A Personal Note on What Actually Works
I ran into a specific issue early on that I still see people struggling with online. If you activate a cheat during a mission, the game disables all save functionality until you either complete or fail that mission. This means if you trigger a cheat mid-mission and then your console crashes or loses power, that progress is gone. There is no workaround for this. The only safe practice is to never input cheats during an active storyline mission. Use them in free roam only, and do it before you save your game so you can reload if something goes wrong. Another thing nobody mentions: cheat codes do not stack well. If you input invincibility and then immediately call in a vehicle, sometimes the invincibility timer cancels out early. It happens maybe 30 percent of the time. The fix is simple. Wait a full second after each code finishes displaying its confirmation notification before pressing the next button combination. Rushing it causes these overlaps. Also worth noting is that using cheats disables trophies and achievements for that playthrough session. The game does not warn you about this clearly enough. If you are trying to unlock a specific achievement, turn all cheats off first. You can do this by going to Settings > System > Cheats and toggling them off, or just restart the game entirely which clears everything.
The big limitation with these codes is that they only work on the original Xbox 360 version and the PS3 version. If you are playing the expanded and enhanced version on Xbox One or Series X/S through backward compatibility, most of these codes do not respond. Rockstar disabled them in the remastered builds. There is no way around this other than playing the original disc or digital copy. I learned this the hard way after spending twenty minutes trying to spawn a Rhino in the wrong version.
