Fishing Cheat River: What You Actually Need to Know Before You Go

Cheat River West Virginia runs through the northern part of the state and drains into the Monongahela near Fairmont. It is popular for trout and smallmouth bass fishing, but the conditions change fast and most people show up unprepared. I spend most of my time on the middle section between Philippi and Morgantown. The river here is 40 to 60 feet wide, rocky bottom, and the water can rise two feet in under an hour if it rains upstream. The main public access is at Philippi Beach Park, which has a concrete ramp. It gets crowded on weekends, especially between May and September. There is a smaller pull-off near the Route 250 bridge that works for knee-deep wading but you cannot fit a trailer there. If you are driving a trailer, do not try the dirt turnoff near the old mill site south of Philippi. The ground is soft shale and I got my truck stuck there in 2023. It took two hours and a tow truck to get out. Since then I always check the water level before launching. Anything above 4.5 feet at the USGS gauge near Grafton and you should wait. There is a smaller put-in downstream near Cheat Lake Dam on the east side. That access is mostly used by canoe and kayak people because the current is faster and the rocks are sharper. Not recommended for beginners in a flat-bottom boat.

What Species Are Actually There

Trout are the main draw. Rainbow trout are stocked regularly by the Division of Natural Resources, usually in the spring and fall. Brown trout hold in the deeper pools, especially downstream of Route 50. Smallmouth bass pick up in late summer when the water clears and warms. You will also find carp, catfish, and occasional gar if you are willing to look in the backwater areas. The stocking schedule changes every year. Last season they moved some of the fall stocking dates to earlier because of drought concerns. Check the current year schedule on the WVDNR website before you plan a trip. The numbers I have seen are roughly 15,000 rainbow trout stocked per season across the Cheat watershed, plus some brook trout higher upstream near Spruce Creek.

Tackle and Technique That Actually Works

For trout, a 7-foot 3-weight rod with a floating line and a 9-foot leader is standard. Nymphing with a woolly bugger or elk hair caddis pattern works best in the riffles. Dry flies are viable in the early morning and late evening during hatches, but the river moves too fast for consistent dry fly action unless you hit the back eddies. I carry a parachute Adams, an elk hair caddis in size 14, and a tan body woolly bugger in size 12. For smallmouth, 7-weight rod with a sink-tip line or a weighted nymph. Egg patterns and streamers in sizes 6 to 8 work. The key is getting the presentation below the surface film because smallmouth hold in the seams between riffles. I usually dead drift a single egg pattern with split shot about 18 inches above a bead or just use a weighted fly and let it swing across the current. Boat fishing works but you need a shallow draft jon boat or aluminum skiff. Bass boats sit too low in the water and you will be dragging the prop on gravel bars. A 15-foot boat with a 15 HP motor is about the minimum. Some anglers use drift boats but those are harder to maneuver in the narrower sections.

Common Mistakes People Make

Wading without a helmet on the rocky sections is a bad idea. The bottom is limestone and shale. Rocks get slick fast even in low water. I saw a guy take a hard fall at the seam near the Route 250 bridge last spring and crack his helmet against a boulder. He was lucky. Helmet, stubbies, and a vest. That is not optional. Another mistake is ignoring the gauge. The Cheat rises quickly and the color changes from clear to chocolate brown within minutes. When the gauge reads above 6 feet at Grafton, the river is usually too stained and fast to fish safely. I learned that the hard way once when I was wading and the water came up past my chest in about 20 minutes. Had to scramble up a steep bank to get out. Never again. People also overthink the fly selection. The river does not need a fancy pattern. A basic black or tan bugger in size 10 to 14 catches more fish than most of the specialized imitations. Keep it simple and focus on the drift.

Licenses and Regulations

You need a West Virginia fishing license. Residents are $17 for a one-year license and non-residents are about $42. The trout permit is an additional $8.50 if you are targeting trout specifically. There is a general trout slot limit and a special regulation zone on the lower Cheat where catch and release is required for trout under 12 inches. Check the current regulations PDF from WVDNR because they change periodically. The 2024 rules had a couple of updates on the free fishing days that confused some people. Fly fishing only sections exist on the upper reaches near the headwaters. Those are marked on the map. If you go above the Route 50 bridge heading upstream toward the source area, you are in a catch and release fly-only zone for trout. Violations carry fines. I know someone who got a citation there for using a spinner on a technical stretch. Not worth it.

Best Time of Year

Spring is the best month for trout. The water is still cold and the fish are feeding hard. Fall is second best when the smallmouth move into the warmer shallows. Summer can be tough because the water gets warm and the trout move to the deeper pools. Winter fishing is possible but dangerous. Ice forms in the slow sections and the wind chill near the river makes exposure a real risk. I have fished it in January and it was brutal. Not recommended unless you have serious cold-water wading experience. The USGS maintains a gauge at Grafton and another near Cheat Lake. The Grafton gauge is the one you should watch. Normal flow is between 200 and 400 cubic feet per second. Above 800 CFS and the river is likely too high for safe wading. Below 100 CFS the river becomes too low in many sections and you will be bottom-feeling everything. The sweet spot is between 200 and 500 CFS with clear water. That usually means two to three days after a rain event rather than during or right after the rain. Water temperature matters more than most people realize. Trout stop feeding above 68°F. In mid-summer the Cheat can hit 72°F in the afternoon in the lower reaches. Go early in the morning or find spring-fed seeps and deep pools. The section near the mouth of Cheat Creek holds colder water because of groundwater input. That is one of the better summer spots if you can get there early.

A Specific Problem and Workaround

Last September I was fishing the stretch between the Route 50 bridge and the old mill site during a low-flow period. The water was clear but shallow, maybe 12 to 18 inches deep in the main channel. Every cast I made spooked fish immediately. The water was so transparent that even shadows from trees were enough to alert them. I tried switching to a smaller fly, longer leader, and slower presentation. None of it helped enough. The workaround was to fish the far bank shadow. The sun was low and the tree line cast a long shadow across about half the river width. I positioned myself in the shade and made all my casts through the shaded water. The fish in the sunlit areas were locked up tight but the ones in the shadow fed normally. It cut my catch rate from one fish every 20 minutes to about one every three minutes. The lesson is not new, but it is easy to forget when you are standing in the river thinking the problem is your fly selection.

Bottom Line

Cheat River is a solid fishery if you respect the conditions. It is not pristine. It gets heavy pressure on weekends and some sections are degraded by erosion and sediment from agricultural runoff upstream. The fishing is still good and the scenery is decent. Just come prepared, check the gauge, and do not ignore basic safety. The river is more unpredictable than it looks and it does not care how experienced you think you are.
