Zudem erfolgte die Herstellung von maleierten PHB (C) als Verträglichkeitsvermittler. An zwei- und dreikomponentigen Blends konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Herstellung der Blends möglich ist, diese jedoch zu ausgeprägter Koaleszenz neigen. Die C-Typen bewirken zwar teilweise eine Verfeinerung der Morphologie, vermeiden die Koaleszenz jedoch nicht effektiv. Durch rasterkraftmikroskopische Aufnahmen und mechanische Untersuchungen kann allerdings eine begrenzte Kompatibilisierwirkung nachgewiesen werden. Due to the significantly different processing ranges of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polyamide 6 (PA 6), the combined processing of the two polymers is a process engineering challenge. In order to assess the compatibility and processability of the PA 6-PHB blends, a suitable compounding process was therefore first developed on a twin-screw extruder. In addition, the production of maleated PHB (C) as a compatibilizer was carried out. It could be shown on two- and three-component blends that it is possible to produce the blends, but that they tend to have a pronounced coalescence. Although the C-types partially refine the morphology, they do not effectively prevent coalescence. However, a limited compatibility effect can be demonstrated by atomic force microscopic images and mechanical examinations. Furthermore, a synergistic stiffening effect leads to increased tensile moduli of the blends. This results in up to 131% of the pure PA 6 value in the dry-as-mould state and 151% after conditioning. Using dynamic differential calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the effect could be attributed to the increase in crystallinity. |

A custom accessory is described for full-face examination of filters utilizing a large-diameter infrared (IR) beam. The accessory positions samples to match diameters with that of the diverging analytical beam. Sample absorbance is then measured. With nonuniform deposition of dust on collection filters being a major issue for such analyses, this approach is the most direct way to accomplish sample area averaging. The approach is unconventional since it utilizes large-beam geometries instead of the usually desired minimized beam dimensions. The issues and problems involved in the analysis of quartz on a filter matrix are discussed. Absorption bands chosen, light-scattering effects, curved baselines, random noise, interference fringes, and possible solutions to technical difficulties are the topics covered. The more significant findings include a 20-pg detection limit for quartz when the custom accessory is used and minimal occurrence of light-scattering effects at low wavenumbers. The custom accessory performance was satisfactory and merits further work. With continued research, an on-filter method for quartz analysis of respirable dusts seems achievable |

The Mars analogs on Earth span a variety of environments, such as the super-arid sedimentary plains (e.g., the Qaidam Basin in the north of the Tibetan Plateau, the Mojave Basin in the USA, and the Atacama Desert in South America), the subsurface fracture waters in Precambrian cratons (e.g., the Canadian Shield, the Fennoscandian Shield, and the Kaapvaal Craton), high salinity localities (e.g. Laguna de Tírez, salt mines, and deep-sea brines) as well as extremely cold and highly radiative environments (e.g., polar regions, thin atmosphere). These settings on Earth are more accessible for collecting high-quality mineralogical, geochemical, geochronological, and microbiological data by the state-of-the-art facilities. These data can provide a solid cornerstone for us to understand the cycles of water and other life-essential elements, and their impact on habitability and biodiversity in extreme environments on Earth as well as the limits of life and the detection of biosignatures.
