commas that enclose practice: Feminist Practices Dr Lori A Brown, 2013-06-28 Women continue to be extremely under-represented in the architectural profession. Despite equal numbers of male and female students entering architectural studies, there is at least 17-25% attrition of female students and not all remaining become practicing architects. In both the academic and the professional fields of architecture, positions of power and authority are almost entirely male, and as such, the profession is defined by a heterosexual, Eurasian male perspective. This book argues that it is vital for all architectural students and practitioners to be exposed to a diversity of contemporary architectural practices, as this might provide a first step into broadening awareness and transforming architectural engagement. It considers the relationships between feminist methodologies and the various approaches toward design and their impact upon our understanding and relationship to the built environment. In doing so, this collection challenges two conventional ideas: firstly, the definition of architecture and secondly, what constitutes a feminist practice. This collection of up-and-coming female architects and designers use a wide range of local and global examples of their work to question different aspects of these two conventional ideas. While focusing on feminist perspectives, the book offers insights into many different issues, concerns and interpretations of architecture, proposing through these types of engagement, architecture can become more culturally, politically and environmentally relevant. This 'next generation' of architects claim feminism as their own and through doing so, help define what feminism means and how it is evolving in the 21st century. |

commas that enclose practice: The Boy in the Bush D. H. Lawrence, M. L. Skinner, 2002-04-11 This is the first critical edition of The Boy in the Bush, a novel whose unlikely genesis has been surrounded in mystery and the subject of claim and counter-claim. A systematic study of all the extant textual documents has revealed a process of composition and revision which qualifies the novel to be treated unequivocally as part of the Lawrence canon. At Lawrence's suggestion an Australian nurse and part-time author, Mollie Skinner (whom he had met in 1922), wrote a tale set in late nineteenth-century Western Australia about a newly-arrived young Englishman's reactions to Perth and the outback. Lawrence's complete rewriting converted her production into an ambitious, powerful novel. The reading text here established eliminates all such instances of censorship and strips away the thousands of regularisings and miscopyings introduced by typists and typesetters. Based on Lawrence's autograph manuscript the text meticulously incorporates his subsequent revisions in the typescripts and proofs. |

commas that enclose practice: David Lodge and the Art-and-Reality Novel Daniel Ammann, 2020-03-31 Two distinctive views emerge concerning the presumed battle between Lodge's creative and critical work. One holds that Lodge’s fiction is antimodernist and therefore lags behind his criticism, which displays a theoretical interest in the modernist and – though to a lesser extent – in the postmodernist text. According to the opposite view, time and again there have been strong elements of modernism and postmodernism in Lodge’s novels. In order to bring together the two lines of Lodge’s work, this study shall focus on some aspects in his fiction that are also discussed in his criticism. Given this interdependence, his declared interest in what he calls the ‘art-and-reality novel’ can be regarded as a major starting-point. The emphasis falls on various forms of interplay in the fields of literature, criticism and reality. Accordingly, it should be possible to apply Lodge the theorist to Lodge the novelist and thus bridge or at least explain the alleged division in his work. |

commas that enclose practice: The Language of Mathematics Robert L. Baber, 2011-09-09 A new and unique way of understanding the translation of concepts and natural language into mathematical expressions Transforming a body of text into corresponding mathematical expressions and models is traditionally viewed and taught as a mathematical problem; it is also a task that most find difficult. The Language of Mathematics: Utilizing Math in Practice reveals a new way to view this process—not as a mathematical problem, but as a translation, or language, problem. By presenting the language of mathematics explicitly and systematically, this book helps readers to learn mathematics¿and improve their ability to apply mathematics more efficiently and effectively to practical problems in their own work. Using parts of speech to identify variables and functions in a mathematical model is a new approach, as is the insight that examining aspects of grammar is highly useful when formulating a corresponding mathematical model. This book identifies the basic elements of the language of mathematics, such as values, variables, and functions, while presenting the grammatical rules for combining them into expressions and other structures. The author describes and defines different notational forms for expressions, and also identifies the relationships between parts of speech and other grammatical elements in English and components of expressions in the language of mathematics. Extensive examples are used throughout that cover a wide range of real-world problems and feature diagrams and tables to facilitate understanding. The Language of Mathematics is a thought-provoking book of interest for readers who would like to learn more about the linguistic nature and aspects of mathematical notation. The book also serves as a valuable supplement for engineers, technicians, managers, and consultants who would like to improve their ability to apply mathematics effectively, systematically, and efficiently to practical problems. |

commas that enclose practice: Writing with Confidence Alan Meyers, 2002-07 Writing with Confidence , a value-priced developmental writing worktext, provides essential instruction and practice in basic writing skills at the sentence and paragraph level. The first developmental text to incorporate high-interest, connected discourse subject matter in its exercises, Writing with Confidence retains and expands on this feature. Most chapters pursue a theme throughout the exercises the dreams and premonitions surrounding the death of Abraham Lincoln; animal facts and oddities; the gustatory achievements of Diamond Jim Brady, the world's greatest eater; the voyage of the Kon-Tiki; and so on. The text's six-unit structure includes 30 short chapters on the writing process, paragraph organization and development, the shape of the essay, all the rhetorical modes, and all the sentence skills. The writing chapters are fully process-oriented, showing the development of a paragraph in six steps, from planning and outlining through drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading. Optional collaborative activities are provided in the margins of each chapter. This focus on writing is balanced with equal attention to sentence skills, not only for native speakers of English who need help, but for non-English-dominant speakers as well. ESL boxes provide help for students whose first language is not English, as do the two final chapters of the book, which address troublesome matters such as verb phrases, word order, articles, and prepositions. The reading-writing connection throughout the book has been expanded, with sixteen additional readings in the last unit of the book, including several written by students. And the popular Blueprints for Writing found in the rhetorical chapters have been carried into unit-ending Blueprints for Success, in which the most important concepts and practices are summarized in graphs and charts. |
commas that enclose practice: Writing for the Stage Leroy Clark, 2006 With skills-focused exercises ranging from beginning to advanced levels, Writing for the Stage takes students through the creative process to develop a stageworthy script. The purpose of Writing for the Stage: A Practical Playwriting Guide is to provide students with a variety of exercises to help develop writing skills for the stage that eventually lead to the creation of a script. Although there is no magic formula--no right or wrong way to create a dramatic work--there are still traditional expectations for plot, conflict, theme, character development, dialogue, and so forth, that need to be discussed. Features Provides both a theoretical framework and practical exercises for developing skills, helping students to gain a complete understanding of the creative process. Includes exercises at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels for each topic, allowing instructors to choose the most appropriate exercises for their students. Looks at the relationship of writing to the practical realities of today's theatre, making students aware of how the realities of staging and budget must be considered in writing for today's theatre. Explores three kinds of conflict--internal, personal, and external--and conflict within society, providing many choices for developing dramatic situations. Discusses not only the masculine linear approach to playwriting but also feminine and non-linear structure, providing exercises for non-traditional, experimental scene development, opening students' eyes to exploring structure and character in more creative, experimental ways. Devotes an entire chapter to writing monologues, including short monologues within plays and long, one-person plays, providing extra guidance in this important technique.
