Today, ICT lies at the heart of policy-making in education. This change in attitude forms the basis of this fully up-dated second edition. |

clip art education images: Make Me a Story Lisa Miller, 2023-11-22 When teachers and students first learn about digital stories, they often focus on the bells and whistles: images, music, sound effects, and so on. To Lisa Miller, a good digital story -- like any good story -- is all about the writing. In Make Me a Story, Lisa shows how to use digital stories to lead students through all phases of the writing process, from planning to revising and editing. Digital storytelling uses computers and software to marry text with art -- photographs, drawings, paintings, and video -- as well as narration and music. Lisa leads teachers step-by-step through the process of writing a digital story in an accessible (even for the computer neophyte), instructional, and entertaining way. Through the projects outlined in the book, students learn how to write good stories, make art and text work together, and use technology in creative ways. Make Me a Story discusses different types of digital stories, shows how to assess digital assignments and motivate reluctant writers, and explains how digital storytelling teaches skills supported by national education and technology standards. Teachers will find specific suggestions for writing exercises and various ways to get students thinking about how best to tell their stories. The accompanying CD includes examples of student stories discussed in the text. |

clip art education images: African American Males in School and Society Vernon C. Polite, James Earl Davis, 1999-10 In this groundbreaking and timely volume Vernon Polite and James Davis have brought together the perspectives and research findings of eminent scholars who study the educational and social lives of African American males. The result is a volume that brims with new outlooks and viewpoints, a refreshing departure from pervasive and oftentimes stereotypical literature about the African American male experience, and gives the reader access to prevalent issues affecting this population today. Thoughtful attention is paid to broader outcomes such as educational attainment, job procurement, and quality of life. These topics are discussed against the backdrop of student background and schooling with an overall aim to improve the academic and social outcomes of this population . Chapters range from explorations into identifying giftedness and responsive teaching styles, to educating African American males in the suburbs. The contributors to this volume offer differing methodologies and foci to document how the social and educational worlds of African American males cross, and the editors suggest policy implications that derive from these studies. This eloquent, engaging, and accessible volume has much to offer its readers and is especially important to people concerned with the well-being of African American boys and men. |

clip art education images: New Research on Early Childhood Education Arthur T. Waddell, Rachel M. McBride, 2008 Early Childhood Education spans the human life from birth to age 8. Infants and toddlers experience life more holistically than any other age group. Social, emotional, cognitive, language, and physical lessons are not learned separately by very young children. Adults who are most helpful to young children interact in ways that understand that the child is learning from the whole experience, not just that part of the experience to which the adult gives attention. Although early childhood education does not have to occur in the absence of the parent or primary caregiver, this term is sometimes used to denote education by someone other than these the parent or primary caregiver. Both research in the field and early childhood educators view the parents as an integral part of the early childhood education process. Early childhood education takes many forms depending on the theoretical and educational beliefs of the educator or parent. Other terms those are often used interchangeably with early childhood education are early childhood learning, early care and early education. Much of the first two years of life are spent in the creation of a child's first sense of self or the building of a first identity. Because this is a crucial part of children's makeup-how they first see themselves, how they think they should function, how they expect others to function in relation to them, early care must ensure that in addition to carefully selected and trained caregivers, links with family, home culture, and home language are a central part of program policy. If care becomes a substitute for, rather than a support of, family, children may develop a less-than-positive sense of who they are and where they come from because of their child care experience. This book presents the latest research in this vital field. |
