Ladd, 2008-06 Fifty years after James Bruce brought a copy of the Book of Enoch, found in Ethiopia, to England, Richard Laurence made a first modern translation. Later, R.H. Charles made another translation using some Greek excerpts, and more Ethiopian texts. Then recently, Michael A Knibb, using many texts, and partial texts, put together an ?adequate' translation. Yet, all of these translations are rough, obscure, and confusing to Christians of today. The Dead Sea Scrolls contained many copies and partial copies of the Book of Enoch, In the Dead Sea scrolls, there were found 17 copies. Comparitively, there were 30 copies of Psalms, 25 copies of Deuteronomy, 19 of Isaiah, 15 of Genesis and Exodus, 14 Of Jubilees. Jude validated The Book Of Enoch with his quote from it. Using all of the sources now available, along with an in-depth study of book, I have prepared this paraphrase/translation. Along with such, I have included an commentary to help in its comparison with the Bible. John D. Ladd was raised the son of an Assemblies of God pastor. He attended Northeast Bible College, in Pennsylvania, and later, Malone College, in Canton, Ohio. He pastored for many years, was ordained in the Assemblies of God, but later left to pastor independent churches. Preferring teaching to preaching, he has spent many years studying, reading books from the early church period, and translating\paraphrasing them for ease of use by Christians of today. This book of Enoch's has been translated, paraphrased, and now is being given commentary, to compare it with the Bible's message, to test it by the Word of God. How does it compare? Chapters 1-36 tell the story of the descent of angels called Watchers from heaven to earth to marry human women before the time of the flood, the chaos that ensued, and God's response. They also relate the journeying of the righteous scribe Enoch through the cosmos, guided by angels. Heaven, including the place and those who dwell there (God, the angels, and Enoch), plays a central role in the narrative. But how should heaven be understood? Existing scholarship, which presupposes Judaism as the appropriate framework, views the Enochic heaven as reflecting the temple in Jerusalem, with God's house replicating its architecture and the angels and Enoch functioning like priests. Yet recent research shows the Judeans constituted an ethnic group, and this view encourages a fresh examination of 1 Enoch 1-36. The actual model for heaven proves to be a king in his court surrounded by his courtiers. The major textual features are explicable in this perspective, whereas the temple-and-priests model is unconvincing. The author was a member of a nontemple, scribal group in Judea that possessed distinctive astronomical knowledge, promoted Enoch as its exemplar, and was involved in the wider sociopolitical world of their time. |

| book of enoch bible study: The Book of Jubilees Robert Henry Charles, 2024-05-21 The Book of Jubilees or as it is sometimes called the little Genesis purports to be a revelation given by God to Moses through the medium of an angel and containing a history divided up into jubilee-periods of forty-nine years from the creation to the coming of Moses. Though the actual narrative of events is only carried down to the birth and early career of Moses its author envisages the events of a later time and in particular certain events of special interest at the time when he wrote which was probably in the latter years of the second century B.C. perhaps in the reign of the Maccabean prince John Hyrcanus. Though distinguished from the Pentateuch proper it presupposes and supplements the latter. The actual narrative embraces material contained in the whole of Genesis and part of Exodus. But the legal regulations given presuppose other parts of the Pentateuch especially the so-called Priest's Code and certain details in the narrative are probably intended to apply to events that occurred in the author's own time the latter years of the second century B.C. The author himself seems to have contemplated the speedy inauguration of the Messianic Age and in this respect his point of view is similar to that of the Apocalyptic writers. But his work though it contains one or two passages of an apocalyptic character is quite unlike the typical apocalypses. It is largely narrative based upon the historical narratives in Genesis and Exodus interspersed with legends and emphasizing certain legal practices. But his main object was to inculcate a reform in the regulation of the calendar and festivals in place of the intercalated lunar calendar which he condemns in the strongest language.
