community colleges with study abroad programs: International Education at Community Colleges Rosalind Latiner Raby, Edward J. Valeau, 2016-07-26 This book brings together distinguished scholars, community college practitioners, and emerging leaders to expand upon existing theories, provide reflection on practice, and demonstrate the dynamic nature of community college internationalization. There is a special challenge for United States community colleges to move from selected international programs that impact a few students to sustainable change that influences the entire college community. A key importance is realization that reform is not based on chance, but on intentional designs that are intended to guide future endeavors. The research, case studies, and experiences of the authors in this book are both inspiring and critical in the quest to encourage an academic shift for long-term change that promotes international literacy as an integral component of the community college and celebrates the needs of the changing local communities. |
community colleges with study abroad programs: Promoting Inclusion in Education Abroad Nick J. Gozik, Heather Barclay Hamir, 2023-07-03 Co-published with While education abroad – including studying, volunteering, researching, and interning abroad – is increasingly emphasized as a critical factor in preparing undergraduates for a globally interconnected world, diversifying the pool of participants in such activities has proven challenging. Framed within the concept of “inclusive excellence” with the objective of promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity in higher education as foundational to educational excellence, the contributors present research and practices that have been proven successful in improving participation among groups of students traditionally underrepresented in education abroad.Broader participation in education abroad programming has been a perennial concern at numerous higher education institutions in the U.S., having prompted countless discussions in professional organizations and across campuses among faculty, staff, and students. Many have come to recognize that overseas opportunities are no longer a luxury and instead are a necessity for job seekers entering a more diverse, globally interconnected workplace. The volume offers a combination of research-based chapters and case studies from leading experts on the barriers that disproportionately impact specific groups of students, including: students with disabilities; first-generation college students; undocumented students; racial and ethnic minorities; science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors; and males. The authors illuminate the issues which may inhibit education abroad participation, from individual to institutional, and present strategies reflecting a broad range of institutional contexts, resources, and needs. While there has been significant discussion and action to promote broader inclusion in education abroad, this is the first volume focusing on research and practice to achieve these ends, and is intended as a critical resource for practitioners and scholars alike. |
community colleges with study abroad programs: The Handbook of Practice and Research in Study Abroad Ross Lewin, 2010-11-24 Co-published with the Association for American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) If we are all becoming global citizens, what then are our civic responsibilities? Colleges and universities across the United States have responded to this question by making the development of global citizens part of their core mission. A key strategy for realizing this goal is study abroad. After all, there may be no better way for students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to become effective change-agents in international contexts. The Handbook of Practice and Research in Study Abroad is a comprehensive survey of the field. Each chapter eloquently conveys an enthusiasm for study abroad alongside a critical assessment of the most up-to-date research, theory and practice. This contributed volume brings together expert academics, senior administrators, practitioners of study abroad, and policy makers from across the United States, Canada and other part of the world, who meticulously address the following questions: What do we mean by global citizenship and global competence? What are the philosophical, pedagogical and practical challenges facing institutions as they endeavor to create global citizens? How is study abroad and global citizenship compatible with the role of the academy? What are the institutional challenges to study abroad, including those related to ethics, infrastructure, finances, accessibility, and quality control? Which study abroad programs can be called successful? The Handbook of Practice and Research in Study Abroad is an indispensable reference volume for scholars, higher education faculty, study abroad professionals, policy makers, and the academic libraries that serve these audiences. It is also appropriate for a wide range of courses in Higher Education Master’s and Ph.D. Programs. |

