Finding and Using Books in Tears of The Kingdom

The books and notes in TOTK are a bit of a mixed bag. Some are genuinely useful, most are flavor text you'll read once and forget. I've spent more time than I care to admit going through every single one of them across multiple playthroughs, and here's what actually matters when you're trying to figure out where everything is and whether it's worth your time. There are roughly 100 readable items scattered across Hyrule and the Sky Islands. They break down into a few categories: Zonai device manuals, Sealed Deck lore pages, NPC journal entries, and a handful of hidden guides tucked into puzzle rooms. The Zonai Device Instruction Manual is probably the single most useful thing you'll find. It shows up early at the Lookout Landing shrine and explains how Ultrahand, Fuse, and Construct abilities work. Read it before you start building because most players figure it out through trial and error and waste hours on mechanics the book explains in about two pages. The Sealed Pages are another story. They tell the backstory of the Upheaval and Link's sealing, but they're not required for anything gameplay-wise. I used to make a point of collecting all twelve, then realized they're mostly spread across locations I'd already be visiting for main quest progression. The ones that actually require detours are page seven near the Tarrey Town area and page ten in a cave south of Lake Florus. If you're doing a completionist run, grab them. If you just want to understand the plot, read whichever ones drop naturally along the way.

One thing the game doesn't make clear is that reading books doesn't unlock achievements or compendium entries by itself. The Komala Journal tracks your reads separately from the main compendium, and finishing all entries there gives you the " Scholar of Hyrule " challenge reward, which is just a badge. It won't change your build or your combat. I finished all the reads on my third playthrough and the only tangible benefit was the trophy pop and some story context I already knew from the first run. Here's the edge case nobody mentions: certain books only appear after specific story beats trigger them into existence. I spent about forty minutes looking for a Zonai schematic near the Great Sky Island that wasn't there because I hadn't completed the "Champion's Ballad" side quest yet. Once I finished it, the book spawned in a chest I'd already opened three times. If a book you know should exist isn't in its usual spot, check your quest log for anything unfinished in that region. The in-game Compendium will show you which books you've missed, but it doesn't tell you where they are. You'll need a map overlay or a second source for location data. My workaround was keeping a simple spreadsheet open on my phone while I played, marking each read as I found it and circling back to the blue question marks on the map for uncollected entries.

Don't bother with speedrunning book collection. The fastest route I found takes about twenty-five minutes if you know exactly where each one is, but the travel time between Sky Islands alone eats up most of that. It's faster to just read them as you encounter them during normal exploration. The books that are actually in hard-to-reach places are the ones worth planning for, and those are usually the Zonai device manuals near puzzle rooms rather than the lore pages. One more thing that trips people up: the reading UI pauses the game but doesn't save automatically. I lost about six minutes of progress once because I started reading a book right before a boss arena and the game didn't register a checkpoint until I closed the menu. Save manually before opening anything if you're near a tough encounter.
