cal state computer science: Stuck in the Shallow End, updated edition Jane Margolis, 2017-03-03 Why so few African American and Latino/a students study computer science: updated edition of a book that reveals the dynamics of inequality in American schools. The number of African Americans and Latino/as receiving undergraduate and advanced degrees in computer science is disproportionately low. And relatively few African American and Latino/a high school students receive the kind of institutional encouragement, educational opportunities, and preparation needed for them to choose computer science as a field of study and profession. In Stuck in the Shallow End, Jane Margolis and coauthors look at the daily experiences of students and teachers in three Los Angeles public high schools: an overcrowded urban high school, a math and science magnet school, and a well-funded school in an affluent neighborhood. They find an insidious “virtual segregation” that maintains inequality. The race gap in computer science, Margolis discovers, is one example of the way students of color are denied a wide range of occupational and educational futures. Stuck in the Shallow End is a story of how inequality is reproduced in America—and how students and teachers, given the necessary tools, can change the system. Since the 2008 publication of Stuck in the Shallow End, the book has found an eager audience among teachers, school administrators, and academics. This updated edition offers a new preface detailing the progress in making computer science accessible to all, a new postscript, and discussion questions (coauthored by Jane Margolis and Joanna Goode).

cal state computer science: Higher Education and Silicon Valley W. Richard Scott, Michael W. Kirst, 2017-09 Universities and colleges often operate between two worlds: higher education and economic systems. It is impossible to understand how current developments are affecting colleges without attending to the changes in both the higher education system and in the economic communities in which they exist. W. Richard Scott, Michael W. Kirst, and colleagues focus on the changing relations between colleges and companies in one vibrant economic region: the San Francisco Bay Area. Colleges and tech companies, they argue, have a common interest in knowledge generation and human capital, but they operate in social worlds that substantially differ, making them uneasy partners. Colleges are a part of a long tradition that stresses the importance of precedent, academic values, and liberal education. High-tech companies, by contrast, value innovation and know-how, and they operate under conditions that reward rapid response to changing opportunities. The economy is changing faster than the postsecondary education system. -- From the cover.
cal state computer science: Machine Learning for Healthcare Applications Sachi Nandan Mohanty, G. Nalinipriya, Om Prakash Jena, Achyuth Sarkar, 2021-04-13 When considering the idea of using machine learning in healthcare, it is a Herculean task to present the entire gamut of information in the field of intelligent systems. It is, therefore the objective of this book to keep the presentation narrow and intensive. This approach is distinct from others in that it presents detailed computer simulations for all models presented with explanations of the program code. It includes unique and distinctive chapters on disease diagnosis, telemedicine, medical imaging, smart health monitoring, social media healthcare, and machine learning for COVID-19. These chapters help develop a clear understanding of the working of an algorithm while strengthening logical thinking. In this environment, answering a single question may require accessing several data sources and calling on sophisticated analysis tools. While data integration is a dynamic research area in the database community, the specific needs of research have led to the development of numerous middleware systems that provide seamless data access in a result-driven environment. Since this book is intended to be useful to a wide audience, students, researchers and scientists from both academia and industry may all benefit from this material. It contains a comprehensive description of issues for healthcare data management and an overview of existing systems, making it appropriate for introductory and instructional purposes. Prerequisites are minimal; the readers are expected to have basic knowledge of machine learning. This book is divided into 22 real-time innovative chapters which provide a variety of application examples in different domains. These chapters illustrate why traditional approaches often fail to meet customers’ needs. The presented approaches provide a comprehensive overview of current technology. Each of these chapters, which are written by the main inventors of the presented systems, specifies requirements and provides a description of both the chosen approach and its implementation. Because of the self-contained nature of these chapters, they may be read in any order. Each of the chapters use various technical terms which involve expertise in machine learning and computer science.

cal state computer science: Achieving Equity in Higher Education Using Empathy as a Guiding Principle Ward, Catherine, 2022-04-15 The assertion that empathy is an essential characteristic of equity work in higher education demands educators operate from a place of justice, fairness, and inclusive practice. Empathy is a personal quality that allows educators to consider another's perspective to inform the decision-making process about policy, procedures, program and service design, and teaching pedagogy. Thus, engaging empathy in everyday practice supports the potential to create more equitable and inclusive environments as well as standards for serving a diverse student population. Achieving Equity in Higher Education Using Empathy as a Guiding Principle explores what empathy is, how empathy can be developed, and how empathy can be applied in an educator’s practice to achieve equity-mindedness and mitigate inequitable student outcomes in and out of the classroom. The book also argues that self-examination and engaging empathy is a way to thoughtfully examine differences and uphold the values of humanity. Covering topics such as intercultural listening and program development, this reference work is ideal for administrators, practitioners, academicians, scholars, researchers, instructors, and students.

cal state computer science: A to Z of Women in Science and Math Lisa Yount, 2007 From ancient times to the present day, scientifically inclined women in many cultures have had to battle against the traditional belief that men are more cognitively adept than women. At times throughout history, women were persecuted for their attempts to break down traditional gender barriers. Today, women scientists and mathematicians must continue to defend the quality of their work and demand the respect they deserve in the mathematical and scientific communities.A to Z of Women in Science and Math, Revised Edition profiles 195 women who fought against these stereotypes throughout history and all over the world to forge new discoveries and theories that would eventually change the way we view science. This thoroughly revised book updates the story of each individual to the present day and features 38 new profiles. Among the profiles included are those of chemists, astronomers, geologists, environmental scientists, and a range of other professions and careers. In addition, new photographs have been added, and the bibliography has been updated. Subject indexes allow the reader to search by such professions as microbiology and paleontology.Additional subject indexes organize individuals by country of birth, country of major scientific activity, and year of birth.

Worth, 2022-02-20 This book includes case studies of comprehensive campaigns at eight varied institutions of higher education. In each case, a campaign was part of an institutional strategy for growth and change. Many of the campaigns marked a turning point in the institution’s history. They are not just stories about campaigns, they are examples of institutional strategies for growth and change. The case studies include widely varied institutions: a relatively young private university campaigning to enhance its research standing; a distinguished private university moving beyond near-destruction to pursue bold goals; a prestigious public university aiming to sustain momentum in its third century; a public university raising funds to enhance its own programs and bring economic rejuvenation to its region; a public university focused on the economic mobility of its diverse students and undertaking its first campaign; a unique liberal arts college turning to philanthropy to implement an innovative new financial model; a distinguished historically Black college for women seeking resources to continue and increase its excellence; and a community college raising funds to help address urgent economic and social priorities of the city and county that it serves. Their campaign goals ranged from $40 million to $5 billion!
cal state computer science: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences Wade H. Shafer, 2012-12-06 Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
