The book is aimed at physicists and engineers with some ba- ground in numerical linear algebra and matrix computations. Although there are many practical details in this book, for a robust and ef?cient implementation of all numerical algorithms, the reader should consult the literature cited. The data model adopted in our analysis is semi-stochastic. From a practical point of view, there are no signi?cant differences between a semi-stochastic and a determin- tic framework; the differences are relevant from a theoretical point of view, e.g., in the convergence and convergence rates analysis. After an introductory chapter providing the state of the art in passive atmospheric remote sensing, Chapter 2 introduces the concept of ill-posedness for linear discrete eq- tions. To illustrate the dif?culties associated with the solution of discrete ill-posed pr- lems, we consider the temperature retrieval by nadir sounding and analyze the solvability of the discrete equation by using the singular value decomposition of the forward model matrix. |

Further, it provides algorithmic methods for the construction of dual and tight wavelet frames with a desirable approximation order, namely compactly supported wavelet frames, which are commonly required by engineers. It particularly focuses on methods of constructing them. Wavelet bases and frames are actively used in numerous applications such as audio and graphic signal processing, compression and transmission of information. They are especially useful in image recovery from incomplete observed data due to the redundancy of frame systems. The construction of multivariate wavelet frames, especially bases, with desirable properties remains a challenging problem as although a general scheme of construction is well known, its practical implementation in the multidimensional setting is difficult. Another important feature of wavelet is symmetry. Different kinds of wavelet symmetry are required in various applications, since they preserve linear phase properties and also allow symmetric boundary conditions in wavelet algorithms, which normally deliver better performance. The authors discuss how to provide H-symmetry, where H is an arbitrary symmetry group, for wavelet bases and frames. The book also studies so-called frame-like wavelet systems, which preserve many important properties of frames and can often be used in their place, as well as their approximation properties. The matrix method of computing the regularity of refinable function from the univariate case is extended to multivariate refinement equations with arbitrary dilation matrices. This makes it possible to find the exact values of the Hölder exponent of refinable functions and to make a very refine analysis of their moduli of continuity. |

At the same time, steppes are among the most fragile and human-impacted ecosystems of the world. As a result of these ecological and conservation features, steppe ecosystems and organisms have long deserved the attention of ecologists, biogeographers and conservation biologists. Through the contribution of steppe ecology experts from different regions of the world, this volume aims to answer hot questions in steppe ecology and conservation such as how did present-day steppe ecosystems arise? Is the steppe a perfectly identifiable and homogeneous biome, or are there different types of steppes? If the latter is true, what are the abiotic and biotic factors that define steppe ecosystems? Do they function differently? In short, what is a steppe? Can we identify clearly steppe-specific taxa? Are their functional traits homogeneous across steppe ecosystems? How are their main biodiversity patterns?However, this book also responds to the current concern about the future of the worlds steppes, threatened by increasing land-use intensification, which brings out the need for their sustainable management on the basis of adequate scientific knowledge. Madeleine Bastide was its President for several years. The group comprises actually more than 100 researchers from different disciplines (physicians, chemists, biologists, pharmacologists, physicists, etc. ) from 22 different countries. The original aim, which, for the most part, has now been achieved, was to create a working group to exchange ideas and results concerning the effects of very low doses and high dilutions. Madeleine Bastide then proposed to publish a collection of the lectures given at their scientific meetings in a bilingual book (French and English) entitled “Signals and Images”. The first volume was published in 1990 by the ATELIERS ALPHA BLEUE. It contains lectures on the new pharmacological approach and related concepts that were presented at the 3rd and 4th Symposiums held in Paris in 1989 and 1990. This volume treats the problem of the effects of very low doses and high dilution in in vitro and in vivo experimental models. It is conceivable that this effect, like that of elect- magnetic fields, is none other than an “ultra molecular” effect as shown in yet p- lished results. The effect could be interpreted as a piece of information, i. e. a signal whose transmission and perception remains to be elucidated. According to Madeleine Bastide “everything depends on the nature and quality of the information, signals and images”. |
