This book contains the proceedings of a conference intended to give a broad overview of the recent results obtained by recent AGN surveys over the whole electromagnetic spectrum. Topics which were discussed during the conference and are included in this volume are: AGN evolution, contribution to the cosmic background, AGN luminosity functions in different wavebands, multiwavelength properties of AGN, unified model and unconventional AGN, connection with the host galaxies, co-evolution of AGN and galaxies, implications for the local density of supermassive black holes. bloomberg center for physics and astronomy: Discovering the Cosmos with Small Spacecraft Brian Harvey, 2017-11-24 Explorer was the original American space program and Explorer 1 its first satellite, launched in 1958. Sixty years later, it is the longest continuously running space program in the world, demonstrating to the world how we can explore the cosmos with small spacecraft. Almost a hundred Explorers have already been launched. Explorers have made some of the fundamental discoveries of the Space Age. Explorer 1 discovered Earth’s radiation belts. Later Explorers surveyed the Sun, the X-ray and ultraviolet universes, black holes, magnetars and gamma ray bursts. An Explorer found the remnant of the Big Bang. One Explorer chased and was the first to intercept a comet. The program went through a period of few launches during the crisis of funding for space science in the 1980s. However, with the era of ‘faster, cheaper, better,’ the program was reinvented, and new exiting missions began to take shape, like Swift and the asteroid hunter WISE. Discovering the Cosmos with Small Spacecraft gives an account of each mission and its discoveries. It breaks down the program into its main periods of activity and examines the politics and debate on the role of small spacecraft in space science. It introduces the launchers (Juno, Thor, etc.), the launch centers, the ground centers and key personalities like James Van Allen who helped develop and run the spacecraft’s exciting programs. |

The Higgs boson appears as an excitation of the Higgs field, which permeates the vacuum. Several other phenomena in our Universe, such as dark energy, dark matter, and the abundance of matter over antimatter, remain unexplained. The Higgs field may prove to be the connection between our known world and the “dark” world, and studies of the Higgs boson's interactions are essential to reveal possible new phenomena. The unique feature of this work is simultaneous measurement of the Higgs boson’s associated production (its context, to use the language of the title) and its decay (its end), while allowing for multiple parameters sensitive to new phenomena. This includes computer simulation with Monte Carlo techniques of the complicated structure of the Higgs boson interactions, the matrix-element calculation of per-event likelihoods for optimal observables, and advanced fitting methods with hundreds of intricate components that cover all possible parameters and quantum mechanical interference. This culminates in the most advanced analysis of LHC data in the multi-parameter approach to Higgs physics in its single golden four-lepton decay channel to date. Optimization of the CMS detector’s silicon-based tracking system, essential for these measurements, is also described. |

Fascinating and comprehensive observational results as well as many important theoretical achievements were presented by more than 150 active researchers from more than 15 countries and regions. The conference started off with results from recent cutting-edge observations of the very high-redshift universe extending into the cosmic reionization era, together with some theoretical interpretations and predictions for the first generation of galaxies. The history of mass distributions and structure formation at later cosmic times, including clusters of galaxies, was discussed extensively in presentations based on various panoramic survey data sets. Our aim was to showcase and understand the intrinsic galaxy-formation bias in the high-redshift universe and also the role of external environmental effects during the hierarchical assembly of galaxies into denser regions. Various populations of distant galaxies at different redshifts, discovered and studies by many different techniques, were introduced along with the physical relationship between these populations. Our discussion were aimed at assembling these pieces of jigsaw puzzles together into a panoramic and yet detailed structures of the Milky Way Galaxy and the Local Group galaxies were also presented and discussed as a complementary approach to the studies of the high-redshift Universe. In total, 19 invited talks, 46 contributed talks, and 87 poster papers combined to build up a picture of the history of galaxies over the cosmic age. This book is suitable for researchers who are interested in both observational and theoretical aspects of galaxy formation and cosmology, and especially for students seeking an overview of knowledge about galaxy formation to date.--Publisher's website |
