bulloch board of education: In Our Own Words Various Authors, 2017-08-24 When Georgia Southern College in the small town of Statesboro opened its doors to its first six colored students in 1965, it did so without much of the very public outcry faced at other schools and colleges as part of desegregation. These six pioneers share their personal memories of integrating the college, which opened doors for those who would follow. In 2014, more than 5,400 African American students enrolled at the school, now known as Georgia Southern University (GSU). The essays of those initial pioneers—as well as those by fifteen other alums through the Class of 1985—demonstrate the perseverance of the human spirit and illustrate how social change can be achieved by boldly confronting difficult and frightening situations to bring about lasting reform. Their stories of integration at the southern school tell of emotional ordeals, some of which led to lasting scars and times of defeat. Life wasn’t easy if you were black on a predominantly white college campus. But in the midst of despair comes triumph. In Our Own Words also shares the determination and dedication of those early students, most of whom went on to successful careers and personal accomplishments. This powerful collection of essays that needed to be written showcases a group of students who never dreamed they would one-day help shape the college’s history and leave a legacy that would allow others to follow in their footsteps.

bulloch board of education: The Bulloch Belles Walter E. Wilson, 2015-10-01 The Bulloch women of Roswell, Georgia, were not typical antebellum Southern belles. Most were well educated world travelers skilled at navigating social circles far outside the insular aristocracy of the rural South. Their lives were filled with intrigue, espionage, scandal, adversity and perseverance. During the Civil War they eluded Union spies on land and blockaders at sea and afterwards they influenced the national debate on equal rights for women. The impact of their Southern ideals increased exponentially when they integrated into the Roosevelt family of New York. Drawing on primary sources, this book provides new insight into the private lives of the women closely linked with the Bulloch family. They include four first ladies, a Confederate spy, the mother of President Teddy Roosevelt and a number of his closest confidants. Nancy Jackson, the family's nursemaid slave, is among the less well known but equally fascinating Bulloch women.

bulloch board of education: IJER Vol 2-N4 International Journal of Educational Reform, 1993-10-01 The mission of the International Journal of Educational Reform (IJER) is to keep readers up-to-date with worldwide developments in education reform by providing scholarly information and practical analysis from recognized international authorities. As the only peer-reviewed scholarly publication that combines authors’ voices without regard for the political affiliations perspectives, or research methodologies, IJER provides readers with a balanced view of all sides of the political and educational mainstream. To this end, IJER includes, but is not limited to, inquiry based and opinion pieces on developments in such areas as policy, administration, curriculum, instruction, law, and research. IJER should thus be of interest to professional educators with decision-making roles and policymakers at all levels turn since it provides a broad-based conversation between and among policymakers, practitioners, and academicians about reform goals, objectives, and methods for success throughout the world. Readers can call on IJER to learn from an international group of reform implementers by discovering what they can do that has actually worked. IJER can also help readers to understand the pitfalls of current reforms in order to avoid making similar mistakes. Finally, it is the mission of IJER to help readers to learn about key issues in school reform from movers and shakers who help to study and shape the power base directing educational reform in the U.S. and the world.
bulloch board of education: Pursuing a Promise F. Erik Brooks, 2006 In Statesboro, Georgia, two schools coexisted: one white and the other black. Yet, these schools were intertwined by their geographical location and the traditions of the segregated South. There are many glaring similarities between the white students of Georgia Southern University's forerunner, the First District A&M School, and the black students of the Statesboro Industrial and High School. Yet as happened all too often in the South as implementation of the federal court's desegregation orders took shape, Negro schools were downgraded or outright closed. Statesboro was no different. While, First District A&M became a regional university, Statesboro Industrial and High School was downgraded to a junior high school. In 1961, integration on the higher-education level at Georgia's flagship university captured national attention. Few works if any have examined desegregation in the context of non-flagship universities. Likewise, there is a misguided mythology that desegregation occurred quietly at Georgia Southern University: it's clear that while there was not the violence and rioting seen elsewhere in Southern universities, blacks were marginalized and did not feel welcome at the college. A passive group after the initial integration, blacks adopted tactics of protest and confrontation to empower themselves. Taking a page from the Civil Rights Movement, black students and faculty established organizations to confront discrimination and gain access to campus leadership positions. This is a story about the defeats, victories, struggles, and developments of blacks at Georgia Southern University.