community colleges with study abroad programs: Education Abroad and the Undergraduate Experience Elizabeth Brewer, Anthony C. Ogden, 2023-07-03 Co-published with This volume focuses on two questions. First, how can education abroad be embedded into undergraduate education so that students experience it as an integral component of their education and something they help shape, rather than as time away from their education and as a commodity to be consumed? Second, how can colleges and universities maximize the educational value of education abroad by forging stronger connections between it and other undergraduate experiences? The volume argues that learning abroad be positioned within the work of the larger institution and students’ overall education.Organized within three sections, this volume makes the case that learning abroad must be positioned within the work of the larger institution and students’ overall education. In doing so, it questions many current assumptions and stimulates thinking about the power of an integrative approach to education abroad to lead to lasting educative value. An integrative approach requires that students be afforded multiple opportunities and ongoing support to draw connections with their learning abroad with other dimensions of their undergraduate education.Chapters cover topics such as the additive value of integrating multiple HIPs with education abroad to span disciplinary boundaries and promote an array of soft or operational skills; the importance of maintaining the disruptive quality of the encounter with the foreign to enrich study at home; issues of commodification and reciprocity; increasing access to study abroad to community college--particularly adult--populations; facilitating students’ social and intellectual development, identity formation, and reflective practice; rethinking orientation programming to emphasize the continuity of learning pre-, during- and post-education abroad; asking fundamental questions about the purpose of education abroad to rethink assessment and its purposes; the faculty role in the internationalization of the curriculum; and developing more intentional relationships with in-field partners and international educational organizations to more effectively connect leaning abroad with other dimensions of undergraduate education. For everyone involved in international education – whether SIOs, faculty, department chairs or deans – the critical questions and new perspectives offered here will inform and shape the growing movement to integrate education abroad with the overall undergraduate experience. |
community colleges with study abroad programs: Critical Perspectives on Equity and Social Mobility in Study Abroad Chris Glass, Peggy Gesing, 2021-07-22 This edited volume brings together the perspectives of a diverse group of international scholars to explore the intersections of study abroad and social mobility. In doing so, it challenges universalist assumptions and power imbalances implicit in study abroad across the Global North and South, and explores the implications of COVID-19 for equity within study abroad programs, policy, and practice going forward. Offering empirical, theoretical, and conceptual contributions, Critical Perspectives on Equity and Social Mobility in Study Abroad foregrounds critical reflection on the stratification of access to study abroad and examines the varied outcomes of international study in relation to graduates’ entry into domestic and international labor markets. Focusing on the experiences and outcomes of students from varied backgrounds, chapters identify a number of power imbalances relating to student race, ethnicity, religion, local and international policies and politics, and put forward valuable recommendations to ensure greater equity within the field. Against the backdrop of growing criticism over the power imbalances in international exchange, this text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in higher education, international and comparative education, and multicultural education. Those interested in educational policy and the sociology of education more broadly will also benefit from this book. |

community colleges with study abroad programs: Research Anthology on Instilling Social Justice in the Classroom Management Association, Information Resources, 2020-11-27 The issue of social justice has been brought to the forefront of society within recent years, and educational institutions have become an integral part of this critical conversation. Classroom settings are expected to take part in the promotion of inclusive practices and the development of culturally proficient environments that provide equal and effective education for all students regardless of race, gender, socio-economic status, and disability, as well as from all walks of life. The scope of these practices finds itself rooted in curriculum, teacher preparation, teaching practices, and pedagogy in all educational environments. Diversity within school administrations, teachers, and students has led to the need for socially just practices to become the norm for the progression and advancement of education worldwide. In a modern society that is fighting for the equal treatment of all individuals, the classroom must be a topic of discussion as it stands as a root of the problem and can be a major step in the right direction moving forward. Research Anthology on Instilling Social Justice in the Classroom is a comprehensive reference source that provides an overview of social justice and its role in education ranging from concepts and theories for inclusivity, tools, and technologies for teaching diverse students, and the implications of having culturally competent and diverse classrooms. The chapters dive deeper into the curriculum choices, teaching theories, and student experience as teachers strive to instill social justice learning methods within their classrooms. These topics span a wide range of subjects from STEM to language arts, and within all types of climates: PK-12, higher education, online or in-person instruction, and classrooms across the globe. This book is ideal for in-service and preservice teachers, administrators, social justice researchers, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in how social justice is currently being implemented in all aspects of education. |

