communications in computational physics: Computational Solid State Physics F. Herman, 2013-03-08 During the past 20 years, solid state physics has become one of the major branches of physics. 1-2 Today over one-third of all scientific articles published in physics deal with solid state 3 topics. During the last two decades, there has also been ra~id growth of scientific computation in a wide variety of fields. -5 The combination of solid state physics and comp~tation may be termed computational solid state physics. This emerging field is distin guished from theoretical solid state physics only to the extent that electronic computers rather than slide rules or backs of envelopes are used to solve numerical or logical problems, test scientific hypotheses, and discover the essential physical content of formal mathematical theories. Papers in computational solid state physics are widely scatter ed in the literature. They can be found in the traditional physics journals and review series, such as The Physical Review and Solid State Physics; in more specialized publications, such as Journal of Computational Physics, Computer Physics Communications, and Methods in Computational Physics; and in the proceedings of a number of re 6 9 cent conferences and seminar courses. - Plans for holding an International Symposium on Computational Solid State Physics in early October 1971 were formulated by Dr. |

communications in computational physics: Mathematical Optics Vasudevan Lakshminarayanan, María L. Calvo, Tatiana Alieva, 2012-12-14 Going beyond standard introductory texts, Mathematical Optics: Classical, Quantum, and Computational Methods brings together many new mathematical techniques from optical science and engineering research. Profusely illustrated, the book makes the material accessible to students and newcomers to the field. Divided into six parts, the text presents state-of-the-art mathematical methods and applications in classical optics, quantum optics, and image processing. Part I describes the use of phase space concepts to characterize optical beams and the application of dynamic programming in optical waveguides. Part II explores solutions to paraxial, linear, and nonlinear wave equations. Part III discusses cutting-edge areas in transformation optics (such as invisibility cloaks) and computational plasmonics. Part IV uses Lorentz groups, dihedral group symmetry, Lie algebras, and Liouville space to analyze problems in polarization, ray optics, visual optics, and quantum optics. Part V examines the role of coherence functions in modern laser physics and explains how to apply quantum memory channel models in quantum computers. Part VI introduces super-resolution imaging and differential geometric methods in image processing. communications in computational physics: Open Problems in Communication and Computation Thomas M. Cover, B. Gopinath, 2012-12-06 Thomas M. Cover and B. Gopinatb The papers in this volume are the contributions to a special workshop on problems in communication and computation conducted in the summers of 1984 and 1985 in Morristown, New Jersey, and the summer of 1986 in Palo Alto. California. The structure of this workshop was unique: no recent results. no surveys. Instead. we asked for outstanding open prob~ lems in the field. There are many famous open problems, including the question P = NP?, the simplex conjecture in communication theory, the capacity region of the broadcast channel. and the two·helper problem in information theory. Beyond these well-defined problems are certain grand research goals. What is the general theory of information flow in stochastic networks? What is a comprehensive theory of computational complexity? What about a unification of algorithmic complexity and computational complex ity? Is there a notion of energy-free computation? And if so, where do information theory, communication theory, computer science, and physics meet at the atomic level? Is there a duality between computation and communication? Finally. what is the ultimate impact of algorithmic com plexity on probability theory? And what is its relationship to information theory? The idea was to present problems on the first day. try to solve them on the second day, and present the solutions on the third day. In actual fact, only one problem was solved during the meeting -- El Gamal's prob· lem on noisy communication over a common line. |

communications in computational physics: Numerical Methods in Turbulence Simulation Robert Moser, 2022-11-30 Numerical Methods in Turbulence Simulation provides detailed specifications of the numerical methods needed to solve important problems in turbulence simulation. Numerical simulation of turbulent fluid flows is challenging because of the range of space and time scales that must be represented. This book provides explanations of the numerical error and stability characteristics of numerical techniques, along with treatments of the additional numerical challenges that arise in large eddy simulations. Chapters are written as tutorials by experts in the field, covering specific both contexts and applications. Three classes of turbulent flow are addressed, including incompressible, compressible and reactive, with a wide range of the best numerical practices covered. A thorough introduction to the numerical methods is provided for those without a background in turbulence, as is everything needed for a thorough understanding of the fundamental equations. The small scales that must be resolved are generally not localized around some distinct small-scale feature, but instead are distributed throughout a volume. These characteristics put particular strain on the numerical methods used to simulate turbulent flows. - Includes a detailed review of the numerical approximation issues that impact the simulation of turbulence - Provides a range of examples of large eddy simulation techniques - Discusses the challenges posed by boundary conditions in turbulence simulation and provides approaches to addressing them |

communications in computational physics: From Newton to Mandelbrot Dietrich Stauffer, H. Eugene Stanley, 2013-11-11 From Newton to Mandelbrot takes the student on a tour of the most important landmarks of theoretical physics: classical, quantum, and statistical mechanics, relativity, electrodynamics, and, the most modern and exciting of all, the physics of fractals. The treatment is confined to the essentials of each area, and short computer programs, numerous problems, and beautiful color illustrations round off this unusual textbook. Ideally suited for a one-year course in theoretical physics it will also prove useful in preparing and revising for exams. This edition is corrected and includes a new appendix on elementary particle physics, answers to all short questions, and a diskette where a selection of executable programs exploring the fractal concept can be found. |

communications in computational physics: High-Order Methods for Computational Physics Timothy J. Barth, Herman Deconinck, 2013-03-09 The development of high-order accurate numerical discretization techniques for irregular domains and meshes is often cited as one of the remaining chal lenges facing the field of computational fluid dynamics. In structural me chanics, the advantages of high-order finite element approximation are widely recognized. This is especially true when high-order element approximation is combined with element refinement (h-p refinement). In computational fluid dynamics, high-order discretization methods are infrequently used in the com putation of compressible fluid flow. The hyperbolic nature of the governing equations and the presence of solution discontinuities makes high-order ac curacy difficult to achieve. Consequently, second-order accurate methods are still predominately used in industrial applications even though evidence sug gests that high-order methods may offer a way to significantly improve the resolution and accuracy for these calculations. To address this important topic, a special course was jointly organized by the Applied Vehicle Technology Panel of NATO's Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, and the Numerical Aerospace Simulation Division at the NASA Ames Research Cen ter. The NATO RTO sponsored course entitled Higher Order Discretization Methods in Computational Fluid Dynamics was held September 14-18,1998 at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics in Belgium and September 21-25,1998 at the NASA Ames Research Center in the United States. |
