Navigating Victory Road in Pokemon Emerald
Victory Road is that maze-like cave you pass through between Mossdeep City and the Pokemon League. It's mostly flat terrain with a lot of rockslides blocking your path, requiring you to use Rock Smash repeatedly. The map itself isn't particularly difficult once you know what you're looking for, but there are enough branches and dead ends that going in blind wastes time. The cave has three main floors. The first floor gets you into the mountain and introduces the puzzles. The second floor has more of the same but with level 30-40 wild Pokemon. The third floor is where you fight Roark from Diamond and Pearl if you're using certain ROM hacks, but in vanilla Emerald it's just the final stretch before you pop out near the entrance to the Safari Zone. Most people download a map and pin it to their monitor. That's fine. What actually matters is knowing where the key items are and in what order you need them. Here's the thing most maps don't make clear: you need both Rock Smash and Cut to get through, and they're not optional at any point. If you don't have a Pokemon that knows both, you're stuck. I remember once getting completely lost on the second floor because I assumed a visible path was passable. It wasn't. There's a wall of rocks in the central area that looks like you could just walk around it, but you can't. You have to backtrack two screens and take a different route that only becomes obvious after you've fought the first Team Magma grunt. If I hadn't wasted about twelve minutes on that, I wouldn't have had to look up a map at all.
On the third floor, the puzzle involves pushing boulders. Not the complicated kind, just simple ones where you push them into slots. The trick is that one boulder blocks your exit and another blocks a Pokemon. If you push them in the wrong order, you create a situation where you can't reach the one you need. The workaround is to push the one nearest the blocked Pokemon first, then deal with the exit blocker. I learned that the hard way after reloading twice. The key items you'll find here are the Strength Badge from the gym leader you haven't met yet (actually, you don't get a badge from Victory Road itself), a Hyper Potion, and a Max Revive. The real reward is just getting through. There's no legendary Pokemon hiding in there, no secret area, nothing that makes it worth revisiting after you've cleared it. If you're struggling, the shortest route is to head east from the entrance, take the first south path, then follow the main corridor east until you hit the boulder puzzle. From there it's mostly straight forward. The only place where people commonly go wrong is the second floor, where the path splits and one branch is a trap. Stick to the southern branch and you'll be fine.
Wild Pokemon in Victory Road are mostly Zubat, Geodude, Roggenrola, and occasionally a wild Shieldon in later generations if you're playing a modified ROM. Nothing threatening at your level, but they're plentiful enough that you should have a few full restores. I usually carry four or five. The cave is long enough that running out mid-way through is annoying. There's a TM you can grab on the second floor — it's TM28, Dig. Use it if you want, but it's not necessary for clearing the cave. I keep it because Dig is useful later, but if you're already near the Pokemon League, you probably won't use it again for a while. Some people suggest saving before entering because there are random encounters that can interrupt your progress if your Pokemon faints and you have no Pokeballs left. That's reasonable advice. Save at the entrance, then proceed. If you faint, you load and continue. Takes thirty seconds and saves twenty minutes of backtracking.
