cody's guide service: The Medal of Honor Dwight S. Mears, 2018-08-22 The Medal of Honor may be America’s highest military decoration, but all Medals of Honor are not created equal. The medal has in fact consisted of several distinct decorations at various times and has involved a number of competing statutes and policies that rewarded different types of heroism. In this book, the first comprehensive look at the medal’s historical, legal, and policy underpinnings, Dwight S. Mears charts the complex evolution of these developments and differences over time. The Medal of Honor has had different qualification thresholds at different times, and indeed three separate versions—one for the army and two for the navy—existed contemporaneously between World Wars I and II. Mears traces these versions back to the medal’s inception during the Civil War and continues through the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—along the way describing representative medal actions for all major conflicts and services as well as legislative and policy changes contemporary to each period. He gives particular attention to retroactive army awards for the Civil War; World War I legislation that modernized and expanded the army’s statutory award authorization; the navy’s grappling with both a combat and noncombat Medal of Honor through much of the twentieth century; the Vietnam-era act that ended noncombat awards and largely standardized the Medal of Honor among all services; and the perceived decline of Medals of Honor awarded in the ongoing Global War on Terror. Mears also explores the tradition of awards via legislative bills of relief; extralegislative awards; administrative routes to awards through Boards of Correction of Military Records; restoration of awards previously revoked by the army in 1917; judicial review of military actions in federal court; and legislative actions intended to atone for historical discrimination against ethnic minorities. Unprecedented in scope and depth, his work is sure to be the definitive resource on America’s highest military honor. |

cody's guide service: William F. Cody's Wyoming Empire Robert E. Bonner, 2016-01-29 Celebrated showman of the Old West, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody took on another role unknown to most Americans, that of the western land developer and town promoter. In this captivating study, Robert E. Bonner demonstrates that the skills Cody acquired from decades in show business failed to prepare him for the demanding arena of business and finance. Bonner examines Cody’s efforts as president of the Shoshone Irrigation Company to develop the Big Horn Basin through large-scale irrigation and town development. This meticulously researched account shows us a Buffalo Bill preoccupied with making a buck and not at all shy about using his fame to do it. Cody spent huge sums, bullied partners, patronized state officials, and exercised his charm in pursuit of developing the high plains east of Yellowstone National Park. His efforts helped shape the city of Cody and the Big Horn Basin. With the famous Irma Hotel as a cornerstone, he built the first infrastructure of the Cody-Yellowstone tourist trade and connected his little Wyoming town with the wealth of the East through personal hospitality and travel. Laced with engaging anecdotes and featuring more than twenty photographs, William F. Cody’s Wyoming Empire is a much needed look at an overly mythologized character. There was more to William F. Cody than the Wild West show—and we cannot construct a full picture of the man without understanding his entrepreneurial activities in Wyoming. |
cody's guide service: Tying Euro Nymphs and Other Competition Favorites Tim Cammisa, 2025-01-14 Perhaps no other area in fly fishing has experienced as much sensation, and growth, as “Euro Nymphing.” This term, which is actually not the most accurate but has been the one that has stuck, describes a broad category of nymphing (fishing flies under the water as opposed to on top of the water) techniques from around the world—Czech, Polish, Spanish, French, as well as American—brought to the forefront by the rise of fly fishing competitions. This pioneering fly tying book focuses on teaching the most popular patterns in this category and includes approximately 15 flies with over 350 full-color tying steps. |

cody's guide service: Colorado Frontiersmen: Forts, Fights and Legacies Linda Wommack, 2023-06 Early Icons and Landmarks As western migration came to the Colorado frontier, forts were established to protect the settlers. These forts were intertwined with the lives of the frontiersmen. Scout Thomas Tate Tobin oversaw the workers who built the adobe fortress known as Fort Garland. Here, Tobin delivered the heads of the murderous Espinosas gang to Colonel Sam Tappan. Fort Sedgwick, originally known as Camp Rankin, was attacked by the Cheyenne Dog soldiers, including George Bent. Fort Lyon, an expanded fortress of William Bent's third fort, became the staging point for Colonel John M. Chivington's march to Sand Creek where peaceful Cheyenne were murdered. Later, Christopher Kit Carson died in the fort's chapel. Legendary Jim Beckwourth was associated with both Fort Vasquez and Fort Pueblo. Author Linda Wommack revisits the glory and the mistakes of the frontiersmen who defined Colorado and the forts that dotted the wild landscape. |

cody's guide service: Last of the Great Scouts: The Life Story of William F. Cody - "Buffalo Bill" Helen Cody Wetmore, 2021-05-10 Last of the Great Scouts is a biography of William F. Cody a.k.a Buffalo Bill, written by his sister Helen Cody Wetmore. Buffalo Bill was of the most famous and well-known figures of the American Old West. His legend began to spread when he was only 23. Shortly thereafter he started performing in shows that displayed cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier and Indian Wars. In authors words the reason for writing this biography were twofold. Primarily, her intention was to provide an authentic biography of her brother in response to many books of varying value that have been published. The second reason was purely personal. Helen wanted to share with readers who Bill was personally and to present his true personality. _x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ The Old Homestead in Iowa_x000D_ Will's First Indian_x000D_ The Shadow of Partisan Strife_x000D_ Persecution Continues_x000D_ The Boy Extra_x000D_ Family Defender and Household Tease_x000D_ Indian Encounter and School-day Incidents_x000D_ Death and Burial of Turk_x000D_ Will as Pony Express Rider_x000D_ Echoes From Sumter_x000D_ A Short but Dashing Indian Campaign_x000D_ The Mother's Last Illness_x000D_ In the Secret-service_x000D_ Will as a Benedict_x000D_ How the Sobriquet of Buffalo Bill Was Won_x000D_ Satanta, Chief of the Kiowas_x000D_ Will Made Chief of Scouts_x000D_ Army Life at Fort M'pherson_x000D_ Pa-has-ka, the Long-haired Chief_x000D_ The Hunt of the Grand Duke Alexis_x000D_ Theatrical Experiences_x000D_ The Government's Indian Policy_x000D_ Literary Work_x000D_ First Visit to the Valley of the Big Horn_x000D_ Tour of Great Britain_x000D_ Return of the Wild West to America_x000D_ A Tribute to General Miles_x000D_ The Wild West at the World's Fair_x000D_ Cody Day at the Omaha Exposition_x000D_ The Last of the Great Scouts |
