columbia university masters in clinical psychology: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Change Efforts Douglas Haldeman, 2020-06-30 This book is the first exhaustive examination of empirical psychological data pertinent to both sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) and gender identity change efforts (GICE). It offers contemporary, empirically based guidance for practitioners and educators in all major mental health and counseling professions. Conversion therapy and reparative therapy were the previous terms used to describe efforts to reshape an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity. The use of the term therapy tacitly and falsely implied that such efforts were based on empirically validated mental health practice. An introduction by the editor, Douglas C. Haldeman, provides the book's rationale and a summary of the major issues addressed. Ten chapters divided into four sections examine pertinent aspects of SOCE/GICE. This book can be used in courses relating to LGBTQ-affirmative therapy/counseling and mental health courses focusing on diversity, inclusivity, and equity.

columbia university masters in clinical psychology: Handbook of Clinical Behavioral Pediatrics Alan M. Gross, Ronald S. Drabman, 2013-03-07 Since 1978, the editors have collaborated on several research projects and spent many hours at conventions discussing research, graduate education, and patient care. The idea for this volume arose when we both concluded that the area of behavioral pediatrics needed a how to book. Several important scholarly re views had recently appeared. They presented excellent summary information concerning the general assumptions and theories underlying the area of behav ioral medicine with children. But these volumes devote very little attention to the application of clinical methods. What was needed, we thought, was a book that would allow graduate students and practicing clinicians the opportunity to peer into the minds of eminent practitioners and understand their thinking. Thus the book was conceived. Editing books represents a special kind of challenge. One has to sell an idea to a group of distinguished colleagues. They have to believe enough in that idea to devote the considerable time and effort necessary to bring thought into reality. In this case, there were two ideas we tried to sell to our colleagues.

columbia university masters in clinical psychology: Guidebook for Clinical Psychology Interns Gary K. Zammit, James W. Hull, 2013-11-21 The internship is the capstone experience of professional education and training preparatory for the application of psychology in health and human services. It is analagous for the practice of psychology to what the doctoral dissertation represents in the student's development as a scholar. At its best, the internship should be viewed as far more than simply a require ment for one's degree or licensure, a rite de passage for entry into the profes sion. Rather, it should be regarded by students and faculty alike as a rich opportunity for personal and professional growth, the opportunity to as sess and even rethink one's assumptions about human behavior and psy chological problems in the context of different client populations, types of problems addressed, and psychological service system environments. In articulating the first formal guidelines for the accreditation of grad uate training programs in clinical psychology, a committee of the American Psychological Association, comprised of distinguished psychologists of their day, asked, What are the aims of a psychological internship? The committee replied to that question as follows: Underlying all of its aims is the principle . . . that the knowledge es sential to the practice of clinical psychology cannot be obtained solely from books, lectures, or any other devices which merely provide infor mation about people or about ways of studying them.

Wallace, PhD, 2007-11-26 This essential collection presents a state-of-the-art framework for how workers in public health and related disciplines should conceptualize health disparities and how they should be addressed worldwide. The resulting chapters articulate new theory, procedures, and policies; the legacy of racism; community-based participatory research; new internet technology; training community workers and educators; closing the education and health gap; and addressing the needs of special populations. Toward Equity in Health is an essential book for all who are working toward global health equity-whether in health education, health promotion, disease prevention, public health, the health care delivery system, or patient- and population level health.
columbia university masters in clinical psychology: Clinical Psychology C. Eugene Walker, 2013-11-21 The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a survey of some of the major areas of clinical psychology. No attempt has been made to include every area relevant to clinical psychology; the choices are selective but represent the wide range of areas touched by clinical psychologists. For some years I have felt the need for a book that provides students with more of a historical introduction and context from which to view current clinical psychology than is included in most textbooks. The issues and problems of clinical psychology have been with us since the beginning of time; however, most psychological literature is written with the bias that anything older than five or ten years is not relevant. Those who attempt to take a long-range view of clinical psychology are sometimes able to recall the early development of the field in the 1930s and 1940s. In this text, I asked the authors to begin with a brief survey of ancient and medieval history to set the stage for a discussion of current research and developments in the field. I hope that a presentation of this sort will provide the reader-whether advanced undergraduate, graduate, or professional-with a sense of perspective and context from which to view and understand clinical psychology.
