citadel data open assessment: The Ivory Tower and the Marble Citadel Thomas A Metzger, 2012-11-19 The Ivory Tower and the Marble Citadel opens up a new way of pursuing the critical development of political philosophy in today's intercultural intellectual arena. Metzger holds that political philosophies are linguistically unavoidable efforts to infer the principles of morally legitimate government from a maximally enlightened conceptualization of the universal human condition. Because these efforts depend on a vocabulary embodying culturally inherited premises, textual analysis uncovering these premises and debate about how they should be revised are crucial for the improvement of political philosophy. |

citadel data open assessment: Environmental Impact IV J. Casares, G. Passerini, G. Perillo, 2018-10-23 Comprising a collection of papers from the 4th International Conference on Environmental and Economic Impact on Sustainable Development, the research studies included in this book consider the impact of economic constraints on the environment, taking into account the social aspects as well as the over-use of natural resources. The papers examine issues related to whether some forms of development are compatible with environmental protection, particularly in cases of possible serious contamination and toxicity. Uncontrolled development can result in damage to the environment in terms of the release of toxic substances and hazardous waste. Addressing problems of great importance, this book examines more constructive and progressive approaches to ensure sustainability. A major motivation is to learn from past failure, to avoid repeating similar mistakes, while attempting to prevent emerging threats to environmental and ecological systems. Fundamental to these concepts are the analysis of the inherent risk and the development of appropriate strategies. |

citadel data open assessment: Academic Library Makerspaces Katy B. Mathuews, Daniel J. Harper, 2020-06-29 Moving beyond simplistic equipment lists, this book provides contextual and practical information to help academic library personnel learn how to plan, collaborate, and sustain relevant makerspaces positioned within the broader ecology of campus innovation. The makerspace movement within academic libraries has largely focused on providing space and equipment for making. Academic libraries, however, have a unique opportunity to push beyond the 3D printer to create makerspaces that complement the broader ecology of innovation happening on campus. Intended for academic library personnel, this book is for those seeking guidance on how to establish a makerspace that is more than an equipment room. Katy Mathuews and Daniel Harper provide important context for the maker movement, a review of the process of making, and an overview of the various types of makerspaces, including the hub-and-spoke model, the centralized model, and the mobile makerspace. Additionally, the book provides practical steps to consider, including situating the academic library makerspace within the campus environment, creating valuable collaborations on campus, finding innovative ways to support the entire making process, programming, curriculum planning, and sustaining daily operations such as staffing, funding, and public service. |

citadel data open assessment: Conservation in Earthen Heritage Mariana Rita Alberto Rosado Correia, 2016-02-22 Worldwide, there is a vast but fragile earthen heritage that is barely surviving due to serious damage of the fabric. It is generally believed that natural agents are the overall cause for the decay of earthen heritage. However, when thoroughly evaluating, it can be observed that conservators’ interventions have a major impact, which leads to question current approaches to conservation and the reasons why intervention mistakes are repeated and why successful conservation results are still scarce. The research methodology of this investigation is based in a case study strategy analysing three World Heritage earthen sites, namely Chan Chan in Peru, Aït Ben Haddou in Morocco and Arg-e Bam in Iran. A combination of sources was also used, following a multi-method approach. This book suggests implementing standards for high quality intervention through the definition of criteria for decision-making and indicators of quality and best practice, as well as clarification concerning procedures in the methodology of intervention. It also stresses the importance of conservation theory in earthen heritage conservation, combining theory and practice. In addition, the book recommends an overall strategy in the conservation of earthen heritage, with particular emphasis on an approach that integrates education, awareness, research and preventive conservation. |

citadel data open assessment: Geotechnical Engineering for the Preservation of Monuments and Historic Sites Emilio Bilotta, Alessandro Flora, Stefania Lirer, Carlo Viggiani, 2013-05-10 All the traces of historic heritage are a fundamental part of our environment and reward us in the form of cultural enrichment, with the ability to have a positive effect both on our lifestyle and economy. Therefore, the preservation of ancient monuments, historic towns and sites has increasingly drawn the attention of public opinion, governmental agencies as well as consultants and contractors. This interest must be however carefully controlled and directed, since the conservation of monuments and historic sites is one of the most challenging problems of our age. Careless attempts at preservation can be detrimental not only to their iconic value (formal integrity), but even to their structural characteristics and the materials they are built with (material integrity). Geotechnical Engineering for the Preservation of Monuments and Historic Sites collects one opening address, four special lectures and 82 contributions from all over the world, giving a unique sample of the geotechnical problems to be tackled, the solutions currently being proposed, and the strategies being carried out to preserve the overall integrity of monuments and historic sites. It is clearly apparent that differences exist around the world not only in terms of the characteristics of the monuments or sites to be preserved, but also in the approaches adopted to achieve this aim. Hence, no unique solution is available to the geotechnical engineer dealing with the delicate structures and sites that represent our cultural heritage, and knowledge of previous experiences may be a unique guide in any technical decision-making process. |
citadel data open assessment: English in Medical Education Peih-ying Lu, John Corbett, 2012-08-13 This book addresses recent developments in medical and language education. In both fields, there have been methodological shifts towards 'task-based' and 'problem-based learning'. In addition, both fields have broadened their focus on clinical expertise and linguistic skills to address issues of cultural competence. English in Medical Education responds to these changes by re-imagining the language classroom in medical settings as an arena for the exploration of values and professional identity. The chapters cover topics such as the nature of cultural competence; how to understand spoken discourse in a range of medical settings; the use of tasks and problems in language education for medics; the development of critical skills and the use of literature and visual media in language education for doctors. It will interest everyone teaching English for Medical Purposes. |

Cynthia Clark, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, 2017-03-14 This highly anticipated, fully revised second edition revisits and augments the award-winning Creating & Sustaining Civility in Nursing Education. In this comprehensive new edition, author Cynthia Clark explores the problem of incivility within nursing academe and provides practical solutions that range from ready-to-use teaching tools to principles for broad-based institutional change. She further explores the costs and consequences of incivility, its link to stress, ways to identify the problem, and how to craft a vision for change – including bridging the gap between nursing education and practice. Rather than dwell on the negative, this book focuses on solutions, including role-modeling and mentoring, stress management, and positive learning environments. Nurse educators at all levels will appreciate the variety of evidence-based strategies that faculty – and students – can implement to promote and maintain civility and respect in the education setting, including online learning. |
