choice financial group stock: Corporate Payout Policy Harry DeAngelo, Linda DeAngelo, Douglas J. Skinner, 2009 Corporate Payout Policy synthesizes the academic research on payout policy and explains how much, when, and how. That is (i) the overall value of payouts over the life of the enterprise, (ii) the time profile of a firm's payouts across periods, and (iii) the form of those payouts. The authors conclude that today's theory does a good job of explaining the general features of corporate payout policies, but some important gaps remain. So while our emphasis is to clarify what we know about payout policy, the authors also identify a number of interesting unresolved questions for future research. Corporate Payout Policy discusses potential influences on corporate payout policy including managerial use of payouts to signal future earnings to outside investors, individuals' behavioral biases that lead to sentiment-based demands for distributions, the desire of large block stockholders to maintain corporate control, and personal tax incentives to defer payouts. The authors highlight four important carry-away points: the literature's focus on whether repurchases will (or should) drive out dividends is misplaced because it implicitly assumes that a single payout vehicle is optimal; extant empirical evidence is strongly incompatible with the notion that the primary purpose of dividends is to signal managers' views of future earnings to outside investors; over-confidence on the part of managers is potentially a first-order determinant of payout policy because it induces them to over-retain resources to invest in dubious projects and so behavioral biases may, in fact, turn out to be more important than agency costs in explaining why investors pressure firms to accelerate payouts; the influence of controlling stockholders on payout policy --- particularly in non-U.S. firms, where controlling stockholders are common --- is a promising area for future research. Corporate Payout Policy is required reading for both researchers and practitioners interested in understanding this central topic in corporate finance and governance. |

choice financial group stock: Plunkett's Investment & Securities Industry Almanac Jack W. Plunkett, 2008 The investment and securities industry is rebounding from the dismal markets of the early 2000s. Improved corporate profits, low interest rates and efforts to improve corporate governance have led the way, despite recent scandals in the mutual funds industry. Meanwhile, the investment industry is increasingly a global business. This is partly due to the needs of multinational corporations to list their stocks or issue debt in more than one nation. For example, ADRs (American Depository Receipts) are increasingly popular instruments. Cross-border investments and acquisitions continue at a rapid pace. Discount brokerages are enjoying improved levels of trading, while investment banks are developing new ways to create lucrative fees. This carefully-researched book (which includes a database of leading companies on CD-ROM) is a complete investments, securities and asset management market research and business intelligence tool -- everything you need to know about the business of investments, including: 1) Investment banking, 2) Stock brokers, 3) Discount brokers, 4) Online brokers, 5) Significant trends in financial information technologies, 6) Asset management, 7) Stock ownership by individuals and households, 8) 401(k)s and pension plans, 9) Mutual funds, 10) ETFs (Exchange traded funds), 11) ECNs (Electronic Communication Networks), 12) Developments at the NYSE and other exchanges. The book includes a complete chapter of vital industry statistics, an industry glossary, a complete list of industry contacts such as industry associations and government agencies, and our in-depth profiles of more than 300 leading firms in the investment and asset management business. A CD-ROM database of these firms is included with the book. |

choice financial group stock: Quit Annie Duke, 2022-10-04 From the bestselling author of Thinking in Bets comes a toolkit for mastering the skill of quitting to achieve greater success Business leaders, with millions of dollars down the drain, struggle to abandon a new app or product that just isn’t working. Governments, caught in a hopeless conflict, believe that the next tactic will finally be the one that wins the war. And in our own lives, we persist in relationships or careers that no longer serve us. Why? According to Annie Duke, in the face of tough decisions, we’re terrible quitters. And that is significantly holding us back. In Quit, Duke teaches you how to get good at quitting. Drawing on stories from elite athletes like Mount Everest climbers, founders of leading companies like Stewart Butterfield, the CEO of Slack, and top entertainers like Dave Chappelle, Duke explains why quitting is integral to success, as well as strategies for determining when to hold em, and when to fold em, that will save you time, energy, and money. You’ll learn: How the paradox of quitting influences decision making: If you quit on time, you will feel you quit early What forces work against good quitting behavior, such as escalation commitment, desire for certainty, and status quo bias How to think in expected value in order to make better decisions, as well as other best practices, such as increasing flexibility in goal-setting, establishing “quitting contracts,” anticipating optionality, and conducting premortems and backcasts Whether you’re facing a make-or-break business decision or life-altering personal choice, mastering the skill of quitting will help you make the best next move. |
