He was born on St. Kitts, but grew up in the sister island of Nevis. He later served in the Canadian military, during World War 11. Upon his return to St. Kitts-Nevis in the late 1940s, Stevens soon found himself in the center of a developing political confl ict between the two islands. In time, he settled on Nevis and took that island's side. Eventually, Stevens became embroiled in a political love-hate relationships with two Nevisians, Eugene Walwyn and Simeon Daniel. Each of the three men was destined to leave his mark on the island's politics and history. Walwyn was soon labeled a traitor to Nevis. Later, despite the fact that Stevens and Daniel worked together in the same political party for many years, the two men came to mistrust the vision and intent of each other's politics. The Caribbean does have a long history of authoritarian and forever leadership. However, Stevens was careful to focus on empowering younger Nevisians to become future leaders and politicians. Popularising texts on economics and business-related matters has hitherto been a neglected and under-explored area of enquiry, and yet it deserves attention and study on account of the new fascinating insights it offers into specialised language and discourse. The present book explores this under-researched area via the qualitative analysis of a modern genre, namely newspapers on the web. In particular, it scrutinises authentic extracts principally drawn from The Guardian Online in order to show, on the one hand, the popularising effect of the Internet on business and economic discourse, and, on the other hand, the realistic vocabulary currently used in economic and professional jargon. The introductory chapter discusses the popularisation of specialised text at large and of new media discourse in particular. It describes this phenomenon as a ‘reformulation process’ whereby specialised knowledge is transformed into everyday or lay knowledge, and also as a ‘recontextualisation process’ whereby popularisation discourse is adapted to the appropriateness conditions of the new genres and to the constraints of the media employed. Popularisation, it is claimed, implies relevant changes not only in terms of terminological simplifications and adaptations to the public’s prior knowledge, but also in terms of the roles undertaken by the participants in the communicative event. The remaining chapters are organised into thematic units whose topics range from global economy, economic growth, and financial crisis to business management, employment, and sales. Its purpose was to take an online English course for non-traditional business majors and create a theme that would be relevant to the business world. Being given the task to create this course from the ground up was exciting and intriguing. There turned out to be a lot more material that could be used for this theme than previously thought. To gauge the temperature of the topic, a panel was set up with the theme of businessmen (or women) and their changing image through literature. At the 2009 NeMLA (Northeast Modern Language Association) conference in Boston, the panel was held and many ideas, such as some of the ones presented in this book, were discussed. A secondary theme evolved out of the construction of the first. Participants discussed the environment as a catalyst in the change of “what a person actually thinks a businessman (or woman) looks like.” Many of these images were formed based upon pop culture, such as the traveling salesman in the Looney Tunes cartoons who sells brushes door to door and hails from Walla Walla, Washington. Others were based on the images read about in books, such as Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman. The essays included in this volume, presented by doctoral candidates and scholars from across a range of geographical regions and disciplines, result in a collection that investigates the idea of the changing image of the businessman throughout literature both in America and in Europe. Pioneering in the American free-enterprise system, he embarked on a journey leading to a multimillion-dollar industry. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to domestic parents and a paternal grandmother, who instilled Christian values and taught him the Bible. A few months after his birth, Parks Sr. relocated his family to Dayton, Ohio, the first state across the Mason-Dixon Line, seeking better job opportunities. During the depression and two more children, times were hard, and Parks Senior's wife joined him in the workforce. Together, they were able to hold the family together. Henry and his sisters attended segregated primary schools and integrated high schools. Henry read profusely and studied hard, graduating from Roosevelt High School with honors but to the resentment of his dad. The family had no idea Henry Jr. had plans to attend college. He worked a year at several jobs, one at the same hotel where his father worked as a bartender, washing dishes and taking out the trash. He saved his money and entered Ohio State University College of Commerce, never knowing at matriculation that the money he worked so hard to earn and was sending home for his parents to save for him was being spent to support the family household. Without money to pay tuition, he pursued scholarships and more work. He matriculated in 1935. After many endeavors in business, a numbers runner in Baltimore forwards the capital and also becomes a silent partner. Henry Junior's idea for a pork sausage manufacturing plant became a reality in 1951. Henry opened the H. G. Parks Inc. trading as Parks Sausage. With strong, aggressive leadership, brilliant marketing and advertising, Henry Jr. built a business that never had a losing year. Henry's success caught the attention of some of the leading corporate boards in this country along with national organizations and city, state, and federal leaders. He collaborated closely with luminaries such as Benjamin Britten and John Piper and encouraged the young Kenneth MacMillan. Tirelessly innovative, he devised a hit musical revue, Cranks as well as perennial favourites such as Pineapple Poll. His charm and wit endeared him to colleagues and royalty alike, but in the late 1950s his star began to wane. This, and a much-publicised scandal, drove Cranko to leave England for Germany. There, his work as director and choreographer of the Stuttgart Ballet enjoyed phenomenal success in USA, Russia and Europe.
