Here is what I found useful from my own experience. The ISACA website gives you the official review manual, but it costs money. Instead, I used a combination of YouTube walkthroughs, some Reddit threads from people who recently passed, and practice questions from a few different sources. One problem I ran into was that many free practice tests have questions that are either too technical or just plain wrong. I noticed this when answering a question about risk assessment and the explanation said something that made no sense from a management perspective. I ended up cross-referencing with the ISACA job practice analysis to verify the correct approach.

The key insight most people miss is that CISM is not about knowing how to implement security controls. It is about knowing when to implement them, how to justify the cost, and what the business impact would be if you do nothing. I had to unlearn a lot of my technical thinking to answer questions correctly. Another counter-intuitive thing I learned is that the exam loves scenarios where you have incomplete information. They want you to choose the first step, not the final solution. In practice, you would obviously gather more data before making a decision, but the exam expects you to pick the immediate management action. I spent about two months preparing while working full-time. That meant studying maybe twenty hours per week total. The practice questions were the most valuable resource because they forced me to think in the right framework. I used free question banks from a couple of websites, though I had to filter out the low-quality ones.

One downside of relying solely on free resources is that you might miss some of the subtleties in the official material. ISACA updates their exam objectives periodically, and unofficial sources sometimes lag behind. I recommend at least reading the free exam outline on the ISACA website to understand what topics are currently tested. If you have the budget, the official ISACA review manual is worth it. But if you are working with zero dollars like I was, you can still pass by focusing on the right study strategy and being careful about which free materials you trust.