community colleges with study abroad programs: Research Anthology on Service Learning and Community Engagement Teaching Practices Management Association, Information Resources, 2021-12-30 The need for more empathetic and community-focused students must begin with educators, as service-learning has begun to grow in popularity throughout the years. By implementing service and community aspects into the classroom at an early age, educators have a greater chance of influencing students and creating a new generation of service-minded individuals who care about their communities. Teachers must have the necessary skills and current information available to them to provide students with quality service learning and community engagement curricula. The Research Anthology on Service Learning and Community Engagement Teaching Practices provides a thorough investigation of the current trends, best practices, and challenges of teaching practices for service learning and community engagement. Using innovative research, it outlines the struggles, frameworks, and recommendations necessary for educators to engage students and provide them with a comprehensive education in service learning. Covering topics such as lesson planning, teacher education, and cultural humility, it is a crucial reference for educators, administrators, universities, lesson planners, researchers, academicians, and students. |

community colleges with study abroad programs: Handbook of Research on Study Abroad Programs and Outbound Mobility Velliaris, Donna M., Coleman-George, Deb, 2016-08-24 Millions of students seek short- and long-term study abroad options every year, and this trend is a key illustration of the internationalization of higher education. Because a global perspective has become mandatory in the largely globalized workforce, many institutions look to study abroad programs to prepare their students. This outbound mobility has the potential to contribute to greater understanding between cultures, countries, and individuals. The Handbook of Research on Study Abroad Programs and Outbound Mobility offers a comprehensive look into motivations for and opportunities through all forms of outbound mobility programs. By providing empirically-based research, this publication establishes the benefits, difficulties, and rewards of building a framework to support international students and programs. It is an invaluable resource for academics, students, policy makers, course developers, counselors, and cross-cultural student advisors. |

community colleges with study abroad programs: Look Before Leaping Gregory F. Malveaux, 2016 Look before Leaping merges court trends and cases, experts' first-hand accounts and recommendations of best practices, currently used risk-averting documents, and essential texts to bring a comprehensive study of the most common risks, liabilities, and needed repair for study abroad in higher education. As the title implies, too often students and program leaders jump into study abroad without adequately knowing the risks involved; the results can be tragic, even deadly. Unfortunately, ill-trained, negligent program leaders contribute to the mayhem, and legal ramifications frequently follow. At present, study abroad is experiencing its greatest growth ever. With this phenomenon more mishaps and lawsuits are occurring, demanding an increasing duty of care to manage programs. This book is produced for experts who design and lead study abroad, and for participants who desire the safest, most educational experiences overseas. Each has a duty to be scrupulous, or to look before leaping into study abroad. This book is designed to armor both for possible overseas risks, and give them preparedness to work through potential threats that may be faced. |
community colleges with study abroad programs: Study Abroad in a New Global Century Susan B. Twombly, Mark H. Salisbury, Shannon D. Tumanut, Paul Klute, 2012-10-25 Studying abroad has become a key educational means for preparing graduates with the intercultural competencies needed to succeed in our global economy. The federal government, business community, and higher education sector are united in their belief that study abroad is critical to such success. This monograph seeks to address two fundamental questions: Who studies abroad (or who does not) and why? What are the outcomes of study abroad? Increasing and broadening study abroad participation have proven particularly challenging, and the authors look to the research for how it might be improved. Although research suggests positive outcomes of study abroad, existing studies leave educators with some challenging questions. Based on their review, the authors pose recommendations for ways in which study abroad in the twenty-first century can renew its purposes and fulfill its promise. |
community colleges with study abroad programs: The Future of Foreign Language Education at Community Colleges Diane U. Eisenberg, 1992 In February 1992, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), in Washington, D.C., convened a 2-day roundtable meeting of education leaders with expertise in foreign language education and community college teaching and administration in order to formulate a foreign language education policy statement for AACC. This report presents the results of the roundtable. Following a preface by David R. Pierce, and a foreword by James Herbert, the AACC Foreign Language Education Policy Statement is offered, underscoring the critical responsibility that community colleges have in meeting the nation's new need for citizens who can function in a multi-linguistic world. The statement also details recommendations to community college leaders related to making foreign language education a priority; and strengthening related programs, faculty development efforts, and articulation agreements. Next, the following roundtable background papers are presented: (1) Foreign Language Education at Community Colleges by David A. Berry; (2) Making the Most of the Articulation Process, by Fe Pittman Brittain; (3) Uses of Technology To Teach Foreign Languages at Community Colleges, by John Underwood; (4) Foreign Language Instruction Across the Curriculum: A Strategy and Model, by Joyce S. community colleges with study abroad programs: United States Code , 2013 Preface 2012 edition: The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First session, enacted between January 3, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited U.S.C. 2012 ed. As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 USC 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office. -- John. A. Boehner, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., January 15, 2013--Page VII. |
