Death Guard Kill Team: The Actual Problems People Run Into
Most lists I see for Death Guard Kill Team fall into one of two traps. People either pile on too many cultists and can't win a fight with a single model, or they grab one or two heavy hitters and wonder why they're still losing mid-table. Both approaches ignore what the faction is actually built around.
Death Guard Kill Team isn't a shooting army. It's a close-range attrition faction that wins by making opponents make bad decisions over multiple rounds. Your key tools are rot encumbrance, plaguebearers if your list runs them, and the slow but relentless pressure from a properly built platoon of death guard warriors plus a daemon prince or marines.
Building a Functional Death Guard Kill Team
Start with three death guard champions. They anchor your board control and give you a reliable source of wounds that actually survives long enough to matter. Champions with the new rot-sickle weapons will clear cultist-level threats without needing to win a full fight exchange. Then slot in your specialists. A plague doctor is almost always worth the points because they can keep your models off the table from dying to random roll-based damage. You don't want to replace models every round.
Your fourth and fifth slots depend on whether you're running a Daemon Prince or just committing to the mortal army route. Daemon Prince lists look flashy but cost way more than they return in tactical flexibility. A single death guard lieutenant with a combi-plasma gives you comparable output at less than half the point cost and doesn't break your list if he dies turn one.
The real mistake people make is ignoring the battle-forged attachment system. You can attach a squad of death guard cultists to a champion and gain additional command points that way. I figured this out after losing three straight games where my opponent kept picking apart my isolated models. Attaching cultists to a champion changed the whole dynamic because now every shot I took had a backup model nearby, and my opponent couldn't focus fire the way they wanted to.
Rot Encumbrance Management
This is the system that separates people who actually understand Death Guard Kill Team from people who just paint their models and hope. Every time a model rolls damage through armor saves, rot accumulates. At three rot points, that model is encumbered. At six, it's dying.
The practical result is that Death Guard units deteriorate over the course of a match even when they're winning fights. Your cultists will become encumbered by turn two if they're taking shots. This is intentional. The strategy is to use your encumbered models as chaff while your champions and specialists stay clean. Never treat encumbered cultists as disposable. They're supposed to absorb fire so your expensive models don't have to. When a cultist hits six rot points, pull it back if you can. It's better to hold a position and lose a model on your terms than to waste a turn shooting with a dying unit.
The Plaguebearers Mistake
Plaguebearers are available in Death Guard Kill Team but most players include them for the wrong reason. They're not included for their shooting. They're included for their wound pool and ability to hold objectives in the late game. A single plaguebearer can absorb three turns of focused fire while your actual damage dealers work from cover.
I learned this the hard way after running a list with two plaguebearers and no other durable units. My opponent just ignored my shooting entirely and charged the plaguebearers. I lost both in turn two and had nothing left to contest the board. Adding a champion with extra wounds changed everything because now my opponent had to split fire between my durable units and my damage dealers.
Tournament Reality Check
Death Guard Kill Team struggles against fast, deep-striking lists. If your opponent can get a unit within six inches of one of your models on turn one before you've established your positioning, you're in trouble. The faction's strength is in sustained pressure over multiple rounds. It doesn't handle sudden burst damage well.
Against slow, methodical factions like Necron Kill Teams or Grey Knight Kill Teams, Death Guard excels. You outlast them. Against lists with heavy teleport strikes or jump-in deployment, you need to adjust your approach. Move your champions forward early. Don't let your cultists spread out across the board. Keep a tight formation so you can consolidate and absorb charges more effectively.
Command Point Usage
Save your command points. Most Death Guard players burn them on turn one trying to force a save or reroll a failed charge. This is backwards. The command points you should be hoarding are the ones that let you activate an additional model later in the game when it matters. A single command point spent on turn three to give one of your champions an extra action often decides the match because your opponent has run out of reaction commands by then.
The faction gets one command ability per battle. Learn it cold. Know exactly when to trigger it versus when to save the point for later. This is where tournament-level play diverges from casual play. At the local store level, nobody pays attention to command point management. At a serious tournament, it's the difference between top 8 and going home early.
What This List Doesn't Do Well
Death Guard Kill Team has zero anti-vehicle capability in most configurations. If your opponent brings a tank or a large monster unit, you're relying on dice rolls and hoping for the best. There's no workaround except accepting that this matchup is coinflip territory and focusing on winning the rest of your matches.
The faction also has weak ranged output. Your shooting is generally sub-par compared to other factions at the same point value. You're not going to win a shooting duel. Accept this and force your opponent to engage in melee, which is where your wound pools and rot mechanics actually shine.
