Free Clip Art Borders

I've been using clip art borders in design work for years, mostly because most people just need something quick for a school project or a newsletter and don't want to spend an hour hunting for the right asset. Some export their transparency as white space instead of actual alpha channel transparency. If you're placing the border over a colored background and it looks like there's a white box around it, that's what happened. I've wasted an hour before chasing this down before I finally learned to spot it immediately. Some sites say "free for commercial use" but then include a clause that prevents you from reselling the artwork as-is. For a wedding program or a classroom handout, this doesn't matter. If you're making a product to sell, it does. I learned that one the hard way when a designer friend tried to use a border asset on a printable wall art shop listing and got a cease-and-desist because the asset was under a different license than the one he assumed.

If you're looking for something more reliable than hunting through random Free Clip Art Borders sites, Inkscape has a built-in border generator through its extensions menu. It's not as pretty as purchased assets, but it generates actual scalable vector borders with uniform sizing, and it won't surprise you with hidden licensing terms. Not a bad fallback when the clip art situation is falling apart.
