budget optimization in search-based advertising auctions: Algorithms - ESA 2009 Amos Fiat, Peter Sanders, 2009-09-19 This volume contains the papers presented at ESA 2009: The 17th Annual - ropean Symposium on Algorithms, September 7–9, 2009. ESA has been held annually since 1993, and seeks to cover both theoretical and engineering aspects of algorithms. The authors were asked to classify their paper under one or more categories as described in Fig. 1. Since 2001, ESA has been the core of the larger ALGO conference, which typically includes several satellite conferences. ALGO 2009 was held at the IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The ?ve members of the ALGO 2009 - ganizing Committee were chaired by Thore Husfeldt. The ESA submission deadline was April 12, Easter Sunday. This was clearly an error and we o?er profuse apologies for this mistake. Albeit no excuse, the hard constraints we faced were (a) ICALP noti?cation, April 6, and (b) ESA in Copenhagen, September 7. Between these two endpoints we needed to design a schedule that allowed modifying ICALP rejections for resubmission (1 week), Program Committee deliberations (7 weeks), preparing ?nal versions (4 weeks), and, to prepare, publish, and transport the proceedings (9 weeks). ESA 2009had 272submissions ofwhich 14 werewithdrawn overtime. Of the remaining 222 submissions to Track A (Design and Analysis), 56 were accepted. Of the remaining 36 submissions to Track B (Engineering and Applications), 10 were accepted. This gives an acceptance rate of slightly under 25%.

budget optimization in search-based advertising auctions: Performance Modeling and Engineering Zhen Liu, Cathy H. Xia, 2008-04-12 With the fast development of networking and software technologies, information processing infrastructure and applications have been growing at an impressive rate in both size and complexity, to such a degree that the design and development of high performance and scalable data processing systems and networks have become an ever-challenging issue. As a result, the use of performance modeling and m- surementtechniquesas a critical step in designand developmenthas becomea c- mon practice. Research and developmenton methodologyand tools of performance modeling and performance engineering have gained further importance in order to improve the performance and scalability of these systems. Since the seminal work of A. K. Erlang almost a century ago on the mod- ing of telephone traf c, performance modeling and measurement have grown into a discipline and have been evolving both in their methodologies and in the areas in which they are applied. It is noteworthy that various mathematical techniques were brought into this eld, including in particular probability theory, stochastic processes, statistics, complex analysis, stochastic calculus, stochastic comparison, optimization, control theory, machine learning and information theory. The app- cation areas extended from telephone networks to Internet and Web applications, from computer systems to computer software, from manufacturing systems to s- ply chain, from call centers to workforce management.

budget optimization in search-based advertising auctions: Channel Strategies and Marketing Mix in a Connected World Saibal Ray, Shuya Yin, 2019-12-14 This book aims to revisit the “traditional” interaction between channel strategies and the marketing mix in a connected world. In particular, it focuses on the following four dimensions in this context: Consumers, Products, Value Proposition and Sustainability. Keeping in mind the growing digitalization of business processes in the retail world and the move towards omni-channel retailing, the book introduces the state-of-the-art academic and practitioner studies along these dimensions that could enhance the understanding of the potential impact that new technologies and strategies can have on practice in the near future. When launching a new product/service to market, firms usually consider various components of the marketing mix to influence consumers’ purchase behaviors, such as product design, convenience, value proposition, promotions, sustainability initiatives, etc. This mix varies depending on the specific channel and consumer niche that the firm is targeting. But this book shows how channel strategy also influences the effectiveness in utilizing the marketing mix to attract potential customers.
budget optimization in search-based advertising auctions: E-Commerce and Web Technologies Francesco Buccafurri, Giovanni Semeraro, 2010-08-26 After the lesson learned during last years and following the successful edition of EC-Web 2009, for its 11th edition EC-Web tried to provide a clearer description of the electronic commerce universe focusing on some relevant topics. The main focus was not only on Internet-related techniques and approaches. The aim of EC-Web 2010 was to also cover aspects related to theoretical foundations of e-commerce, business processes as well as new approaches exploiting recently emerged technologies and scenarios such as the Semantic Web, Web services, SOA architectures, mobile and ubiquitous computing, just to cite a few. Due to their central role in any realistic e-commerce infrastructure, security and privacy issues were widely considered, without excluding legal and regulatory aspects. The choice of the above relevant topics directly reflects the fact that electronic commerce (EC), in the last few years, has changed and evolved into a well-established and founded reality both from a technological point of view and from a scientific one. Nevertheless, together with its evolution, new challenges and topics have emerged as well as new questions have been raised related to many aspects of EC. Keeping in mind the experience of the last edition of EC-Web, we maintained, for its 11th edition, the structure and the scientific organization of EC-Web 2009, aiming to highlight the autonomous role of the different (sometimes heterogeneous) aspects of EC, without missing their interdisciplinary scope.

budget optimization in search-based advertising auctions: Learning in Repeated Auctions Thomas Nedelec, Clément Calauzènes, Noureddine El Karoui, Vianney Perchet, 2022-02-14 Online auctions are one of the most fundamental facets of the modern economy and power an industry generating hundreds of billions of dollars a year in revenue. Online auction theory has historically focused on the question of designing the best way to sell a single item to potential buyers relying on some prior knowledge agents were assumed to have on each other. In new markets, such as online advertising, however, similar items are sold repeatedly, and agents are unaware of each other or might try to manipulate each other, making the assumption invalid. Statistical learning theory now provides tools to supplement those missing pieces of information given enough data, as agents can learn from their environment to improve their strategies. This book is a comprehensive introduction to the learning techniques in repeated auctions. It covers everything from the traditional economic study of optimal one-shot auctions, through learning optimal mechanisms from a dataset of bidders' past values, to showing how strategic agents can actually manipulate repeated auctions to their own advantage. The authors explore the effects of different scenarios and assumptions throughout while remaining grounded in real-world applications. Many of the ideas and algorithms described are used every day to power the Internet economy. This book provides students, researchers and practitioners with a deep understanding of the theory of online auctions and gives practical examples of how to implement in modern-day internet systems.
