The British Virgin Islands (BVI) provides administrative, audit, and legal services to international business companies, which is another key component of the economy. Developments in the financial sector and regulatory framework warrant an update of the assessment conducted under the IMF’s Offshore Financial Center (OFC) program. Financial Services Commission Act (FSCA) provides the Financial Services Commission (FSC) with a wide array of specific regulatory, supervisory, and enforcement powers. The banking system has been insulated from global financial shocks. Many critical elements develop a robust and proportionate crisis management framework.

british virgin islands business registry: Offshore Company Fundamentals David Offshorman, 2021-05-18 Everything starts out small... The author of this book once heard this mysterious word offshore for the first time, too. And he, too, asked himself questions like: ‘What does a registered agent do?’, ‘How much do nominee services cost?’, ‘Why do I need an apostille?’, and ‘Where is it better to open a bank account?’. It is this inexperienced reader that the book is intended for, and its title speaks for itself. ‘Offshore Company Fundamentals’ contains basic information that is necessary to anyone who, on hearing the word Panama, thinks of a broad hat, rather than of ‘Panama Papers’. However, a sophisticated reader will also appreciate the survey of events and facts without which the topic can hardly be considered properly covered, although they do not exactly qualify as ‘fundamental stuff’: — Panama Papers and other offshore leaks – What data will be available in the era of worldwide exchange of information: sometimes the future looks back at you from your computer screen; — Cyprus deposit haircut 2013, an event that usually makes one lose faith in humanity, but in this case for some reason the only thing lost was money; — How to open a bank account in the new environment? – Learning to fly is easier; — International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), an organisation that is more like an elite Boy Scout task force digging up compromising material on the powers that be if they are in any way associated with offshores; — Where is the nominee director heading? – Wherever he is heading, now you will not be going the same way; — Compliance Officer, a bogey that sophisticated businessmen use to scare children into good behaviour. The more recent popular questions also include: What are CFC rules? Will I need to comply with economic substance requirements? How does the automatic exchange of tax information work? Why set up a trust? Of course, the author could not but cover these highly relevant topics, too. Whether he has succeeded in this and other tasks is up to you to decide!

british virgin islands business registry: Business Associations Lynn M. LoPucki, Andrew Verstein, 2020-09-17 Business Associations: A Systems Approach is the first Business Associations casebook organized by function (decision-making, finance, investor litigation, investment transfer, etc.) instead of by entity type (partnerships, corporations, LLCs, etc.). Functional organization avoids repetition and makes full coverage of corporations, partnerships, LLCs, and limited partnerships possible in a four-, or even three-, credit course. The systems approach is the basis for several successful casebooks in other fields, most notably LoPucki, Warren and Lawless’s Secured Transactions: A Systems Approach. The approach focuses on the actions of the lawyers, businesspeople, and government administrators who apply law rather than merely on abstract law. Business Associations: A Systems Approach provides hundreds of realistic, fact-rich problems in legal practice settings. Students apply their new knowledge of law and how the systems work to advise hypothetical clients. The cases are recent, heavily edited, and rarely longer than five pages. Professors and students will benefit from: Full coverage of agency, corporations, partnerships, LLCs, limited partnerships and the role of legal entities in society Tables, figures, photos, and one cartoon Fundamental documents for Facebook and a hypothetical LLC (BKG Catalina) and operating agreement, which are also integrated into the text and problems Cleanly edited, easy-to-read cases Recent cases that illustrate modern business practices and reflect current law Organization by function, which reduces the repetition required in organization by entity type Modular organization, allowing the chapters to be taught in any order An approach that any kind of entity could be made to work like any other. Other books teach what kinds of entities to use in what situations. Fact-rich, realistic problems in practice settings An introductory assignment that provides an overview of the course Clear and direct examples and explanations, free of jargon and idioms that cause difficulty for students from other cultures. Great for LL.M.s, MJSs and foreign J.D.s! A detailed glossary

british virgin islands business registry: Stubborn Structures Bálint Magyar, 2019-04-10 The editor of this book has brought together contributions designed to capture the essence of post-communist politics in East-Central Europe and Eurasia. Rather than on the surface structures of nominal democracies, the nineteen essays focus on the informal, often intentionally hidden, disguised and illicit understandings and arrangements that penetrate formal institutions. These phenomena often escape even the best-trained outside observers, familiar with the concepts of established democracies. Contributors to this book share the view that understanding post-communist politics is best served by a framework that builds from the ground up, proceeding from a fundamental social context. The book aims at facilitating a lexical convergence; in the absence of a robust vocabulary for describing and discussing these often highly complex informal phenomena, the authors wish to advance a new terminology of post-communist regimes. Instead of a finite dictionary, a kind of conceptual cornucopia is offered. The resulting variety reflects a larger harmony of purpose that can significantly expand the understanding the “real politics” of post-communist regimes. Countries analyzed from a variety of aspects, comparatively or as single case studies, include Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Hungary, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Ukraine.

british virgin islands business registry: The Politics of Ponzi Schemes Marie Springer, 2020-12-30 In the space of three years, from 2009 to 2012 Bernie Madoff, Tom Petters and R. Allen Stanford were all convicted for running multi-billion dollar Ponzi schemes. These three schemes alone have had the largest financial take in U.S. history. But what role does the economy and legislation play in the occurrences of Ponzi schemes? What is the nature of Ponzi schemes and what are their tools and mechanisms? What can we know about Ponzi perpetrators? Unraveling the answers to these questions (and many more), Marie Springer provides the first representative portrait of Ponzi schemes, their perpetrators, and their victims. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, she begins by presenting an overview of different types of Ponzi schemes. She later explores perpetrators and victims of Ponzi schemes followed by a close examination of economic trends, regulatory changes, and the financial relationship with Ponzi schemes. Other key features include: • A non-technical overview of both offender based and offense-based approaches of studying this form of fraud. • Examples of Ponzi schemes and Ponzi schemers. • A wealth of descriptive statistics on known federal cases from the 1960s until the present to quantify this specific form of fraud. Broadening our understanding of Ponzi schemes as a form of white-collar crime, The Politics of Ponzi Schemes provides an excellent foundation for students and practitioners of public administration, banking, as well as investors, finance and accounting, law enforcement officers, legislators and regulators.

british virgin islands business registry: Re-Imagining Offshore Finance Christopher M. Bruner, 2016-11-11 Small jurisdictions have become significant players in cross-border corporate and financial services. Their nature, legal status, and market roles, however, remain under-theorized. Lacking a sufficiently nuanced framework to describe their functions in cross-border finance - and the peculiar strengths of those achieving global dominance in the marketplace - it remains impossible to evaluate their impacts in a comprehensive manner. This book advances a new conceptual framework to refine the analysis and direct it toward more productive inquiries. Bruner canvasses extant theoretical frameworks used to describe and evaluate the roles of small jurisdictions in cross-border finance. He then proposes a new concept that better captures the characteristics, competitive strategies, and market roles of those achieving global dominance in the marketplace - the market-dominant small jurisdiction (MDSJ). Bruner identifies the central features giving rise to such jurisdictions' competitive strengths - some reflect historical, cultural, and geographic circumstances, while others reflect development strategies pursued in light of those circumstances. Through this lens, he evaluates a range of small jurisdictions that have achieved global dominance in specialized areas of cross-border finance, including Bermuda, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and Delaware. Bruner further tests the MDSJ concept's explanatory power through a broader comparative analysis, and he concludes that the MDSJs' significance will likely continue to grow - as will the need for a more effective means of theorizing their roles in cross-border finance and the global dynamics generated by their ascendance.
