church history museum photos: The Earth Shall Teach Thee Boyd K. Packer, 2011 This book features paintings, drawings, and wood carvings representing a lifetime of work. As an avid lover of nature, Boyd K. Packer has carefully studied the appearance and habits of birds and animals and used them as his primary subjects. Above all, his art expresses reverence for life. Through artwork he has shared the lessons of life with his family and church members. President Packer wrote, During those hours working with my hands, I pondered on the marvels of creations, and inspiration would flow. As I carved wood, I carved out talks.--Publisher summary. |
church history museum photos: 50 Relics of the Restoration Mary Jane Woodger, Casey Paul Griffiths, 2020-11 We are witnesses to a process of restoration. If you think the Church has been fully restored, you're just seeing the beginning. There is much more to come. -Russell M. Nelson, news release, Oct. 30, 2018, Concepcion, Chile One of the most intriguing aspects of our Church's history is that it is still being discovered. Just as early Christians sought out pieces of the cross or searched for the location of Noah's Ark, it is natural for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to seek to interact with their history. The objects in this book constitute a glimpse at the richness of days gone by and allow us to see, heft, and handle those now-priceless objects that our forbearers did. In this volume, you will find photos and commentary on objects such as - The Brown Seer Stone - Liberty Jail's door - David Patten's rifle - Joseph Smith's handkerchief - James E. Talmage's Jesus the Christ manuscript - Joseph and Hyrum Smith's death masks - Hyrum Smith's Martyrdom Clothing - And much more! 50 Relics of the Restoration highlights the history of the Church through sacred objects gathered throughout its history. Included with the objects are some of the most vivid and interesting stories of the Latter-day Saints, which allow those who read them to interact with their beloved forbearers and become a part of their history. This unique volume of history highlights sacred objects from the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With pictures of each artifact, Griffiths and Woodger have written the history of the item and brought forth interesting stories of the Latter-day Saints. |

church history museum photos: Bavinck James Eglinton, 2020-09-29 Dutch Calvinist theologian Herman Bavinck, a significant voice in the development of Protestant theology, remains relevant many years after his death. His four-volume Reformed Dogmatics is one of the most important theological works of the twentieth century. James Eglinton is widely considered to be at the forefront of contemporary interest in Bavinck's life and thought. After spending considerable time in the Netherlands researching Bavinck, Eglinton brings to light a wealth of new insights and previously unpublished documents to offer a definitive biography of this renowned Reformed thinker. The book follows the course of Bavinck's life in a period of dramatic social change, identifying him as an orthodox Calvinist challenged with finding his feet in late modern culture. Based on extensive archival research, this critical biography presents numerous significant and previously ignored or unknown aspects of Bavinck's person and life story. A black-and-white photo insert is included. This volume complements other Baker Academic offerings on Bavinck's theology and ethics, which together have sold 90,000 copies. |

church history museum photos: The Laie Hawaii Temple Eric Marlowe, Clinton Christensen, 2019-11-07 The temple in Laie became the Church's fifth temple and the first functioning outside North America. It was one of the first to accommodate large numbers of patrons from different cultures speaking different languages. At the forefront of a Churchwide shift away from gathering that included immigration to the Intermountain West, the temple was among the first temples brought to the people. It was an early physical symbol of the audacity of a relatively young and provincial church to take the fullness of the gospel, realized only in temples, to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people (Revelation 14:6-7). The Laie temple played a role in spawning a university, BYU-Hawaii, and a world-class tourist attraction, the Polynesian Cultural Center. Over the years, the temple and nearby institutions have drawn millions of visitors, likely second in numbers only to historic Temple Square in Salt Lake City. |

church history museum photos: Kingdom of Nauvoo: The Rise and Fall of a Religious Empire on the American Frontier Benjamin E. Park, 2020-02-25 Best Book Award • Mormon History Association A brilliant young historian excavates the brief life of a lost Mormon city, uncovering a “grand, underappreciated saga in American history” (Wall Street Journal). In Kingdom of Nauvoo, Benjamin E. Park draws on newly available sources to re-create the founding and destruction of the Mormon city of Nauvoo. On the banks of the Mississippi in Illinois, the early Mormons built a religious utopia, establishing their own army and writing their own constitution. For those offenses and others—including the introduction of polygamy, which was bitterly opposed by Emma Smith, the iron-willed first wife of Joseph Smith—the surrounding population violently ejected the Mormons, sending them on their flight to Utah. Throughout his absorbing chronicle, Park shows how the Mormons of Nauvoo were representative of their era, and in doing so elevates Mormon history into the American mainstream. |

Utah and Mormon history are entwined, as so many early followers of the faith settled the region beginning in 1847. They preserved their values and heritage in the numerous temples, forts, tabernacles and cemeteries that serve as historic sacred monuments for the modern church. Author and LDS member Andy Weeks explores the history behind the landmarks that exalt the rich, deeply rooted history of Mormonism in the Beehive State. |

church history museum photos: A Mormon Murder - Jodi Arias and the Killing of Travis Alexander Pamela Lillian Valemont, 2013-09-29 The tragedy of Jodi Arias and Travis Alexander captured the imagination and riveted attention of viewers around the world. When the murder trial of beautiful Jodi Arias was televised and beamed internationally into foreign homes, the tragic story that unfolded of this fatally stricken young Mormon union is not something that history will quickly forget, nor will the cries from Arias supporters who believe her to have been over sentenced, be easily silenced. Despite changing the name to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1838, the killing of handsome Travis Alexander smacked and reverberated with similarity to the murders of atonement committed in those early times, a fact not overlooked by those familiar with the historic origins of the Mormon Church. Yet this similarity was never raised in court by either defense or prosecution. Since her conviction for murder in the first degree, Jodi Arias is serving out a natural life sentence at Perryville Prison, handed down by Judge Sherry Stephens. |

church history museum photos: Forgotten Voices Carolyn Wakeman, 2019-10-15 An inclusive early history of an iconic New England church The history inscribed in New England's meetinghouses waits to be told. There, colonists gathered for required worship on the Sabbath, for town meetings, and for court hearings. There, ministers and local officials, many of them slave owners, spoke about salvation, liberty, and justice. There, women before the Civil War found a role and a purpose outside their households. This innovative exploration of a coastal Connecticut town, birthplace of two governors and a Supreme Court Chief Justice, retrieves the voices preserved in record books and sermons and the intimate views conveyed in women's letters. Told through the words of those whose lives the meetinghouse shaped, Forgotten Voices uncovers a hidden past. It begins with the displacement of Indigenous people in the area before Europeans arrived, continues with disputes over worship and witchcraft in the early colonial settlement, and looks ahead to the use of Connecticut's most iconic white church as a refuge and sanctuary. Relying on the resources of local archives, the contents of family attics, and the extensive records of the Congregational Church, this community portrait details the long ignored genocide and enslaved people and reshapes prevailing ideas about history's makers. Meticulously researched and including 75 color illustrations, Forgotten Voices will be of interest to anyone exploring the roots of community life in New England. The book is the joint project of the Old Lyme meetinghouse and the Florence Griswold Museum. The museum will host a major exhibit in 20192020, exploring the role of the meetinghouse. |
