Oae, 2012-12-06 In recent years organic sulfur chemistry has been growing at an even faster pace than the very rapid development in other fields of chemistry. This phenomenal growth is undoubtedly a reflection of industrial and public demands: not only was sulfur recently in overall surplus for the first time in the history of the chemical industry but it has now become a prin cipal environmental hazard in the form of sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid and hydrogen sulfide. Another reason, discernible in the last fifteen years, has been the desire, on the part of individual chemists and all types of research managers, to move away from the established chemistry of carbon into the less well understood and sometimes virgin chemistries of the other elements which form covalent bonds. As a result of this movement the last decade has seen the development of sulfur chemistry into a well-organized and now much better understood branch of organic chemistry. Enough of the detail has become clear to see mechanistic interrelationships between previously unconnected reactions and with this clarification the whole subject has in tum become systema tized and subdivided. The divalent sulfur chemistry of thiols, monosulfides, disulfides and polysulfides is a large area in itself, much of it devoted to oxidation-reduction and the breakage and formation of sulfur-sulfur bonds, although interesting discoveries are now being made about the reac tivity of certain sulfur-carbon bonds. Of course, this area has its own mas sive biochemical branch involving enzymes and proteins. |

Brown, 1961 and 1966) and from the experiences of all three of us teaching a first-year university course in valency at Monash University. Our object has been to give enough of an historical introduction to quantum mechanics to enable a student to grasp the fundamental ideas without being subjected to much mathematical formalism. We have also tried to avoid making erroneous statements in the interest of simplicity (e. g the widespread tendency to ignore the difference between 2Pl, 2po, 2p-l and 2px, 2py, 2p z) because these lead to irritation and confusion of the better students, when they proceed to further studies of chemical quantum mechanics. The topics we have chosen to expand upon-i. e. , energy levels of electrons in atoms, energetic considerations of bonding in diatomic molecules, and packing of ions in the simplest solid state structures we believe form a good basis for students to progress to more complicated systems in a qualitative way. Two detailed case studies that examine fate and transport of organic contaminants (VOCs, PFCs), with data and interpretations presented separately. These examples consider the chemical and mineralogical composition of rocks, soils and waters in the affected system; microbial influence on the decomposition of organic compounds; the effect of reduction-oxidation on transport of Fe, As and Mn; stable isotopes and synthetic compounds as tracers of flow; geological factors that influence flow; and implications for remediation. The interdisciplinary approach and range of topics – including environmental contamination of air, water and soil as well as the processes that affect both natural and anthropogenic systems – make it well-suited for environmental geochemistry courses at universities as well as liberal arts colleges. |
