blu u light therapy: Photodynamic Therapy with ALA Reinhold Baumgartner, Barbara Krammer, Roy Pottier, Herbert Stepp, 2007-10-31 Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is increasingly being used amongst health practitioners in combating a variety of diseases. One common strategy used during this light activated process is to induce the accumulation of significant amounts of a photosensitising agent in the diseased tissue. The naturally occurring amino acid 5-aminovulinic acid (ALA) is used to produce high levels of the photosensitizer, Protoprophyin IX, in the therapy known as ALA-PDT. Written by experts in the field Photodynamic therapy with ALA outlines a variety of clinical approaches to the topic, outlining current applications. These include the use of ALA-PDT and ALA-FD (fluorescence diagnosis) in the areas of dermatology, urology, brain, otorhinolaryngology, gynaecology and gastroenterology. Also included is a chapter that comprehensively reviews the scientific principles of ALA-PDT. Primarily aimed at a clinical audience Photodynamic therapy with ALA should provide a comprehensive review and useful insight into ALA-PDT. |

blu u light therapy: Photodynamic Inactivation of Microbial Pathogens Michael R Hamblin, Giulio Jori, 2015-11-09 Photodynamic therapy (PDT) was discovered over one hundred years ago after observing the death of microorganisms upon exposure to dyes and light. It is the combination of non-toxic dyes and harmless visible light that, in the presence of oxygen, produce highly toxic reactive species. The principal medical application during the last century was in cancer therapy but, in these days of rising antibiotic resistance, PDT shows increasing promise as an alternative approach to treating infections. PDT has also been used in blood product sterilization, peridontology, acne reduction, and the treatment of viral lesions such as those caused by human papilloma virus. It may also have potential as an environmentally friendly pesticide. This is the first and only book to comprehensively cover the use of light and photosensitising agents for controlling microbial pathogens. It provides a comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of an emerging field. There are several chapters on the design of antimicrobial photosensitizers, their use to kill pathogenic organisms and their success in treating infections in animal models. It has long been known that gram-positive bacteria are highly susceptible to photoinactivation but the book also discusses means of widening the range of microorganisms that can be tackled by PDT. Edited by two pioneers in the application of PDT to medical and environmental issues, this book covers the basic science, translational research in animals, and the clinical applications in various medical specialities. It represents an indispensable resource for microbiologists and infectious disease doctors as well as dentists, dermatologists, gastroenterologists and transfusion specialists. |

blu u light therapy: Skin Cancer Management Deborah MacFarlane, 2010-03-11 The editor of Skin Cancer Management: A Practical Approach, Dr. Deborah MacFarlane, gathers experts in selected techniques related to the assessment and management of skin cancer and has them critically review the existing literature in light of their considerable experience delivering care. The authors make recommendations for the best way to perform procedures. The tables provided in each chapter then become a manual of how to perform these procedures, and may in time be adopted by the wider universe of dermatologists as the standard of performance. The detailed descriptions of technique and treatment pearls lead the novice through the sequence of events in a way that instills confidence in their ability to safely perform the procedure. An example of the painstaking expla- tions is found in Chapter 5, Intralesional and Perilesional Treatment of Skin Cancers. The reader is advised to place eye protection on the patient and those performing the injection of methotrexate into a keratoacanthoma with a central crust. Rest assured that there will be a spray or stream of methotrexate emitted from the crusted area. Having eye protection will prevent methotrexate from accidentally getting into someone’s eye. Since we all learn to assimilate new information by taking action on the recommendations that we read, it would be a good idea for the physician to create, where relevant, a checklist for each procedure in the text. The checklist can be given to the office staff to set up the equipment for the procedure. |

blu u light therapy: Photodynamic Therapy An Overview Of Fundamentals Functioning And Clinical Application In The Treatment Of Periodontal Disease Dr. Kunal Keshaw, 2023-03-25 Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the periodontium, which is initiated and propagated by bacteria. The main goal of nonsurgical periodontal therapy is to reduce pathogenic bacteria by scaling and root planing (SRP). However, there are some limitations to closed mechanical debridement such as presence of root curvatures, furcation involvement, and deep pocket. Also, patients having risks of systemic disease, hereditary factors, and smoking, which are accompanied by persistent infection with particular periodontal pathogenic bacteria, recolonization of the periodontal tissues by pathogens is common after treatment. These problems necessitate other protocols with the aim of potentiating the effects of mechanical therapy. Among these protocols, Photodynamic therapy (PDT) acts as an adjunctive approach to nonsurgical periodontal treatment in patients with periodontitis. PDT was first used in the treatment of neoplasms. It requires the use of a photosensitizing agent, which is activated by light to destroy bacteria and their by-products. Moreover, the PDT is also associated with risks and side effects related to light energy, photosensitizer, and related photochemical reaction. While using the lasers as the light source for the therapy, there are certain concerns that should be focused and rules that should be followed. |
