Percy, 1997-03-01 With The Town of Tonawanda, author John Percy has created an unprecedented collection of historic photographs, illustrating over a century of change. Readers catch glimpses of the town as it progressed from its agricultural era through industrialization, into suburbanization. Located immediately north of the City of Buffalo, the Town of Tonawanda was able to build on the success of that city's nineteenth-century growth. Luckily, the town's development has been recorded on film; many rare and never-before-published photographs are in the collection of the Tonawanda-Kenmore Historical Society, the principal source for this new work. Overfield. His son, Jim, updated and revised his dad's book into a richly illustrated, 400-page 8x10-inch book that updates the history of professional baseball in Buffalo through the 2020 season, which was cancelled for the Triple A Bisons because of the COVID-19 but includes a summary of the Toronto Blue Jays' home away from home in Buffalo during the summer because of the pandemic. That marked the return of major league baseball to Buffalo since the city had a franchise in the Federal League in 1905. Part One of the book is a year-by-year summary of each season from 1857 through 2020, complete with the team's manager, league, record, leading hitter, home run hitter and pitcher. Part Two is a collection of stories from Joe and Jim Overfield, Brian M. Frank and Michael J. Billoni, Assistant Editors of the book, along with Paul Langendorfer, Budd Bailey, Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, Sal Maiorana of Rochester's Democrat and Chronicle and former WGRZ-TV sportscaster Jonah Javad, a sportscaster at WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas. There are also cartoons illustrated by Mike Ricig Ricigliano and more than 200 black and white and color photos. The book honors the memory of Joe Overfield, the former historian of the Buffalo Bisons and a member of the Greater Buffalo and Buffalo Baseball Halls of Fame. Utts, 2000-09 At the dawn of the nineteenth century, resourceful pioneers carved a small community out of the wilderness in far western New York State. An agent of the Holland Company opened the way by surveying a road from Big Tree Indian Reservation to Lake Erie in 1803. One mile section of that road today is Main Street, East Aurora. A year later, a man named Jabez Warren obtained a contract for 1,443 acres of land, which makes up a large part of the Town of Aurora. The earliest settlers arrived, cleared the forests, farmed the land, harnessed the waterpower, and built mills. Their efforts and the richness of the land formed the foundation of a town that in years to come provided food and materials for the the city of Buffalo and nearby areas. Town of Aurora: 1818-1930, presents more than a century of the history of this vibrant community. It includes some notable people and places. In the spring of 1823, young attorney Millard Fillmore opened the first law office in town--twenty-seven years before he became the nation's thirteenth president. In 1832, Aurora Academy, the most celebrated institution of learning in western New York, was incorporated. By the 1890s, Hamlin Village Farm, and Jewett's Stock Farm were world famous for the breeding of harness race horses. In 1895, Elbert Hubbard established the arts and crafts community of the Roycrofters, which flourished into the 1930s. |

To operate these large specialized plantations, a skilled management and talented and industrious work force was needed. Within these pages are the stories of fifteen African Americans who were closely involved in plantation life in the first half of the century. Through an examination of work, family, community organizations, and political actions, Lillian Williams explores the process by which the migrants adapted to their new environment. The lives of African Americans in Buffalo from 1900 to 1940 reveal much about race, class, and gender in the development of urban communities. Black migrant workers transformed the landscape by their mere presence, but for the most part they could not rise beyond the lowest entry-level positions. For African American women, the occupational structure was even more restricted; eventually, however, both men and women increased their earning power, and that—over time—improved life for both them and their loved ones. Lillian Serece Williams is Associate Professor of History in the Women's Studies Department and Director of the Institute for Research on Women at Albany, the State University of New York. buffalo history museum photos: West Seneca James Pace, 2011 West Seneca's history as a working community can be seen in its humble Native American cabins, sturdy Ebenezer Society buildings, simple farms, hardscrabble shops, and blue-collar housing tracts. In the 1700s, the Seneca Indians became the most dominant tribe when the town was part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation. In the 1840s, the arrival of the Ebenezer religious community from Germany continued the area's mostly agricultural development, and they formally incorporated the town in 1851. Their departure in the 1860s led to the arrival of more immigrants, primarily farmers, laborers, and shopkeepers. The next 100 years in West Seneca saw its development continue. In the 1950s, a further influx of new residents looking for affordable homes in a suburban setting led to the town's rapid growth as a mecca for working people. |

buffalo history museum photos: The Best Planned City in the World Francis R. Kowsky, 2018 Beginning in 1868, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux created a series of parks and parkways for Buffalo, New York, that drew national and international attention. The improvements carefully augmented the city's original plan with urban design features inspired by Second Empire Paris, including the first system of parkways to grace an American city. Displaying the plan at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Olmsted declared Buffalo the best planned city, as to streets, public places, and grounds, in the United States, if not in the world. Olmsted and Vaux dissolved their historic partnership in 1872, but Olmsted continued his association with the Queen City of the Lakes, designing additional parks and laying out important sites within the growing metropolis. When Niagara Falls was threatened by industrial development, he led a campaign to protect the site and in 1885 succeeded in persuading New York to create the Niagara Reservation, the present Niagara Falls State Park. Two years later, Olmsted and Vaux teamed up again, this time to create a plan for the area around the Falls, a project the two grand masters regarded as the most difficult problem in landscape architecture to do justice to. In this book Francis R. Kowsky illuminates this remarkable constellation of projects. Utilizing original plans, drawings, photographs, and copious numbers of reports and letters, he brings new perspective to this vast undertaking, analyzing it as a cohesive expression of the visionary landscape and planning principles that Olmsted and Vaux pioneered.
