clara barton physical therapy: I have Cancer But It Doesn't Have Me Lloyd Deitsch, 2012-04-27 My story really begins early in the fall of the year of 2003. I was starting to experience the loss of some of my strength. My left arm and leg to be exact. No real ache or pain. I had over extended the bottom of my left foot a couple of months ago. I was transferring a patient from his bed to his wheel chair at my work site. I was working as a medical assistant at a health care site. I was taken by fellow worker to a company doctor. He put me in a boot to support my weight, keeping off my foot. I missed a couple of weeks work. First work I had missed in three years. The foot seemed improved after a time. A short time later, my knee on both of my lets started giving me a whole lot of trouble. I was now having pain in both my legs and both of my knees. I began to think that maybe it was actually caused by the weather. The weather was starting to cool down. Fall and winter were approaching. I was beginning to slow down on my job. I was employed by Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation. The job of medical assistant requires that you are in good health. My leg and arm had gotten so bad I just couldn’t do my job as it should be done. |

clara barton physical therapy: Mark Twain and Medicine K. Patrick Ober, 2003 Mark Twain has always been America's spokesman, and his comments on a wide range of topics continue to be accurate, valid, and frequently amusing. His opinions on the medical field are no exception. While Twain's works, including his popular novels about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, are rich in medical imagery and medical themes derived from his personal experiences, his interactions with the medical profession and his comments about health, illness, and physicians have largely been overlooked. In Mark Twain and Medicine, K. Patrick Ober remedies this omission. The nineteenth century was a critical time in the development of American medicine, with much competition among the different systems of health care, both traditional and alternative. Not surprisingly, Mark Twain was right in the middle of it all. He experimented with many of the alternative care systems that were available in his day--in part because of his frustration with traditional medicine and in part because he hoped to find the perfect system that would bring health to his family. Twain's commentary provides a unique perspective on American medicine and the revolution in medical systems that he experienced firsthand. Ober explores Twain's personal perspective in this area, as he expressed it in fiction, speeches, and letters. As a medical educator, Ober explains in sufficient detail and with clarity all medical and scientific terms, making this volume accessible to the general reader. Ober demonstrates that many of Twain's observations are still relevant to today's health care issues, including the use of alternative or complementary medicine in dealing with illness, the utility of placebo therapies, and the role of hope in the healing process. Twain's evaluation of the medical practices of his era provides a fresh, humanistic, and personalized view of the dramatic changes that occurred in medicine through the nineteenth century and into the first decade of the twentieth. Twain scholars, general readers, and medical professionals will all find this unique look at his work appealing. |
clara barton physical therapy: The Last Children’s Plague Richard J. Altenbaugh, 2015-09-16 Poliomyelitis, better known as polio, thoroughly stumped the medical science community. Polio's impact remained highly visible and sometimes lingered, exacting a priceless physical toll on its young victims and their families as well as transforming their social worlds. This social history of infantile paralysis is plugged into the rich and dynamic developments of the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. Children became epidemic refugees because of anachronistic public health policies and practices. They entered the emerging, clinical world of the hospital, rupturing physical and emotional connections with their parents and siblings. As they underwent rehabilitation, they created ward cultures. They returned home to occasionally find hostile environments and always discover changed relationships due to their disabilities. The changing concept of the child, from an economic asset to an emotional commitment, medical advances, and improved sanitation policies led to significant improvements in child health and welfare. This study, relying on published autobiographies, memoirs, and oral histories, captures the impact of this disease on children's personal lives, encompassing public-health policies, hospitalization, philanthropic and organizational responses, physical therapy, family life, and schooling. It captures the anger, frustration, and terror not only among children but parents, neighbors, and medical professionals alike. |

clara barton physical therapy: Sister Kenny Victor Cohn, 1975 Sister Kenny was first published in 1976. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Sister Elizabeth Kenny, the Australian-born nurse, is remembered by thousands of grateful parents and grandparents of young polio patients, as well as others who were less personally affected, as the woman who successfully fought the medical profession to win acceptance of her techniques to combat the crippling effects of this disease. In this biography Victor Cohn, a prize-winning science writer, details the life of Sister Kenny and her significant role in the history of medicine. It is an inspiring story and one which will be of particular interest to those of the present generation who are engaged in the movement for women's equality. Sister Kenny's struggle against the bitter opposition of many doctors to her concepts for the treatment of polio dramatized the then common attitude of male chauvinism on the part of the medical profession toward nurses. The biography traces Sister Kenny's life from her birth in Australia, through her early nursing career in the bush, to her rise to prominence in America. Much of the narrative focuses on her confrontation with the medical establishment. Throughout, the author writes from an objective viewpoint, and in conclusion he assesses Sister Kenny's accomplishments. |

clara barton physical therapy: ¡Feminismo! Marifran Carlson, 2014-10-01 This book traces the Argentine Woman's movement and describes the individuals in its vanguard: women as different in personality and political orientation as the socialist activist Dr. Alicia Moreau de Justo, the international literary figure Victoria Ocampo and the legendary Eva PerÓn.The story begins with a background sketch of Argentine history, spanning four centuries from the conquistadores to the PerÓns. It describes the participation of upper class women in the country's philanthropic establishment thought the Beneficent Society, founded in the early nineteenth century; the development of the public education system- considered the best in Latin America- through the strong contribution of North American female teachers; and the influence of nineteenth century free thought and socialism upon woman's movement. Despite the broadening of education and the positive effect of European immigration upon Argentine institutions, it was not until the middle of the twentieth century that woman suffrage was finally achieved—by a bizarre twist of fate through the efforts of the PerÓn regime, and to the outrage and consternation of most Argentine feminists. |
