Running Through Helheim in God of War
The Helheim section in God of War is essentially a Frozen Inferno dungeon that tests your resource management. You're dealing with cold damage, enemy waves, and a boss fight with Spartan Rage mandatory. Most people breeze through it without thinking too hard about it, but there are a few things that trip up newcomers if you aren't paying attention. Here is how you actually get through it without wasting hours on retries. Start by upgrading your Frost Arrow ability before you even enter the area. The enemies here have frost-based attacks and ice armor, so having the right counter damage matters more than raw DPS early on. I went in fresh from the first region and tried to power through with Kratos's standard combo. It felt wrong immediately. The cold debuff stacked fast and my health regen stopped working reliably. I died to a couple regular enemies because my runic meter was empty and I had no way to clear the frost buildup. After that, I went back and upgraded Helios's Blessing and grabbed a few health potions from the nearby shops. That changed everything.
The Core Mechanics
Helheim runs on a temperature system. Every attack from an ice enemy adds cold to your character. When the cold meter fills up, you start taking damage over time and your movement speed drops. The environment itself adds cold too, so standing still in certain areas drains your meter passively. The workaround is simple but easy to miss. Use fire-based attacks between your normal combos. Each fire hit reduces your cold resistance temporarily. Combine that with the Helios blessing and you can basically stay at neutral temperature for the entire dungeon if you rotate abilities correctly. There is also a secondary mechanic where certain enemies drop a cold aura when they die. If you stand in that aura after killing them, you gain cold faster than normal. It is subtle. I learned this the hard way during the second wave of the Frozen Fields section. I killed a Frost Giant and stayed in place to collect the loot drop. My cold meter hit max in three seconds and I went from fine to dead before I could move.
Enemies and Counters
You will face several enemy types in Helheim. The Frost Wraiths are the most annoying because they phase in and out of visibility. They hit hard with cold damage and their attacks apply a longer cold stack than most enemies. The trick here is to use Blades of Chaos instead of Leviathan Axe when you see one. The Blades have a wider hitbox and the fire damage clears their stealth quicker. Husked Giants are slow but they hit like a truck. Their ice breath attack can fill your cold meter in two seconds if you do not dodge. Roll forward through the attack instead of backward. Rolling backward puts you closer to more enemies that are usually behind you. The Draugr Swarm is the one group most players underestimate. They individually deal low damage, but there are usually six or seven of them. Their combined cold application is brutal. Save a Spartan Rage or a fire runic ability for these groups. Do not try to kite them unless you have high cold resistance gear equipped.

The Boss Fight
The Helheim boss is King Helios. He has three phases and each one changes his attack pattern significantly. Phase one is straightforward ice attacks and a charge move. Dodge sideways during the charge. Rolling toward him or away from him both result in getting hit. Phase two is where people stall. King Helios starts summoning Frost Wraiths and using AoE ice explosions. The explosions create cold zones on the ground that linger for about four seconds. Move constantly. Do not try to trade hits while he is in this phase. Wait for the wraiths to be cleared first, then engage when he has finished an ability animation. Phase three is a rage state. His damage output doubles and his cold attacks apply a stronger debuff. This is the part where having upgraded Helios's Blessing really pays off. It gives you a temporary damage boost and cold immunity for a short duration. Time it right after he uses his biggest attack. You get about five seconds of window before he recovers.
I made the mistake of saving Spartan Rage for phase three on my first attempt. He used three abilities in a row during that phase and I ran out of rage before he became vulnerable. On my second attempt I used Spartan Rage during phase two to clear the wraith swarm quickly, then saved a health potion for phase three. Much cleaner.
Optional Rewards and Progression
There are three chests in Helheim that contain permanent upgrades. One gives you extra health, one gives you extra rage, and one gives you a permanent cold resistance upgrade. The cold resistance one is the most valuable. It stacks with your gear bonuses and makes the entire area feel significantly easier. The area also has a Nornir chest that requires solving a rune puzzle. The puzzle has three locks and you need to find the corresponding runes hidden around the map. Look for glowing symbols on broken walls or behind ice sheets. I spent about twelve minutes finding them on my first pass. The reward is a substantial amount of Hacksilver and an art piece.

When Helheim Might Not Work For You
If you are below level fifteen, this area will be very difficult. The enemy scaling in Helheim assumes you have at least basic frost resistance gear and a few upgraded abilities. I tried pushing through before I was ready and died to the same Frost Wraith about eight times in a row. Going back to earlier regions and farming levels first made this section trivial afterward. Also, if you are playing on higher difficulties, the cold buildup is faster and the boss deals significantly more damage. Matter of Fact, on Val difficulty, King Helios can kill you in two hits during phase three if you do not have at least one defense upgrade equipped. Consider farming the earlier content a bit more if you plan to tackle the harder settings. The cold system in Helheim is well designed but it rewards learning your cooldowns rather than button mashing. Once you understand when to use fire attacks, how to manage your meter, and when to save Spartan Rage, it becomes a manageable challenge rather than a frustrating wall.
