The Views of Delegates, Organisations and Venues Janine Paul, 2007-07-26 Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, Bournemouth University, language: English, abstract: The focus of this dissertation is on the perceptions of conferences organisers, venue organisers and delegates of Bournemouth. These groups were investigated through primary research. Consumer decisions of choosing an appropriate venue are exploited. Bournemouth is used as a case study. The primary goal of conferences in Bournemouth is to contribute to large parts of the economy of the seaside destination. This can be strengthened through emphasising its facilities, reacting to demand of conference organisers and considering needs of delegates. With the help of this work Bournemouth can create a marketing plan adjusted to its conference sector. Furthermore, the findings can be applied by venues, to effectively align their product to the market and by conference organisers to create a successful conference for their attendees. In general venues are emphasising their physical factors, rather than soft issues and therefore meeting the demand of conference organisers. Those are aware of delegates’ needs, but nevertheless chose a venue with size and facilities as the major considerations. Bournemouth’s reputation is strongly influenced by its entertainment possibilities also portraying a negative image due to its ‘drinking culture.’ The infrastructure is well established and provides the basic requirements for delegates’ needs to come to the venues, experience the conference and return. The recommendation for the town’s marketing plan is a focus on delegate’s needs reachable through the common communication channels together with a niche market orientation. This gives it a competitive advantage to differentiate it from its rivals.

The volume concludes with two case studies related to implementing research data management services at two liberal arts colleges. They demonstrate that the integration of data management services for undergraduate and faculty research in liberal arts colleges is just as important as it is for the large research universities, and that new service models should be incorporated so that all librarians and library staff participate in this integration in their duties and responsibilities. It is hoped that this volume, and the series in general, will be a valuable and exciting addition to the discussions and planning surrounding the future directions, services, and careers in the twenty-first-century academic library.

The review conducted by the Office of Technology Assessment concludes that the movement toward electronic delivery of government services is accelerating, but that many factors must be considered. The greatest risks of electronic delivery are overlooking the human element and users' needs, which would further widen the gap between the technologically literate and the technologically illiterate, and failing to capitalize on all the opportunities that partnerships among government agencies and the private sector could provide. Changes that will be required in federal management are outlined, and options for successful implementation of electronic delivery are sketched. Many rely on the amplification of existing structures. Miller, 2017-08-01 Biopolitics and posthumanism have been passé theories in the academy for a while now, standing on the unfashionable side of the fault line between biology and liberal thought. These days, if people invoke them, they do so a bit apologetically. But, as Ruth Miller argues, we should not be so quick to relegate these terms to the scholarly dustbin. This is because they can help to explain an increasingly important (and contested) influence in modern democratic politics-that of nostalgia. Nostalgia is another somewhat embarrassing concept for the academy. It is that wistful sense of longing for an imaginary and unitary past that leads to an impossible future. And, moreover for this book, it is ordinarily considered bad for democracy. But, again, Miller says, not so fast. As she argues in this book, nostalgia is the mode of engagement with the world that allows thought and life to coexist, productively, within democratic politics. Miller demonstrates her theory by looking at nostalgia as a nonhuman mode of thought embedded in biopolitical reproduction. To put this another way, she looks at mass democracy as a classically nonhuman affair and nostalgic, nonhuman reproduction as the political activity that makes this democracy happen. To illustrate, Miller draws on the politics surrounding embryos and the modernization of the Turkish alphabet. Situating this argument in feminist theories of biopolitics, this unusual and erudite book demonstrates that nostalgia is not as detrimental to democratic engagement as scholars have claimed.
