civil surgeon technical instructions: CDC Health Information for International Travel 2014 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013-04-22 Health risks are real and ever-changing, especially while traveling abroad. To stay abreast of the most up-to-date health recommendations, experienced travelers and health care professionals have always relied on CDC's user-friendly Health Information for International Travel (commonly known as the The Yellow Book) as their one indispensable guide. Updated biennially by a team of almost two hundred experts-including both CDC staff and travel medicine experts--this book is the only publication that contains all of the official government recommendations for international travel. Clearly written and featuring full-color illustrations, the book provides easy-to-read disease risk maps, information on where to find health care during travel, advice for those traveling with infants and children, a comprehensive catalog of diseases, and detailed country-specific health warnings. For example, the section on the Caribbean lays out the recommended immunizations and examines specific health risks for travelers to the region, ranging from malaria to dengue, yellow fever, and traveler's diarrhea. But the book goes beyond the risk of disease to discuss dangers such as violent crime-fortunately, not a great danger to tourists in the area-and also to remind travelers that the single greatest cause of injury death among visitors are traffic accidents. The section on the Caribbean also notes hurricane season and outlines the risks involved in snorkeling, diving, and other water activities common to the area. Every facet of the previous edition has been revisited and revised where necessary, including country-by-country immunization suggestions and new drug information. For the primary care clinician, the specialized travel medicine clinician, or the avid or first-time international traveler, this book is an indispensable safety net, providing readers with everything they need to know to prevent or to seek treatment for illness abroad. |
civil surgeon technical instructions: Mental Health Practitioner's Guide to HIV/AIDS Sana Loue, 2012-12-09 Although efforts have been made and continue to be made to reduce the rate of HIV transmission in the U.S. and globally, the rates continue to increase in the majority of countries. In the U.S., members of minority communities remain especially at risk of HIV transmission. An individual’s discovery that he or she has contracted HIV, or that a loved one has contracted the illness, often raises significant issues that necessitate interaction with mental health professionals. Mental Health Practitioner’s Guide to HIV/AIDS serves as a quick desk reference for professionals who may be less familiar with the terminology used in HIV/AIDS care and services. |

civil surgeon technical instructions: Refugee Health Care Aniyizhai Annamalai, 2014-03-19 Refugees arrive in the United States from different parts of the world and their numbers increase every year. Refugees undergo a medical screening soon after arrival, as recommended by the U.S. Department of State, and it is often primary care practitioners or psychiatrists who usually evaluate these patients at this first visit. Though physicians receive a variable amount of training in cross-cultural medicine, virtually none is in the area of refugee evaluations. Refugee evaluations are different from routine patient evaluations in several significant ways: 1) They are new immigrants from countries where the disease epidemiology is different from the U.S.; 2) Certain infectious disease processes need to be ruled out upon arrival to prevent the spread of communicable diseases; 3) The prevalence of mental health disorders in refugees is higher than the local population; 4) The medical and psychiatric health problems of refugees are often caused or affected by their past experience with trauma and their current acculturation difficulties; and 5) Significant cultural barriers can arise in the accurate evaluation and treatment of these refugees. Books on refugee health usually are written from ecological and public health perspectives and address generic refugee population issues. There are very few clinical textbooks, and most focus only on mental health. Refugee Health Care is a practical guide providing focused information for busy primary care practitioners, and many of the recommendations in the book apply to all immigrants. This concise pocketbook reviews medical and psychiatric conditions that are essential to know in the evaluation and treatment of refugees. |

civil surgeon technical instructions: Assessing Fitness for Military Enlistment National Research Council, Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences, Committee on the Youth Population and Military Recruitment: Physical, Medical, and Mental Health Standards, 2006-02-27 The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) faces short-term and long-term challenges in selecting and recruiting an enlisted force to meet personnel requirements associated with diverse and changing missions. The DoD has established standards for aptitudes/abilities, medical conditions, and physical fitness to be used in selecting recruits who are most likely to succeed in their jobs and complete the first term of service (generally 36 months). In 1999, the Committee on the Youth Population and Military Recruitment was established by the National Research Council (NRC) in response to a request from the DoD. One focus of the committee's work was to examine trends in the youth population relative to the needs of the military and the standards used to screen applicants to meet these needs. When the committee began its work in 1999, the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force had recently experienced recruiting shortfalls. By the early 2000s, all the Services were meeting their goals; however, in the first half of calendar year 2005, both the Army and the Marine Corps experienced recruiting difficulties and, in some months, shortfalls. When recruiting goals are not being met, scientific guidance is needed to inform policy decisions regarding the advisability of lowering standards and the impact of any change on training time and cost, job performance, attrition, and the health of the force. Assessing Fitness for Military Enlistment examines the current physical, medical, and mental health standards for military enlistment in light of (1) trends in the physical condition of the youth population; (2) medical advances for treating certain conditions, as well as knowledge of the typical course of chronic conditions as young people reach adulthood; (3) the role of basic training in physical conditioning; (4) the physical demands and working conditions of various jobs in today's military services; and (5) the measures that are used by the Services to characterize an individual's physical condition. The focus is on the enlistment of 18- to 24-year-olds and their first term of service. |

civil surgeon technical instructions: Immigration Matters Ruth Milkman, Deepak Bhargava, Penny Lewis, 2021-04-27 A provocative, strategic plan for a humane immigration system from the nation’s leading immigration scholars and activists During the past decade, right-wing nativists have stoked popular hostility to the nation’s foreign-born population, forcing the immigrant rights movement into a defensive posture. In the Trump years, preoccupied with crisis upon crisis, advocates had few opportunities to consider questions of long-term policy or future strategy. Now is the time for a reset. Immigration Matters offers a new, actionable vision for immigration policy. It brings together key movement leaders and academics to share cutting-edge approaches to the urgent issues facing the immigrant community, along with fresh solutions to vexing questions of so-called “future flows” that have bedeviled policy makers for decades. The book also explores the contributions of immigrants to the nation’s identity, its economy, and progressive movements for social change. Immigration Matters delves into a variety of topics including new ways to frame immigration issues, fresh thinking on key aspects of policy, challenges of integration, workers’ rights, family reunification, legalization, paths to citizenship, and humane enforcement. The perfect handbook for immigration activists, scholars, policy makers, and anyone who cares about one of the most contentious issues of our age, Immigration Matters makes accessible an immigration policy that both remediates the harm done to immigrant workers and communities under Trump and advances a bold new vision for the future. |
