneering work available to a new audience. |
blackboard foot training alternative: Taking Sides Joseph Rubinstein, Brent D. Slife, 1984 This third edition of Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Psychological Issues continues the purpose of providing students with well developed, carefully considered, and sharply opposed viewpoints on a number of enduring psychological issues. The editors provide a concise introduction to each issue and then stand back to allow the pro and contra essays to speak for themselves. These essays have been selected for liveliness and substance and represent the arguments of leading behavioral scientists and social commentators. The student who has thoughtfully examined opposing viewpoints on a number of important issues should soon perceive what other positions can be occupied on those issues and what other issues demand a careful consideration of antithetical viewpoints. It is the development of this critical approach to information which is the ultimate purpose of this and other Taking Sides volumes--Back cover |

blackboard foot training alternative: The Structuring of Organizations Henry Mintzberg, 2009 Synthesizes the empirical literature on organizationalstructuring to answer the question of how organizations structure themselves --how they resolve needed coordination and division of labor. Organizationalstructuring is defined as the sum total of the ways in which an organizationdivides and coordinates its labor into distinct tasks. Further analysis of theresearch literature is neededin order to builda conceptualframework that will fill in the significant gap left by not connecting adescription of structure to its context: how an organization actuallyfunctions. The results of the synthesis are five basic configurations (the SimpleStructure, the Machine Bureaucracy, the Professional Bureaucracy, theDivisionalized Form, and the Adhocracy) that serve as the fundamental elementsof structure in an organization. Five basic parts of the contemporaryorganization (the operating core, the strategic apex, the middle line, thetechnostructure, and the support staff), and five theories of how it functions(i.e., as a system characterized by formal authority, regulated flows, informalcommunication, work constellations, and ad hoc decision processes) aretheorized. Organizations function in complex and varying ways, due to differing flows -including flows of authority, work material, information, and decisionprocesses. These flows depend on the age, size, and environment of theorganization; additionally, technology plays a key role because of itsimportance in structuring the operating core. Finally, design parameters aredescribed - based on the above five basic parts and five theories - that areused as a means of coordination and division of labor in designingorganizational structures, in order to establish stable patterns of behavior.(CJC). |

blackboard foot training alternative: Acting Without Agony Don Richardson, 1993 Most acting books approach acting and directing from the Stanislavsky method which advocates arriving at emotions by Affective Memory.'' This process asks the actor to use his/her own past experiences and graft them onto the character. Stanislavsky himself later rejected this and said it led to hysteria.'' Acting Without Agony offers an alternative to the method and teaches another way of arriving at emotions, which is described in detail throughout the text. It further maintains that acting should be fun and not a self-dissecting experience. This practical, step-by-step guide is organized into 18 lessons for achieving outstanding performance in acting and directing. It applies not only to the theatre, but to television and film as well. It is a true how-to book written mostly in dialogue between students and teacher. Through this format, the author is able to take the reader directly into the classroom as an effective learning aid. |
blackboard foot training alternative: Anatomy for Runners Jay Dicharry, 2012-12-12 Running has become more and more popular in recent years, with thousands of people entering marathons, buying new running shoes with the latest technology, and going for a daily jog, whether on the track or on a treadmill. Unfortunately, with running comes injuries, as a result of wrong information and improper training. Author Jay Dicharry was tired of getting the same treatments from doctors that didn’t heal his joint and muscle pain from running, so he decided to combine different fields of clinical care, biomechanical analysis, and coaching to help you avoid common injuries and become the best runner you can be. Along with clear and thorough explanations of how running influences the body, and how the body influences your running, this book answers many of the common questions that athletes have: Do runners need to stretch? What is the best way to run? What causes injuries? Which shoes are best for running? Is running barefoot beneficial? The mobility and stability tests will assess your form, and the corrective exercises, along with step-by-step photos, will improve your core and overall performance, so that you can train and run with confidence, knowing how to avoid injuries! |
