boston private financial holdings: Silicon Valley Bank Xuan-Thao Nguyen, 2024-02-15 This book provides a first-hand account of the founding, ascent, and dissolution of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), a tech community bank founded in 1982 with US$5 million that became the nation's 13th largest bank and tech industry's lender and bank. In this pathbreaking work, which challenges conventional understanding of risky tech lending by showing how an independent community bank became the go-to bank for the tech industry in the United States, Xuan-Thao Nguyen includes interviews with key players, ranging from the original founders and early employees to the current CEO of SVB. Chapters explore how the relationship between the venture capital (VC) industry and SVB transformed the way commercial banks comply with banking regulators while lending and nurturing young tech clients. The book demonstrates why the relationships between investors, start-ups, bankers, lenders, experts, lawyers, regulators, and community leaders are key ingredients for ongoing innovation in the tech industry. The book concludes with the sobering dissection of SVB's sudden death by $142 billion cuts inflicted by tech bros, social media, and the Federal Reserve Bank's successive interest rate hikes to squash the overheated economy. |

boston private financial holdings: Charles McKay, 2010-01 This book gives strategies to become most profitable as a real estate investor in the bank bailout era and beyond. New real estate investment trends have resulted from the United States bank bailout. This book reveals the details of what occurred in real estate, banking, and investment markets, and what caused the troubled economy. It will give you options to be more successful as a real estate investor by negotiating the best deal by determining the property's actual worth. It discusses what property is affordable, sources of getting more for the down payment, property markets, and strategies for real estate investing. There follows a view of sales transactions, comparing deals, and how to save money in refinancing. Second it considers the benefit of investing partners, comparing real estate deals, financing methods, and the worth of lease income. Next, the book discusses unique methods to save money, cost cutting, and maximize cash flow. What should real estate investors do about green and cleaner energy? The book considers the historical bank bailout of the United States, the TARP, and evidence of what happened: the practices that led up to real estate exuberance, the new direction and state of affairs needed in the real estate and banking markets, the options for troubled mortgage holders who face foreclosure, and exit strategy options. The book covers a software program that I invented called Leverage for Real Estate, an investment forecasting package sold by Glacier Concept. The software allows the user to value a property in less than a half hour where it would take an appraiser a couple of days. It's a real estate investment banker wrapped up in software. It covers modeling your real estate deal's worth. The software is great for beginners and is as easy to use as a video game. Charles McKay is a graduate of both M.I.T. and Brown University. |

boston private financial holdings: TARP and other Bank Bailouts and Bail-Ins around the World Allen N. Berger, Raluca A. Roman, 2020-06-09 Financial crises are recurring phenomena that result in the financial distress of systemically important banks, making it imperative to understand how to best respond to such crises and their consequences. Two policy responses became prominent for dealing with these distressed institutions since the last Global Financial Crisis: bailouts and bail-ins. The main questions surrounding these responses touch everyone: Are bailouts or bail-ins good for the financial system and the real economy? Is it essential to save distressed financial institutions by putting taxpayer money at risk in bailouts, or is it better to use private money in bail-ins instead? Are there better options, such as first lines of defense that help prevent such distress in the first place? Can countercyclical prudential and monetary policies lessen the likelihood and severity of the financial crises that often bring about this distress? Through careful analysis, authors Berger and Roman review and critically assess the extant theoretical and empirical research on many resolution approaches and tools. Placing special emphasis on lessons learned from one of the biggest bailouts of all time, the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), while also reviewing other programs and tools, TARP and Other Bank Bailouts and Bail-Ins around the World sheds light on how best to protect the financial system on Wall Street and the real economy on Main Street. - Presents a well-informed and rich account of bailouts, bail-ins, and other resolution approaches to resolve financially distressed banks. - Uses TARP as a key case study of bailouts that has been thoroughly researched. - Provides valuable research and policy guidance for dealing with future financial crises. |
boston private financial holdings: Encyclopedia of White-Collar and Corporate Crime Lawrence M. Salinger, 2013-06-14 Since the first edition of the Encyclopedia of White Collar and Corporate Crime was produced in 2004, the number and severity of these crimes have risen to the level of calamity, so much so that many experts attribute the near-Depression of 2008 to white-collar malfeasance, namely crimes of greed and excess by bankers and financial institutions. Whether the perpetrators were prosecuted or not, white-collar and corporate crime came near to collapsing the U.S. economy. In the 7 years since the first edition was produced we have also seen the largest Ponzi scheme in history (Maddoff), an ecological disaster caused by British Petroleum and its subcontractors (Gulf Oil Spill), and U.S. Defense Department contractors operating like vigilantes in Iraq (Blackwater). White-collar criminals have been busy, and the Second Edition of this encyclopedia captures what has been going on in the news and behind the scenes with new articles and updates to past articles. |

boston private financial holdings: Systemic Risk: Measures and Determinants María Rodríguez-Moreno, 2016-01-08 This book studies the measurement and the determinants of systemic risk, paying special attention to the role of the Credit Default Swaps (CDSs) either as financial instruments containing valuable information about the soundness of the reference institutions or as a market whose distress contributes to potential systemic shocks on the economy. The measurement of systemic risk is addressed from two perspectives, aggregate and individual contribution to systemic risk where the former refers to the level of systemic risk in the overall economy and the latter to the individual contribution of each financial institution to the overall systemic risk. The analysis of the determinants of the individual contribution of financial institutions to systemic risk focuses on the effect of their portfolio holdings of derivatives. Finally, this thesis studies the liquidity commonalities and their determinants in the corporate CDS worldwide markets. The main participants in these markets are systemically important financial institutions (SIFIs) and so abrupt changes in the market liquidity could cause systemic shocks on the overall economy and, as a consequence, could have adverse effects on global stability. |

boston private financial holdings: Theft of a Nation Gregg Barak, 2012-08-02 Theft of a Nation presents a powerful criminological examination of Wall Street’s recent financial meltdown and its profound impact on the rest of the country. This provocative book asks why, if the actions of key players on Wall Street and in the government resulted in an economic downturn that harmed millions of Americans and destroyed capital worldwide, no one was held criminally liable for these actions. Author Gregg Barak provides a basic history of financial regulation and deregulation, as well as a primer on both securities fraud and mass victimization. Using key concepts in victimology and white collar crime, he explores the diverse ways civil and criminal law enforcement responded to the damaging behavior on Wall Street. The book also assesses Wall Street Financial Reform and the Consumer Protection Act of 2010, showing the ways that Americans may still be at risk. Theft of a Nation is the first comprehensive criminological investigation of the role of Wall Street and the government in the recent financial crisis, asking critical questions about who has been victimized and why. |
