boston private financial holdings inc: Silicon Valley Bank Xuan-Thao Nguyen, 2024-02-15 This book provides a first-hand account of the founding, ascent, and dissolution of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), a tech community bank founded in 1982 with US$5 million that became the nation's 13th largest bank and tech industry's lender and bank. In this pathbreaking work, which challenges conventional understanding of risky tech lending by showing how an independent community bank became the go-to bank for the tech industry in the United States, Xuan-Thao Nguyen includes interviews with key players, ranging from the original founders and early employees to the current CEO of SVB. Chapters explore how the relationship between the venture capital (VC) industry and SVB transformed the way commercial banks comply with banking regulators while lending and nurturing young tech clients. The book demonstrates why the relationships between investors, start-ups, bankers, lenders, experts, lawyers, regulators, and community leaders are key ingredients for ongoing innovation in the tech industry. The book concludes with the sobering dissection of SVB's sudden death by $142 billion cuts inflicted by tech bros, social media, and the Federal Reserve Bank's successive interest rate hikes to squash the overheated economy.
boston private financial holdings inc: Charles McKay, 2010-01 This book gives strategies to become most profitable as a real estate investor in the bank bailout era and beyond. New real estate investment trends have resulted from the United States bank bailout. This book reveals the details of what occurred in real estate, banking, and investment markets, and what caused the troubled economy. It will give you options to be more successful as a real estate investor by negotiating the best deal by determining the property's actual worth. It discusses what property is affordable, sources of getting more for the down payment, property markets, and strategies for real estate investing. There follows a view of sales transactions, comparing deals, and how to save money in refinancing. Second it considers the benefit of investing partners, comparing real estate deals, financing methods, and the worth of lease income. Next, the book discusses unique methods to save money, cost cutting, and maximize cash flow. What should real estate investors do about green and cleaner energy? The book considers the historical bank bailout of the United States, the TARP, and evidence of what happened: the practices that led up to real estate exuberance, the new direction and state of affairs needed in the real estate and banking markets, the options for troubled mortgage holders who face foreclosure, and exit strategy options. The book covers a software program that I invented called Leverage for Real Estate, an investment forecasting package sold by Glacier Concept. The software allows the user to value a property in less than a half hour where it would take an appraiser a couple of days. It's a real estate investment banker wrapped up in software. It covers modeling your real estate deal's worth. The software is great for beginners and is as easy to use as a video game. Charles McKay is a graduate of both M.I.T. and Brown University.

We first apply spatial-dependence methods to filter the effects of strong common factors and a thresholding procedure to select the significant bilateral correlations. The analysis of topological characteristics of the resulting correlation networks shows many common features that have been documented in the recent literature but were obtained with private information on banks' exposures, including rich and hierarchical structures, based on but not limited to geographical proximity, small world features, regional homophily, and a core-periphery structure.

boston private financial holdings inc: The Wealth Effects of OCC Preemption Announcements After the Passage of the Georgia Fair Lending Act Gary Whalen, 2004 Rapid growth in subprime lending over the past decade has led to rising concerns about abusive practices by subprime lenders. By early 2004, those concerns prompted Georgia and more than 30 other states to pass laws designed to eliminate abusive or predatory lending practices by the financial services firms, including those with federal charters, operating within their boundaries. In 2003, the OCC concluded that federal law preempts the provisions of the Georgia Fair Lending Act (GFLA) that would otherwise affect national banks' real estate lending. In early 2004, the OCC adopted a final rule providing that state laws that regulate the terms of credit are preempted. The OCC has asserted that the growing number of state anti-predatory lending laws impose substantial compliance costs on banks, especially smaller, multistate banking organizations that must spread them over smaller levels of output. If these arguments are correct, preemption should reduce expected costs, increase expected revenue, and boost expected bank profitability, especially for smaller banking firms with multistate operations. Opponents of preemption have argued that material preemption benefits for national banks imply a significant competitive disadvantage for state banks and could induce enough state bank charter conversions to endanger the dual banking system.

To do this work, the auditor reviewed signed agreements and other relevant documentation and met with officials from OFS, contractors, federal agencies, and some participating institutions.   boston private financial holdings inc: TARP and other Bank Bailouts and Bail-Ins around the World Allen N. Berger, Raluca A. Roman, 2020-06-09 Financial crises are recurring phenomena that result in the financial distress of systemically important banks, making it imperative to understand how to best respond to such crises and their consequences. Two policy responses became prominent for dealing with these distressed institutions since the last Global Financial Crisis: bailouts and bail-ins. The main questions surrounding these responses touch everyone: Are bailouts or bail-ins good for the financial system and the real economy? Is it essential to save distressed financial institutions by putting taxpayer money at risk in bailouts, or is it better to use private money in bail-ins instead? Are there better options, such as first lines of defense that help prevent such distress in the first place? Can countercyclical prudential and monetary policies lessen the likelihood and severity of the financial crises that often bring about this distress? Through careful analysis, authors Berger and Roman review and critically assess the extant theoretical and empirical research on many resolution approaches and tools. Placing special emphasis on lessons learned from one of the biggest bailouts of all time, the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), while also reviewing other programs and tools, TARP and Other Bank Bailouts and Bail-Ins around the World sheds light on how best to protect the financial system on Wall Street and the real economy on Main Street. - Presents a well-informed and rich account of bailouts, bail-ins, and other resolution approaches to resolve financially distressed banks. - Uses TARP as a key case study of bailouts that has been thoroughly researched. - Provides valuable research and policy guidance for dealing with future financial crises.

boston private financial holdings inc: Financial Crisis, Corporate Governance, and Bank Capital Sanjai Bhagat, 2017-03-10 In the aftermath of the 2007–8 crisis, senior policymakers and the media have blamed excessive risk-taking undertaken by bank executives, in response to their compensation incentives, for the crisis. The inevitable follow-up to this was to introduce stronger financial regulation, in the hope that better and more ethical behaviour can be induced. Despite the honourable intentions of regulation, such as the Dodd–Frank Act of 2010, it is clear that many big banks are still deemed too big to fail. This book argues that by restructuring executive incentive programmes to include only restricted stock and restricted stock options with very long vesting periods, and financing banks with considerably more equity, the potential of future financial crises can be minimized. It will be of great value to corporate executives, corporate board members, institutional investors and economic policymakers, as well as graduate and undergraduate students studying finance, economics and law.