community colleges with study abroad programs: International Service Learning Robert G. Bringle, Julie A. Hatcher, Steven G. Jones, 2023-07-03 International Service Learning (ISL) borrows from the domains of service learning, study abroad, and international education to create a new pedagogy that adds new and unique value from this combination. It is a high-impact pedagogy with the potential to improve students’ academic attainment, contribute to their personal growth, and develop global civic outcomes. The international service experience provides opportunities for additional learning goals, activities, and relationships that are not available in a domestic service learning course or in a traditional study abroad course. The service experience develops reflection while shedding light on and providing an added dimension to the curricular component of the study abroad course. The international education component further broadens students’ perspectives by providing opportunities to compare and contrast North American and international perspectives on course content. This book focuses on conducting research on ISL, which includes developing and evaluating hypotheses about ISL outcomes and measuring its impact on students, faculty, and communities. The book argues that rigorous research is essential to improving the quality of ISL’s implementation and delivery, and providing the evidence that will lead to wider support and adoption by the academy, funders, and partners. It is intended for both practitioners and scholars, providing guidance and commentary on good practice. The volume provides a pioneering analysis of and understanding of why and under what conditions ISL is an effective pedagogy.Individual chapters discuss conceptual frameworks, research design issues, and measurement strategies related to student learning outcomes; the importance of ISL course and program design; the need for faculty development activities to familiarize faculty with the component pedagogical strategies; the need for resources and collaboration across campus units to develop institutional capacity for ISL; and the role that community constituencies should assume as co-creators of the curriculum, co-educators in the delivery of the curriculum, and co-investigators in the evaluation of and study of ISL. The contributors demonstrate sensitivity to ethical implications of ISL, to issues of power and privilege, to the integrity of partnerships, to reflection, reciprocity, and community benefits |
community colleges with study abroad programs: From Study Abroad to Education Abroad Senta Goertler, Theresa Schenker, 2021-02-28 Comprehensive and evidence-based, this book presents the best practices for designing and sustaining study abroad programs to maximize the outcomes and benefits of education abroad for all students. Distilling the history, research, and variations of study abroad programs, Goertler and Schenker provide a clear-eyed analysis of the lessons learned and the common obstacles associated with education abroad. Organized in three parts – the state of education abroad in the US; research on education abroad outcomes; and best practices – Goertler and Schenker demonstrate the benefits of long-term study abroad for the development of advanced language skills and intercultural competence, and the need for diversity in participation. Chapters offer theory-based, practice-proven recommendations to invigorate, innovate, and implement successful study abroad programs that are sustainable and ethically engage with the local community. The authors discuss design features to maximize language proficiency and intercultural competence. Grounded in up-to-date research and theory, the book responds to the challenges associated with long-term education abroad programs and provides recommendations on (re)invigorating long-term programs and diversifying participation in education abroad. From Study Abroad to Education Abroad is vital reading for academics, researchers, and students in the fields of language education and education policy, as well as practitioners, such as language program coordinators and education abroad administrators. |

community colleges with study abroad programs: Mapping Internationalization on U.S. Campuses Laura M. Siaya, Fred M. Hayward, 2003 In 2000, ACE (American Council on Education) conducted a series of surveys, funded by the Ford Foundation, to examine the status of internationalisation in U.S. postsecondary education. After surveying more than 750 colleges and universities, along with undergraduate faculty and students, ACE has produced this examination of institutional efforts, as well as the international experiences and attitudes of students and faculty. Comparing the recent surveys? results to those of earlier studies, the authors reveal institutional strengths and weaknesses, with detailed findings according to institutional type. They also make recommendations for broadening exposure to international learning, bridging the disconnect between attitudes and actions, and creating conditions that will increase the level of international learning on campus. |
