By analyzing the scant visual evidence in the context of East Asian visual art of the period, the author recreates the subject represented on the seventh century artifact and demonstrates that it was not Buddhist (as previously believed), but associated with the funerary iconography of China that arrived in Japan with immigrants from the Korean peninsula. In addition, by closely investigating the context for the compilation of each of the documents associated with the artifact, Pradel illuminates the history of the embroidery and its changing significance and perception over the centuries. |

Natow, 2015-05-15 One of the striking ways in which state governments have pursued better performance in public higher education is through the use of performance funding. Performance funding involves tying state support directly to institutional performance on specific outcomes such as rates of graduation and job placement. The principal rationale for performance funding has been that the introduction of market-like forces will prod institutions to become more efficient, delivering more bang for the buck. Kevin Dougherty, an expert on state performance funding, finds its development puzzling. First, despite the great interest in it, only half the states have ever adopted performance funding for higher education. Moreover, of the states that did adopt performance funding, over half later dropped it. Finally, in the states that have retained performance funding over a long period of time, their programs have undergone considerable changes in the amount of state funding they devote to performance funding and in the content of the indicators they use to allocate that funding. Plansky, 2015-01-08 Disc golf emerged as a lifestyle sport from the countercultural movement of the 60s & its popularity has grown while other postmodern recreation forms have faded or plateaued (Wheaton 2004). As an accessible malleable form of recreation its appeal can be explained by a genius loci elicited from direct engagement & a culture of play. What landscape & cultural characteristics of disc golf make it attractive? Participants in the LA region were given semi-structured interviews at 4 popular courses representing 4 distinct typologies to discover preferences. Demographic results and analysis of interviews revealed an overall reluctance to travel, but a desire for variety. Interviewees also expressed overall enthusiasm for courses developed on underutilized post-industrial sites. Camaraderie at each site was shown to be uniquely shaped by rule-creation through play forms (Callois1961); leveling the field for new players, or creating complexity/challenge for experienced players. Guidelines & recommendations are given. |
